Background: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic macular edema (DME) are potentially blinding, microvascular retinal diseases in people with diabetes mellitus. Preclinical studies support a protective role of the hormone prolactin (PRL) due to its ocular incorporation and conversion to vasoinhibins, a family of PRL fragments that inhibit ischemia-induced retinal angiogenesis and diabetes-derived retinal vasopermeability. Here, we describe the protocol of an ongoing clinical trial investigating a new therapy for DR and DME based on elevating the circulating levels of PRL with the prokinetic, dopamine D2 receptor blocker, levosulpiride...

Objective: To conduct a data survey on the subject of medical claims involving civil liability in ophthalmology at the São Paulo Court of Appeals. Methods: A case law research was carried out on the São Paulo Court of Appeals website searching for the keyword "ophthalmologist" for all years until 2016. Results: Of the 65 cases found, 29 were selected. There has been an increase in the number of claims in ophthalmology, especially in surgical procedures on the anterior chamber of the eye...

PURPOSE: To compare ocular surface characteristics in eyes after femtosecond laser-assisted laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) or photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). SETTING: Centro de Oftalmologia Barraquer, Barcelona, Spain. DESIGN: Prospective comparative observational study. METHODS: Patients with myopia who had femtosecond laser-assisted LASIK or PRK were included. Tear osmolarity, the Ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaire, Schirmer I, corneal sensitivity, tear breakup time (TBUT), and corneal fluorescein staining were evaluated preoperatively and 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively...

OBJECTIVE: to create and validate an electronic database in ophthalmology focused on strabismus, to computerize this database in the form of a systematic data collection software named Electronic Protocol, and to incorporate this protocol into the Integrated System of Electronic Protocols (SINPE(c)). METHODS: this is a descriptive study, with the methodology divided into three phases: (1) development of a theoretical ophthalmologic database with emphasis on strabismus; (2) computerization of this theoretical ophthalmologic database using SINPE(c) and (3) interpretation of the information with demonstration of results to validate the protocol...

PURPOSE: To analyze the anatomical and functional results of keratoprosthesis using tibial bone autograft. METHODS: We reviewed 113 charts of patients who underwent tibial bone osteokeratoprothesis implantation at the Centro de Oftalmologia Barraquer. Kaplan-Meier survival curves with 95% confidence interval were calculated for functional success, defined as best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) ≥0.05 on the decimal scale, and for anatomical success, defined as retention of the keratoprosthesis lamina...

PURPOSE: To evaluate the corneal button of primary penetrating keratoplasty of patients diagnosed with congenital aniridia. The study took place at the Instituto Universitario Barraquer and the Centro de Oftalmología Barraquer. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of cases diagnosed with congenital aniridia was carried out. We analyzed 13 corneal buttons of 11 eyes with congenital aniridia. We only included those patients who underwent penetrating keratoplasty for the first time...

PURPOSE: To determine the association between language and number of citations of ophthalmology articles published in Brazilian journals. METHODS: This study was a systematic review. Original articles were identified by review of documents published at the two Brazilian ophthalmology journals indexed at Science Citation Index Expanded - SCIE ["Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia (ABO)" and "Revista Brasileira de Oftalmologia (RBO)"]. All document types ("articles" and "reviews") listed at SCIE in English (English Group) or in Portuguese (Portuguese Group) from January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2009 were included, except: "editorial materials"; "corrections"; "letters"; and "biographical items"...
