Earthworms improve the soil fertility and they are also sensitive to soil contaminants. Earthworms (Eisenia fetida), standard reference species, were usually chosen to culture and handle for toxicity tests. Metabolic responses in earthworms exposed to 2, 2', 4, 4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) and decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) were inhibitory and interfered with basal metabolism. In this study, 1 H-NMR based metabolomics was used to identify sensitive biomarkers and explore metabolic responses of earthworms under sub-lethal BDE-47 and BDE-209 concentrations for 14 days...

For the purpose of producing carbons with developed mesoporosity, a wood biochar was thermally treated at 600-800 °C in the air/nitrogen atmosphere. The mesopore development was observed when the air flux increased to 50-90 mL/min, and the carbon product having high mesopore surface area (316 m2 /g) and mesopore pore volume (0.284 cm3 /g) was produced at the treatment temperature of 700 °C. The mesopores were developed mainly in the temperature holding stage of thermal treatment, with size mainly ranged from 20 to 60 Å...

BACKGROUND: Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) downregulation has been found to be induced by wear particles in aseptic prosthesis loosening (APL). Osteoclastogenesis and osteoclast activation are the main pathological factors associated with APL. However, whether SIRT1 downregulation contributes to the formation and activation of osteoclasts through the induction of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is unclear. METHODS: To address this, an osteolysis mouse model was used in which animals were treated with the SIRT1 activator, resveratrol (RES), or an ER stress inhibitor, 4-PBA, for two weeks...

BACKGROUND: Cardiac fibrosis is a crucial factor of heart failure. It has been reported that several microRNAs (miRNAs, miRs) were involved in cardiac fibrosis, however, the role and possible regulatory mechanism of microRNA-135a (miR-135a) in cardiac fibrosis have not been investigated. Here, we explored the regulation mechanism of miR-135a on cardiac fibrosis. METHODS AND RESULTS: In vitro, cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) from neonatal rats were treated by isoproterenol (ISO) at the final concentration of 10 μM for 24 h and miR-135a expression was decreased obviously...

In the work, yolk-shell structured mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles (YSMONs) are successfully prepared by a mild alkalescent etching approach. The method is very convenient, in which mesostructured organosilica nanospheres are directly transformed into yolk-shell structures after etching with mild alkalescent solution (e.g. sodium carbonate solution). The prepared YSMONs have ethane-bridged frameworks, a monodisperse diameter (320 nm), a large pore volume (1.0 cm3  g-1 ), a uniform mesopore (2.4 nm) and a high surface area (1327 m2  g-1 )...

Stents are vital devices to treat vascular stenosis in pediatric patients with congenital heart disease. Bioresorbable stents (BRSs) have been applied to reduce challenging complications caused by permanent metal stents. However, it remains almost a total lack of BRSs with satisfactory compression performance specifically for children with congenital heart disease, leading to importantly suboptimal effects. In this work, composite bioresorbable prototype stents with superior compression resistance were designed by braiding and annealing technology, incorporating poly (p-dioxanone) (PPDO) monofilaments and polycaprolactone (PCL) multifilament...

Aberrated glucose metabolism is a key future of cancer cells. Unlike normal cells, tumor cells favor glycolysis even in the presence of sufficient oxygen. Pyruvate kinase (PK), a key glucose metabolic enzyme, converts phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) to pyruvate by transferring the high-energy phosphate group to adenosine diphosphate (ADP) to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2), one of the four isozyme of PK, which universally expressed in rapidly proliferating cells such as embryonic cells and cancer cells...

Low-angle grain boundaries generally exist in the form of dislocation arrays, while high-angle grain boundaries (misorientation angle >15°) exist in the form of structural units in bulk metals. Here, through in situ atomic resolution aberration corrected electron microscopy observations, we report size-dependent grain-boundary structures improving both stabilities of electrical conductivity and mechanical properties in sub-10-nm-sized gold crystals. With the diameter of a nanocrystal decreasing below 10 nm, the high-angle grain boundary in the crystal exists as an array of dislocations...

The vortex, a fundamental topological excitation featuring the in-plane winding of a vector field, is important in various areas such as fluid dynamics, liquid crystals, and superconductors. Although commonly existing in nature, vortices were observed exclusively in real space. Here, we experimentally observed momentum-space vortices as the winding of far-field polarization vectors in the first Brillouin zone of periodic plasmonic structures. Using homemade polarization-resolved momentum-space imaging spectroscopy, we mapped out the dispersion, lifetime, and polarization of all radiative states at the visible wavelengths...

A mixed ligated amidoyttrium complex, Y(NBn2 )(L1)(THF)2 (8, L1 = N,N'-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)ethylenediamine), served as a catalyst for addition of the ortho-pyridyl C(sp2 )-H bond of 2-substituted pyridines to non-activated imines; complex 8 showed superior catalytic performance compared with Y[N(SiMe3 )2 ]3 (1) and Y[N(SiMe3 )2 ]2 (NBn2 )(THF) (2). Concerning the reaction mechanism, we conducted a stoichiometric reaction of an alkylyttrium complex, Y(CH2 SiMe3 )(L1)(THF)2 (7), with 2-ethylpyridine (4e), giving a mixture of (η3 -pyridylmethyl)yttrium complex 9 and (η2 -pyridyl)yttrium complex 10 along with elimination of SiMe4 ...

The spin dynamics of the two-dimensional triangular-lattice antiferromagnet AgCrS2 is investigated by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The g-factor is found to show an unusual non-monotonously temperature dependent behavior, which, along with the super-Curie behavior observed in the ESR intensity data, provides clear evidences for the competition between FM and AFM fluctuations at temperatures well above TN. On approaching the Néel temperature TN from above, the linewidth is found to diverge. Such a divergent behavior could be well described by the Kawamura-Miyashita model due to Z2 type magnetic vortex-antivortex pairing, which is consistent with the expectation for a 2D Heisenberg magnetic system...

NSUN2 is a tRNA methyltransferase and plays an important role in cell development via modifying RNA methylation. We aimed to evaluate the expression of NSUN2 and its prognostic value in HNSCC. Random-effects model of meta-analysis shows 1.99-folds (95% CI: 1.89-2.09) upregulation of NSUN2 expression in HNSCC versus normal tissues. Patients with high NSUN2 levels had approximately 22 months shorter overall survival, and had a higher mortality risk than those with low one (p-trend = 0.020). In conclusion, NSUN2 is a potential independent prognostic marker and may be a potential therapeutic target in HNSCC...

Most glycoproteins and biological protein samples undergo both O- and N-glycosylation, making characterization of their structures very complicated and time-consuming. Nevertheless, to fully understand the biological functions of glycosylation, both the glycosylation forms need to be analyzed. Herein we report a versatile, convenient one-pot method in which O- and N-glycans are simultaneously released from glycoproteins and chromogenically labelled in situ and thus available for further characterization. In this procedure, glycoproteins are incubated with 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone (PMP) in aqueous ammonium hydroxide, making O-glycans released from protein backbones by beta-elimination and N-glycans liberated by alkaline hydrolysis...

Near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence is very important for high-contrast biological imaging of high-scattering tissues such as brain tissue. Unfortunately, commercial NIR dyes are excited usually by visible light, and their multi-photon absorption (MPA) cross-sections are small. Here, we design new co-encapsulated NIR nanoparticles (NPs) with a large three-photon (3PA) absorption cross-section. A form of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) luminogen (AIEgen), 2,3-bis(4'-(diphenylamino)-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl) fumaronitrile (TPATCN), is introduced as the donor, and a form of NIR dye, silicon 2,3-naphthalocyanine bis-(trihexylsilyloxide) (NIR775), is adopted as the acceptor...

Inducing magnetism in a topological insulator (TI) by exchange coupling with a ferromagnetic insulator (FMI) will break the time-reversal symmetry of topological surface states, offering possibilities to realize several predicted novel magneto-electric effects. Seeking suitable FMI materials is crucial for the coupling of heterojunctions, and yet is challenging as well and only a few kinds have been explored. In this report, we introduce epitaxial LaCoO3 thin films on a SrTiO3 substrate, which is an insulating ferromagnet with a Curie temperature of TC ∼ 85 K, to be combined with TIs for proximity coupling...

Two pairs of MOF-based hybrid enantiomorphs, [NH2(CH3)2]3[Pb2X3(BDC)2] (H2BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid, X = Br or I), have been synthesized using the solvothermal reaction and then manually separated, which are labeled as 1a/1b (X = Br) and 2a/2b (X = I). The isomorphic 1a and 2a crystallize in tetragonal space group P43212, and the isomorphic 1b and 2b in the enantiomorphic space group P41212. Twofold interpenetrated three-dimensional (3-D) networks were built from two sets of equivalent I1O2 type hybrid inorganic-organic frameworks in 1a/1b and 2a/2b...
