Both periodontal disease (PD) and metabolic syndrome (MS) represent disorders of concern worldwide. Current evidence indicates that PD and MS might negatively influence each other, increasing the risk for cardiovascular diseases (CVD), via mutual inflammatory pathways. A failure of the inflammation resolution mechanisms is crucial for these comorbidities. Fish oil-derived omega-3 has been linked with resolution-driven responses in different pathological conditions during the last years. This study evaluated the impacts of omega-3 supplementation in a rat model combining ligature-induced PD and 10% fructose intake-elicited MS...

Background: The impact of lifestyle factors on circulating fibroblast growth factor 21 (cFGF21) remains unclear. We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the association between lifestyle factors and cFGF21 levels. Methods: We included studies that evaluated the effects of different lifestyles on cFGF21 concentration in adults, which included smoking, exercise, diets, alcohol consumption and weight loss. Random effects models or fixed effects models were used for meta-analysis to calculate the standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval according to the heterogeneity among studies...

Healthy plant-based diets (hPBD) are being promoted to reduce the risks of cardiovascular and associated diseases. This study investigates short-term adherence to a hPBD to examine whether these dietary changes impact weight and cardiovascular risk factors. A simple, uncontrolled, before and after design was used. Twenty women (mean BMI 31 ± 4 kg/m2 ) participated in a 6-week hPBD intervention. Participants completed a 3-week reset, eliminating all refined sugar, heavily processed foods, artificial sweeteners, alcohol, meat, fish, dairy and oil from their diets, which could then be reintroduced into their diet if the participant chose to do so...

Background and Objectives : The prevalence of cachexia has increased across all of the cancer types and accounts for up to 20% of cancer-related deaths. This paper is a systematic review of nutritional interventions aiming to improve cachexia outcomes in cancer, focusing on weight gain. Materials and Methods : A search in Medline and Elsevier databases for articles up until the 23 January 2022, was conducted. Results : Out of 5732 screened records, 26 publications were included in the final analysis. Four randomized clinical trials showed a significant body weight (BW) increase in patients treated with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), β-hydroxy-beta-methyl butyrate (β-HMB), arginine, and glutamine or marine phospholipids (MPL)...

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is vital in the meat composition of broilers which is helpful to maintain a healthy diet in humans. The purpose of this study is to observe the effect of DHA from fish oil on growth performance, organ weight, and meat quality along with the blood profile of broilers. A total of 1600, 1-day old, Ross 308 broilers with an average body weight of 43.15 ± 1.35 g were used in 5 weeks trail. Birds were randomly allotted into one of four dietary treatment groups named: control (CON), basal diet; treatment (TRT)1, CON + 0...

The general nutritional status of cancer patients could be a central determinant of cancer treatment-related toxicity and an indicator of cancer symptoms such as cancer-related cachexia and weight loss. This narrative scientific review covers the impact of dietary patterns (for example, Mediterranean diet, short-term fasting, ketogenic diet), dietary components (for example, fruits and vegetables, fish oils, turmeric/curcumin, dietary fiber, phytochemicals, vitamin/mineral dietary supplements), and the gut microbiota on symptoms, toxicities, and adverse events associated with cancer treatment...

Low-carbohydrate and high-fat diets have been used for body weight (BW) control, but their adverse effects on lipid profiles have raised concern. Fish oil (FO), rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, has profound effects on lipid metabolism. We hypothesized that FO supplementation might improve the lipid metabolic disturbance elicited by low-carbohydrate and high-fat diets. Male SD rats were randomized into normal control diet (NC), high-fat diet (HF), and low-carbohydrate/high-fat diet (LC) groups in experiment 1, and NC, LC, LC + 5% FO (5CF), and LC + 10% FO diet (10CF) groups in experiment 2...

In modern aquaculture systems, feed is the main source of the waste being produced, including expired aquafeeds. There is a link between the expiration date of aquafeeds enriched with fish oil for marine fish and the observation of several physical and microbiological changes. Among these, lipid oxidation is worth highlighting, as this process is responsible for the loss of palatability of aquafeeds, which can lead to feeding rejection by the species being farmed. In this study, we used an expired fish aquafeed, which otherwise would be discarded as waste, as a substrate to feed Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae...

Gelatin coating is an effective way to prolong the shelf life of meat products. Aiming at solving the problem of flavor deterioration during the storage of pork at room temperature, pork coating technology was developed to preserve the pork at 25 °C, and the comprehensive sensory analysis of vision, touch, smell, and taste was used to study the effect of coating on preservation of pork flavor. Herein, uncoated (control) and coated pork samples (including gelatin coating and gelatin coating incorporated with ginger essential oil) were analyzed to investigate the integrity of pork periodically during storage at 25 °C for weight loss, color, texture (springiness, chewiness, cohesiveness, gumminess, and hardness), microstructure, odor (electronic nose), taste (electronic tongue), volatile flavor substance, and taste ingredients...

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a worldwide public health problem characterized by fat tissue accumulation, favouring adipose tissue and metabolic alterations. Increasing energy expenditure (EE) through brown adipose tissue activation and white adipose tissue (WAT) browning has gained relevance as a therapeutic approach. Different bioactive compounds, such as n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), have been shown to induce those thermogenic effects. This process is regulated by the gut microbiota as well...

Dysregulated lipoprotein metabolism is a major case of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Use of stable isotope tracers and compartmental modelling have provided deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying lipid disorders in patients at high risk of ASCVD, including familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), elevated lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] and metabolic syndrome (MetS). In patients with FH, deficiency in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor activity does not only impair the catabolism of LDL, but also induces hepatic overproduction and decreases catabolism of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (TRLs)...

Refined cobia liver oil is a nutritional supplement (CBLO) that is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), such as DHA and EPA; however, PUFAs are prone to oxidation. In this study, the fabrication of chitosan-TPP-encapsulated CBLO nanoparticles (CS@CBLO NPs) was achieved by a two-step method, including emulsification and the ionic gelation of chitosan with sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP). The obtained nanoparticles were inspected by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and showed a positively charged surface with a z-average diameter of between 174 and 456 nm...

A subset of patients with obesity do not respond to dietary and lifestyle changes. Development of the Staged Transitional Eating Plan (STEP) in 2012 provided a ketogenic advanced dietary option for these specific patients. RECENT FINDINGS: The goal of STEP is to facilitate weight loss, while assuring adequacy and the promotion of health through the abundant inclusion of vegetables, fatty fish, nuts, olive oil, and other foods consistent with the Mediterranean Diet...

Multiple infections of several bacterial species are often observed under natural farm conditions. The infections would cause a much more significant loss compared to a single infectious agent. Vaccination is an essential strategy to prevent diseases in aquaculture, and oral vaccination has been proposed as a promising technique since it requires no handling of the fish and is easy to perform.
