Rice husk is produced in a massive amount worldwide as a byproduct of rice cultivation. Rice husk contains approximately 20 wt% of mesoporous SiO2. We produce mesoporous silicon (Si) by reducing the rice husk-originating SiO2 using a magnesio-milling process. Taking advantage of meso-porosity and large available quantity, we apply rice husk-originating Si to lithium ion battery anodes in a composite form with commercial graphite. By varying the mass ratio between these two components, trade-off relation between specific capacity and cycle life was observed...

Objective: To evaluate macro and micronutrients intake of adolescents living with HIV/AIDS in use of antiretroviral therapy and compare it to the Dietary Reference Intakes. Uniform porous silicon hollow nano-spheres are prepared without any sacrificial templates through a magnesio-thermic reduction of mesoporous silica hollow nanospheres and surface modified by the following in situ chemical polymerization of polypyrrole. The porous hollow structure and polypyrrole coating contribute significantly to the excellent structure stability and high electrochemical performance of the nanocomposite.

We report a novel synthesis of Ti5Si3 nanoparticles (NPs) via the magnesio-reduction of TiO2 NPs and SiO2 in eutectic LiCl-KCl molten salts at 700 °C. The Ti5Si3 particle size (∼25 nm) is confined to the nanoscale due to the partial dissolution of Mg and silica in the molten salts and a subsequent heterogeneous reduction on the surface of the TiO2 NPs.

Reaction of tosylhydrazones of O-substituted alpha-hydroxy or N-substituted alpha-amino aldehydes (2, 7, 11, 15, 17, and 20) with selected alpha-magnesio alkyl phenyl sulfones afforded the respective derivatives of allylic alcohols or allylic amines. 2,3-O-Isopropylidene-D-glyceraldehyde (1) was transformed into its tosylhydrazone (2) and then olefins 4a with retention of optical purity.

After revisiting earlier works reporting the regioselective synthesis of 1,5-disubstituted-1,2,3-triazoles via the addition of bromomagnesium acetylides to azides, much improved yields of the products were obtained for a wide array of azides and alkynes. Reactions of representative tosylhydrazones of aldehydes and ketones with alpha-metalated sulfones were examined in order to develop a practical olefination method. Treatment of aldehyde tosylhydrazone 2 with an excess of alpha-lithiated methyl phenyl or dimethyl sulfones yielded 3a.
