BACKGROUND: It is unusual for the hips to be affected by psoriatic arthritis. But in that rare cases, totalhip replacement (THR) is at present an accepted treatment in patients with severe and painfull deformity. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the results of THR in patients suffering from psoriatic arthritis of the hip, operated from 2000 to 2008 in the Orthopaedic and Traumatologic Department of Poznan University of Medical Sciences. Authors describe a case of a patient, by whom the first cup arthroplasty in Slovakia was implanted by prof. Cervenanský in 1948. 17 years after the implantation a gradual onset of limitation in motion began. A painfull contracture developed with a functional shortening of the lower extremity. 50 years after the implantation of the cup arthroplasty a conversion to a cemented total hip prosthesis was successfuly realised with a good result. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The goal of this study was to evaluate late results of hip shelf arthroplasty in adults after a minimum of 15 years follow-up. MATERIAL: 65 hip shelf arthroplasty performed for painful hip dysplasia between 1964 and 1977 were studied retrospectively in 1992. These 65 procedures were performed in 57 patients mean aged 32 +/- 14 years [17-56]. Nine patients (9 hips) were excluded (2 deceaded, 5 lost for follow-up, and two reoperated because of severe infection)...
