OBJECTIVE: Otitis media with effusion is common in children with cleft palates. This study aimed to investigate the link between palatal closure techniques and audiological outcomes. METHODS: In this retrospective-prospective cohort study, we examined the relationship between palate repair techniques and hearing outcomes in children with cleft palates. From 2017 to 2022, 190 ears of 95 cleft patients were studied at the Cleft Lip and Palate Department of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences...

Congenital myopathies are a genetically heterogeneous group of neuromuscular disorders that commonly present with congenital hypotonia and weakness but can also present broadly. The most severe presentation is neonatal with arthrogryposis and, rarely, fetal akinesia and pterygia, features also seen in lethal multiple pterygium syndrome (LMPS). We describe two fetuses with similar phenotype, including hydrops fetalis, large cystic hygromas, bilateral talipes, and fetal akinesia in the second trimester. Genetic diagnoses were made using exome sequencing...

George Kantorowicz was a senior lecturer/consultant in conservative dentistry at the Royal Dental Hospital who provided ground-breaking treatment for cleft palate children at Great Ormond Street Hospital. His father, Alfred, was a Jewish professor, dean at Bonn Dental School and a world-famous advocate of mobile dental surgeries and prevention for children's dental health, until the Nazis put him in a concentration camp. After important interventions, he became director of Istanbul Dental Institute.

The treatment of newborns with craniofacial abnormalities such as cleft lip and/or palate poses special challenges for healthcare providers. Often, the collaboration of an interdisciplinary team of pediatricians, orthodontists, and oral and maxillofacial surgeons is necessary. Therapy using feeding or stimulation plates can improve feeding and strengthen orofacial muscle tone. The treatment of patients with cleft lip and palate using conventionally manufactured feeding plates as well as the treatment of patients with reduced orofacial muscle tone through stimulation plates therapy are established and widely used methods...

INTRODUCTION: A cleft palate is a common type of facial malformation. Compensatory articulation errors are one of the important causes of unclear speech in children with cleft palate. Tele-practice (TP) helps to connect therapists and clients for assessment and therapy. Our goal is to investigate the effectiveness of articulation therapy through tele-practice on cleft palate children in Khuzestan Province during the COVID-19 pandemic. MATERIALS & METHODS: Before starting the treatment, a 20-min speech sample was recorded individually from all the children...

Introduction Orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning encounter distinctive complexities when dealing with cleft lip and palate anomalies. This research endeavors to thoroughly examine skeletal and dental characteristics through cephalometric analyses among individuals with bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP) within the central Indian population. Due to anatomical variations and growth constraints, traditional cephalometric mean values derived from standard population studies are often inadequate for these cases...

BACKGROUNDS: Nasoalveolar molding (NAM) application is among presurgical management (PSM) techniques used for infants with cleft lip and palate (CLP). It helps to approximate the palatal cleft and to reshape the nasoalveolar complex prior to primary lip repair. This study aimed to explore types of PSM and the dental speciality provision for infants with CLP in Baghdad. The status of NAM usage and surgeons' perceptions toward NAM usage were assessed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a cross-sectional paper-based questionnaire study that collected responses of surgeons perform primary lip and nose repair regarding PSM...

OBJECTIVE: To determine if the elastic chain premaxillary retraction (ECPR) appliance increases inter-medial and inter-lateral canthal dimension in patients with bilateral complete cleft lip and palate (BCLP). DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Specialized tertiary care facility. PATIENTS, PARTICIPANTS: 126 patients with BCLP; 75 had ECPR, 51 had no pre-surgical manipulation. INTERVENTIONS: Three-dimensional facial photographs were obtained prior to insertion of appliance (T0), post-appliance therapy prior to appliance removal/labial repair (T1), and several months after labial repair (T2) for a longitudinal ECPR group, and were obtained after age 4 years (T3) for a non-longitudinal ECPR group and for the non-ECPR group...

Congenital heart defects, facial dysmorphism and intellectual development disorder (CHDFIDD) is associated with mutations in CDK13 gene, which encodes a transcription regulating Cyclin-dependent kinase 13 (CDK13). Here, we focused on development of craniofacial structures and analyzed early embryonic stages of CHDFIDD mouse models with hypomorphic mutation in Cdk13 gene, which exhibits cleft lip/palate and knockout of Cdk13 with stronger phenotype including midfacial cleft. Cdk13 was found to be physiologically strongly expressed in the mouse embryonic craniofacial structures, namely in the forebrain, nasal epithelium and maxillary mesenchyme...

BACKGROUND: Individuals with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) may grow up with a visible facial difference, alongside speech and/or hearing challenges. Self-perceptions are stronger predictors of psychosocial adjustment than objective assessments, highlighting the importance of patient-reported outcome measures. Previously titled the Satisfaction with Appearance (SwA) questionnaire, the Cleft Hearing, Appearance and Speech Questionnaire (CHASQ) has been used in several countries to assess patient satisfaction, guide clinical decision-making, and conduct craniofacial research, but has lacked general population norms from which to draw comparisons...

Cleft palate repair is a common reconstructive procedure that can involve significant blood loss. Tranexamic acid (TXA) has been proposed to minimise blood loss during various surgical procedures, but its effectiveness in cleft palate repair remains unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the effectiveness of TXA to reduce postoperative blood loss. Adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we conducted a comprehensive search across multiple databases, including PubMed, Cochrane, and Web of Science, to identify relevant studies published up to September 2023...

Congenital lip sinus is a rare entity with upper lip sinus being rarer than the lower lip sinus. It can be an isolated entity or associated with cleft lip, palate or Van der Woude syndrome. Syndromic association requires proper evaluation and aggressive surgical treatment. Preoperative delineation of the sinus tract with ultrasound sonography or MRI is mandatory. Simple excision is sufficient in cases of isolated sinuses. In this article, we report an infant with upper lip sinus managed successfully with simple excision and reviewed the literature...

Oral causes of dysphagia in infancy may involve the lips, the tongue, or the palate. Whereas ankyloglossia is commonly diagnosed in infants with dysphagia, assessment of the need for surgical intervention may be less straightforward. Tongue size (macroglossia) may be associated with dysphagia as it may cause limitation of movement of the food or milk bolus by the lips or cheeks. Congenital conditions such as cleft lip and palate, micrognathia, or craniofacial microsomia may also be associated with dysphagia...

Children with isolated cleft of the lip and/or palate (iCL/P) have been shown to be at risk for impaired reading ability. Structural and functional neuroimaging studies have revealed subtle morphological and functional abnormalities correlated to cognition and reading ability. However, the integrity of white matter tracts and their potential relationship to reading performance in iCL/P is under-studied. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate white matter integrity related to cognition and reading skills among participants with and without iCL/P...
