RATIONALE: Lymphoid interstitial pneumonia (LIP) is a rare disease with lymphocytic infiltration of the alveolar interstitial and air spaces, sometimes classified as a clonal lymphoproliferative disease (LPD) with high prevalence in patients with immunodysregulation. Although association of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma development with infectious agents has been well described, it is not so in the case of LIP. Attempts to demonstrate an infective cause by direct microbe detection have failed, but association with atypical specific immune response to opportunistic infectious agent has not been studied...

BACKGROUND: Bronchoalveolar lavage is considered a helpful tool in the diagnosis of diffuse parenchimal lung diseases such as sarcoidosis. CD4/CD8 ratio is higly specific but not sensitive to distinguish sarcoidosis and other intestitial lung diseases. We aimed to compare the diagnostic value of CD4/CD8 ratio and other lmphocyte subpopulations such as CD3+16+56, CD103+, CD4+CD103+, CD8+CD103+ in bronchoalveolar lavage to distinguish sarcoidosis and other nonsarcoidosis interstitial lung diseases...

INTRODUCTION: The Cajal-like intestitial cells (ICCs) act as a pacemaker and are responsible for generating smooth muscle activity in the gastrointestinal tract (GI). Interstitial cells that resemble ICCs in the GI have been identified in the urinary bladder. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This review is based on a systemic literature research. The medline/pubmed, scopus, embase, and Web of Science databases were browsed in order to identify original and review articles, as well as editorials relating to cajal-like cells, urinary bladder, detrusor overactivity, overactive bladder, glivec, etc...

We introduce a male patient with bilateral chryptorchidism submitted to surgery; during the intervention, macroscopically round macules were seen in the outer surface of both testes. In the round macules histological study, groups of seminiferous tubules were observed, including stroma and Leydig's intestitial cells surrounded of tunica albuginea, isolated from the rest of testicular parenchymal tissue; the diagnosis "Ectopic testicular parenchyma tissue" was confirmed by histopathological study. Due to the seminiferous tubules are surrounded by the tunica albuginea, with no apparent connection to the rest of the testicular parenchyma, a long-term assessment is required, both during puberty as well as in adulthood; owing to that can mislead and make unnecessary laparotomies and orchiectomies in the future...

To clarify the interrelationship between urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) and the progression of gastric cancer, uPAR expression in gastric cancer was studied by the reverse transcription (RT)-PCR and immunohistochemistry. uPAR mRNA was expressed in 44 of 46 primary gastric cancers and uPAR immunoreactivity was found in 21 (14%) of 155 tumors. uPAR immunoreactivity was also observed in the fibroblast-like cells and the inflammatory cells including macrophages. The intensity of uPAR immunoreactivity of these cells was weaker than that of cancer cells...

Although the concept of purinergic signalling arose from experiments designed to find the identity of the non-adrenergic, non-cholinergic (NANC) inhibitory neurotransmitter in the gut, it has taken many years for the more general importance of the various roles of ATP as a physiological messenger in the gut to be recognized. Firstly, vasoactive intestitial polypeptide (VIP) and later nitric oxide (NO) were considered the NANC transmitter and it was only later, after the concept of cotransmission was established, that ATP, NO and VIP were recognized as cotransmitters in NANC nerves, although the proportions vary in different gut regions...

The cases of chromosome 11 abnormalities in leukemic bone marrow cells have constituted 14.0% in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), 18.7% in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and 16.7% in refractory anemia (RA). The bands of the short arms 11p13, 11p14, llp15 and the long arms 11q14, 11q21, 11q23 were involved in chromosome rearrangements. The rearrangements of the band 11q23 were detected more often. Reciprocal translocations were found with the highest frequency, while para- and pericentic invertions, terminal and intestitial deletions occured with the lower incidence...

Morphine was administered intraperitoneally to Wistar rats at increasing doses from 10 to 60 mg pay during 8 days. Cardiomyocyte damage in the form of myocytolysis and wave-like deformations of muscle fibers prevailed at the level of light microscopy. Microcirculatory alterations were characteristic: stasis, sludge-phenomenon, perivascular and interstitial oedema, diapedes hemorrhages, focal proliferation of vascular wall cells. Ultrastructural lesions were as follows: subsarcolemma edema, mitochondrial destruction, formation of giant forms of mitochondria, single contractures, increasing micropinocytosis, intestitial edema...

AIMS AND METHODS: Pulmonary parenchymal disease is common in patients with connective tissue disorders (CTDs). However, most reports precede recognition of non-specific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP). We have therefore reviewed 54 lung biopsies from 37 patients with polymyositis/dermatomyositis (PM/DM) (n = 13), Sjögren's syndrome (n = 5), rheumatoid arthritis (n = 17) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) (n = 2) to assess the overall and relative frequencies of patterns of interstitial pneumonia and their impact on prognosis...

AIM: The pathophysiology underlying gastrointestinal complications of long-standing diabetes is poorly understood. Recent evidence suggests an important role of intestitial cells of cajal in controlling gastrointestinal motility. The aim of this study was to clarify the changes of ultrastructural characteristics of interstitial cells of cajal in stomach of diabetic gastro-electric dysrhythmic rats. METHODS: Rats were randomly divided into diabetic group and control group, the model of diabetic rats was established by peritoneally injection of streptozotocin...

Interstitial cystitis, a disease of unknown origin which occurs predominantly in women, causes great pain and considerable disability. In most cases, the long interval between onset of symptoms and establishment of the diagnosis is due to a lack of familiarity with the disease.Although there is no "cure," several forms of therapy may lead to improvement. In a series of 27 patients, 15 received benefit from distention of the bladder through the use of a solution of monoxychlorosene.

The stem cell kinase CD117 has recently been found to play an important role in the development of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC), which are currently regarded as pacemaker cells of the gastrointestinal tract. CD117 is expressed in both gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) and ICC, with the latter regarded by many as the progenitor cells of GIST. The authors investigated immunoreactivity of 25 normal surgically removed small intestinal tissues and correlated the findings with electron microscopy (EM) on 12 cases...

Type III serum procollagen (Pc III) was measured by radio-immunossay in 30 rheumatoid arthritis(RA) patients with or without intestitial lung disease(ILD) and in 15 normal control subjects. The results showed that Pc III of RA patients were significantly higher than that of normal controls. Pc III levels is higher in RA patients with ILD than that in RA patients without ILD. The results suggested that RA patients with higher serum Pc III is more vulnerable to ILD, and the determination of Pc III might be valuable to show the complicated ILD...

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The etiology of congenital segmental dilatation (CSD) of bowel remains elusive. Intestitial cell of Cajal plays a role in the pace making of the intestine. Its abnormality has been documented in a variety of conditions of abnormal intestinal motility. The current study attempts to evaluate the roles of intestitial cells of Cajal, enteric nervous system, and smooth muscle in segmental dilatation of small bowel. METHODS: Resected specimen from a neonate with segmental dilatation of jejunum was stained with H&E, Alcian blue, Periodic Acid-Schiff (PAS), and immunostained with S100, Ret, MAP5, and c-kit antibodies using the standard immunohistochemical process...

Fibroblast migration, proliferation, extracellular matrix protein synthesis and degradation, all of which play important roles in inflammation, are themselves induced by various growth factors and cytokines. Less is known about the interaction of these substances on lung fibroblast function in pulmonary fibrosis. The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of PDGF alone and in combination with IL-1beta and TNF-alpha on the production of human lung fibroblast matrix metalloproteinases, proliferation, and the chemotactic response...

The epidemiological assessment of intestitial cystitis (IC) is not definitive as no diagnostic criteria, such as endoscopy or biochemical and anatomopathological examination, exist. The diagnosis is solely based on symptoms like urgency, frequency and pelvic pain. The first studies on the population date back from 20 years ago and show a percentage of 10 cases every 100 thousand inhabitants. There is weak link between genetic factors, immunological diseases, previous cystitis or eating habits and intestitial cystitis...
