Menopause is associated with bone loss and enhanced visceral adiposity. A polyclonal antibody that targets the β-subunit of the pituitary hormone follicle-stimulating hormone (Fsh) increases bone mass in mice. Here, we report that this antibody sharply reduces adipose tissue in wild-type mice, phenocopying genetic haploinsufficiency for the Fsh receptor gene Fshr. The antibody also causes profound beiging, increases cellular mitochondrial density, activates brown adipose tissue and enhances thermogenesis. These actions result from the specific binding of the antibody to the β-subunit of Fsh to block its action...

The interactions between Ca(2+) ions and sphingomyelin play crucial roles in a wide range of cellular activities. However, little is known about the molecular details of the interactions at interfaces. In this work, we investigated the interactions between Ca(2+) ions and egg sphingomyelin (ESM) Langmuir monolayers at the air/water interface by subwavenumber high-resolution broadband sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (HR-BB-SFG-VS). We show that Ca(2+) ions can induce ordering of the acyl chains in the ESM monolayer...

We present OpenRBC, a coarse-grained molecular dynamics code, which is capable of performing an unprecedented in silico experiment-simulating an entire mammal red blood cell lipid bilayer and cytoskeleton as modeled by multiple millions of mesoscopic particles-using a single shared memory commodity workstation. To achieve this, we invented an adaptive spatial-searching algorithm to accelerate the computation of short-range pairwise interactions in an extremely sparse three-dimensional space. The algorithm is based on a Voronoi partitioning of the point cloud of coarse-grained particles, and is continuously updated over the course of the simulation...

N-myc downstream-regulated gene1 (NDRG1) has been identified as a potent tumor suppressor gene. The molecular mechanisms of anti-tumor activity of NDRG1 involve its suppressive effects on a variety of tumorigenic signaling pathways. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of NDRG1 in the apoptosis of colorectal cancer (CRC) cells. We first collected the clinical data of locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) patients receiving oxaliplatin-based neoadjuvant chemotherapy in our medical center. Correlation analysis revealed that NDRG1 positively associated with the downstaging rates and prognosis of patients...

Persistent luminescence nanoparticles (PLNPs) have been used for bioimaging without autofluorescence background interference, but the poor afterglow performance impedes their further applications in cancer therapy. To overcome the Achilles' heel of PLNPs, herein, we report the construction of injectable persistent luminescence implants (denoted as PL implants) as a built-in excitation source for efficient repeatable photodynamic therapy (PDT). The injectable ZGC (ZnGa1.996O4:Cr0.004) PL implants were prepared by dissolving ZGC PLNPs in poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA)/N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) oleosol, which demonstrated much stronger persistent luminescence (PersL) intensity and longer PersL lifetime than that of ZGC PLNPs both in vitro and in vivo...
