A 51-year-old man visited to our hospital because of chest discomfort and hematemesis. He was diagnosed with Mallory-Weiss syndrome and followed in outpatient clinic. One week later, he visited our hospital again for fever and discomfort. Chest computed tomography (CT) showed a foreign body perforated in the mediastinum in the upper esophagus, and he was urgently hospitalized for surgical removal of esophageal foreign body. Before surgery he vomited the esophageal foreign body with a lot of blood. Hematemesis was stopped spontaneously and contrast-enhanced CT revealed a pseudoaneurysm in the distal aortic arch, so thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) was performed to prevent rupture...

Cerebral aneurysms are rarely encountered in pregnancy. Their antepartum and intrapartum management remain clinically challenging, primarily due to concern regarding potential rupture. We present a case of a patient in preterm labor at risk for imminent delivery with a 10mm cerebral aneurysm. She was recommended for cesarean section (CS), yet delivered via spontaneous vaginal delivery in the operating room after induction of general anesthesia for the intended CS. Her aneurysm and neurologic function remained intact postpartum...

INTRODUCTION: We present a case of a patient with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) and keratoglobus (KG) who had a near-total rupture of Descemet's membrane followed by spontaneous corneal clearing. This case is unique in that it demonstrates the potentially excellent outcome of conservative treatment for Descemet's rupture in patients with KG and illustrates the impressive migratory potential of healthy endothelial cells. CASE PRESENTATION: An 11-year-old girl with OI and KG who had rupture and near-total detachment of Descemet's membrane presented for evaluation...

Atraumatic splenic rupture is a serious intraabdominal emergency that requires emergent intervention. This can be due to a number of causes. In this case report, we introduce a rare cause of atraumatic splenic rupture, which is an otherwise benign asymptomatic disease that only manifests clinically upon rupture, namely splenic peliosis. There is limited existing knowledge concerning the disease's etiology and diagnosis; however, this study presents the possible etiological explanations, associated risk factors, and possible radiologic diagnostic modalities...

The decision to pursue a trial of labor after cesarean delivery is complex and depends on patient preference, the likelihood of successful vaginal birth after cesarean delivery, assessment of the risks vs benefits of trial of labor after cesarean delivery, and available resources to support safe trial of labor after cesarean delivery at the planned birthing center. The most feared complication of trial of labor after cesarean delivery is uterine rupture, which can have catastrophic consequences, including substantial maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality...

Hyalectan cleavage may play an important role in extracellular matrix remodeling. However, the proteolytic enzyme responsible for hyalectan degradation for fetal membrane rupture at parturition remains unknown. Here, we reveal that versican (VCAN) is the major hyalectan in the amnion, where its cleavage increases at parturition with spontaneous rupture of membrane. We further reveal that ADAMTS4 is a crucial proteolytic enzyme for VCAN cleavage in the amnion. Inflammatory factors may enhance VCAN cleavage by inducing ADAMTS4 expression and inhibiting ADAMTS4 endocytosis in amnion fibroblasts...

Aortocardiac fistula is a broad term used to describe defects between the aorta and other cardiac chambers that can occur in humans and animals. A 1.5-year-old, 1.7 kg, male castrated Holland lop rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) was presented for a two-week history of a heart murmur with corresponding cardiomegaly on radiographs. Physical examination confirmed a grade-V/VI continuous heart murmur on the right sternal border with a regular rhythm and a gallop sound. Echocardiography revealed an aortic-to-right-atrial fistula causing severe left-sided volume overload...

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous coronary artery rupture (SCAR) is a rare and life-threatening complication after lung cancer surgery. We present a case of SCAR following left upper lobectomy, successfully managed through emergency thoracotomy and coronary artery ligation. CASE SUMMARY: A 61-year-old male patient underwent left upper lobectomy and mediastinal lymph node dissection for lung cancer. The surgery was performed using single-port video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, and there were no observed complications during the procedure...

INTRODUCTION: Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is one of the most frequent neurosurgical emergencies, most of them due to intracranial aneurysm rupture. Hydrocephalus is a prevalent complication with a high rate of complications. The aims of this study are to identify predictors of shunt-dependent hydrocephalus following aneurysmal SAH and to quantify the complications arising from ventriculoperitoneal shunts. METHODS: This study is about an observational retrospective analytic study of the patients with spontaneous SAH admitted to Miguel Servet Universitary Hospital between 2017 and 2022...

Left ventricular free wall rupture is a lethal complication of myocardial infarction. Although emergent surgical repair is the treatment of choice, the method of repair remains highly individualized. This report presents a case of spontaneous coronary artery dissection in a patient with Turner syndrome that led to left ventricular free wall rupture and was successfully repaired on cardiopulmonary bypass using a suture-free technique with the EVARREST Fibrin Sealant Patch.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Spontaneous rupture of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a life-threatening complication, and patients who experience it are formally assigned to stage T4 in the TNM system, while many clinicians informally assign them to stage C in the more widely used Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) system. The present study explored whether these re-staging practices are appropriate for HCC patients who suffer tumor rupture. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 1952 HCC patients who underwent hepatic resection at our hospital between January 2017 and June 2021...

Hydatid cyst is a zoonotic disease and is an important health problem, especially in developing countries. Hydatic cysts are typically observed in the liver and lungs. Cardiac and brain involvement are rare manifestations. Cardiac hydatic cysts are usually located in the left ventricle. Brain involvement is frequently seen as a primary cerebral cyst and is almost always solitary. However, secondary intracerebral cysts are also seen as a result of cardiac cysts rupturing into the left ventricle spontaneously or iatrogenically, and these are usually multiple...

BACKGROUND: Globally, preterm birth remains the leading cause of death in children younger than 5 years old. Spontaneous preterm birth is comprised of two events that may or may not occur simultaneously: preterm labor and preterm prelabor rupture of membranes (PPROM). To further explore the concept that spontaneous preterm birth can result from the initializing of two separate but overlapping pathological events, we compared fetal membrane tissue from preterm labor deliveries to fetal tissue from preterm labor with PPROM deliveries...

Vascular Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (vEDS) is a rare and potentially life-threatening inherited connective tissue disorder. Patients with vEDS can present with spontaneous arterial dissections and ruptured aneurysms. There are previous reports of large artery dissections and vessel rupture following conventional catheter diagnostic angiography. We present the case of a patient with vEDS who had a spontaneous carotid-cavernous fistula (CCF) and visceral aneurysms, associated with a normal variant of corona mortis...
