BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis and therapeutic interventions can greatly enhance the developmental trajectory of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, the etiology of ASD is not completely understood. The presence of confounding factors from environment and genetics has increased the difficulty of the identification of diagnostic biomarkers for ASD. AIM: To estimate and interpret the causal relationship between ASD and metabolite profile, taking into consideration both genetic and environmental influences...

The present reported work deals with the ability of Togolese plants' essential oils (EOs) to act as repellents for Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in order to use them as personal protective requirements or actions against mosquito bites and therefore to drastically reduce the risk of contracting dengue or yellow fever. EOs studied here were extracted from dry leaves of Ageratum conyzoides L., Eucalyptus citriodora Hook, and Lantana camara Linn, three plants that were collected at different daytimes (7 a.m., 1 p.m...

BACKGROUND: Aluminum phosphide is a commonly used pesticide, particularly in developing countries where uncontrolled insecticides and pesticides are commonly prevalent. Mortalities have been reported due to accidental and suicidal exposures to aluminum phosphide. To date, there has been no reported mortality case of aluminum phosphide in Lebanon. In addition, there is no specific antidote for aluminum phosphide toxicity and the treatment is mainly supportive. This is why awareness should be spread about this case to include it in the differential diagnoses and enhance prompt management and response in future encounters...

OBJECTIVE: To update the 2010 CNGOF clinical practice guidelines for the first-line management of infertile couples. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five major themes (first-line assessment of the infertile woman, first-line assessment of the infertile man, prevention of exposure to environmental factors, initial management using ovulation induction regimens, first-line reproductive surgery) were identified, enabling 28 questions to be formulated using the PICO (Patients, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) format...

The varicella vaccine is recommended for women with no history of varicella who are planning to become pregnant, as well as for post-pregnancy women, to prevent the occurrence of this illness and its severe complications, especially an embryopathy, when it occurs in a pregnant woman (congenital varicella syndrome). This live attenuated vaccine should not be administered during pregnancy, nor in the month preceding it. However, when this occurs inadvertently, the data collected on the outcomes of exposed pregnancies, although few in women seronegative at the time of vaccination, allow to reassure the patients to date, as no congenital varicella syndrome has been reported to date following accidental vaccination in early pregnancy...

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a class of emerging organic pollutants characterized by high toxicity, environmental persistence, and widespread detection in water sources. The removal of PFASs from water is a matter of global concern, given their detrimental impact on both the environment and public health. Many commonly used PFAS adsorbents demonstrate limited adsorption capacities and/or slow adsorption kinetics. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the development of efficient adsorbents. For the first time, this work systematically investigated the performance of a deep eutectic solvent (DES)-based amorphous metal-organic framework (MOF) for the adsorption of PFASs with different carbon-chain lengths under the state of the mixture in aquatic environments...

Diagnostic of transsexualism and gender incongruence are terms to describe individuals whose self-identity does not match their sex assignment at birth. A transgender woman is an individual assigned male at birth (AMAB) on the basis of the external or internal genitalia who identifies and lives as a woman. In recent decades, a significant increase in the number of transgender people has been reported. Although, its etiology is unknown, biological, anatomical, genetic, environmental and cultural factors have been suggested to contribute to gender variation...

Chemical fertilizers are the primary source of crop nutrition; however, their increasing rate of application has created environmental hazards, such as heavy metal toxicity and eutrophication. The synchronized use of chemical fertilizers and eco-friendly biological tools, such as microorganisms and biochar, may provide an efficient foundation to promote sustainable agriculture. Therefore, the current study aimed to optimize the nutrient uptake using an inorganic fertilizer, sulfate of potash (SOP) from the plant growth-promoting fungus Bipolaris maydis AF7, and biochar under heavy metal toxicity conditions in rice...

OBJECTIVES: Upper limb lymphedema secondary to breast cancer treatment is the leading cause of lymphedema in France. Despite improved surgical practices and de-escalation of radiotherapy, the risk of lymphedema after breast cancer still affects 5-20% of patients, with this variation depending on the measurement method used and the population studied. Lymphedema has a negative impact on quality of life and body image, and their possible occurrence remains a major concern for all women treated for breast cancer...

Heated tobacco (HT), a new tobacco product, is presented by the tobacco industry as an effective and safe alternative to cigarettes. Even if the quantities of harmful compounds emitted by HT are lower than those found in cigarette smoke, this reduction in exposure cannot be equated with a reduction in risk. No study has provided evidence that switching from cigarettes to HT reduces the risk of tobacco-related diseases. HT cannot be considered as a cigarette cessation product and was even designed as a product to initiate or return to tobacco consumption...

Recent research has highlighted a correlation between exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5 ) and the development of systemic insulin resistance (IR) along with an elevated risk of diabetes. Ceramide has emerged as one of the pathogenic mechanisms contributing to IR. The inhibition of acid sphingomyelinase (ASMase) activity by desipramine (DES) has been shown to effectively reduce ceramide levels. In the present study, 24 female C57BL/6 N mice were randomized into one of the four groups: the filtered air exposure (FA) group, the concentrated PM2...

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious viral disease of small ruminants that threatens livelihoods and food security in developing countries and, in some cases, wild ungulate species conservation. The Greater Serengeti-Mara Ecosystem (GSME) encompasses one of the major wildlife populations of PPR virus (PPRV)-susceptible species left on earth, although no clinical disease has been reported so far. PURPOSE: We sought to evaluate the synergistic risk of postoperative thrombosis in patients with a history of COVID-19 who undergo major surgery. Major surgery and SARS-CoV-2 infection are independently associated with an increased risk of thrombosis, but the magnitude of additional risk beyond surgery conferred by a COVID-19 history on the development of perioperative thrombotic events has not been clearly elucidated in the literature. Germany has been considered free of terrestrial rabies since 2008 as a result of intensive vaccination and surveillance efforts but reservoirs of the lyssaviruses EBLV‑1 and EBLV‑2 persist in bat colonies and thus pose a potential risk of infection. We report on a patient who suffered a bat bite in an urban setting in which European bat lyssavirus 1 (EBLV-1) was detected in the euthanized bat. We performed active and passive postexposure prophylaxis (PEP). This case study illustrates the ongoing risk of rabies infection due to close bat contacts in Germany and is intended to sensitize primary care physicians to take such exposure events seriously and to perform a regular PEP including administration of rabies immunoglobulin...
