Down syndrome caused by triplication of human chromosome 21 (HSA21) is the most frequent aneuploidy, resulting in mental retardation, intellectual disability and accelerated aging. Individuals with DS are at an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD)-like dementia, with up to 75% of DS people in their 60s developing dementia. Oxidative stress is widely accepted as a mechanism underlying a number of DS symptoms, such as accelerated aging and cognitive decline. Superoxide disumutase 1 (Sod1) and amiloyd precursor protein (App) genes are suggested as the candidate genes in HSA21 underlying the enhanced oxidative stress in individuals with DS...

Curcumin is currently being investigated for its capacity to treat many types of cancer and to prevent the neuron damage that is observed in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, its clinical use is limited by its low stability and solubility in aqueous solutions. In this study, we propose a completely new class of boronated monocarbonyl analogues of Curcumin (BMAC, 6a-c), in which a carbonyl group replaces the Curcumin β-diketone functionality, and an ortho-carborane, an icosahedral boron cluster, substitutes one of the two phenolic rings...

OBJECTIVES: Primary localized amyloidosis of the urinary bladder generally has a benign course. On the contrary, secondary amyloidosis, a consequence of systemic amyloidosis, may have massive bleeding and produce complications such as bladder rupture or lifethreatening hemodynamic problems requiring desperate hemostatic procedures such as hypogastric artery embolization or ligature, or cystectomy. We report one case in which hemostasis was achieved by a Mickulicz transurethral bladder tamponage...
