An aerobic, Gram-stain negative, short rod-shaped and motile strain, 36-5-1(T), was isolated from the roots of Nitraria sibirica in Zhangye city, Gansu province, north-west of China. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence and two housekeeping genes (glnA and atpD) indicated that the strain represents a novel species closely related to the Devosia, Rhizobium and Devosia genera with 98.3, 96.2 and 91.1% similarities, respectively. The strain 36-5-1(T) contained Q-10 as the predominant ubiquinone and 16:0 (36...

INTRODUCTION: The literature on DSM-5's 'Major Depressive Disorder with lifetime mixed features' (MDD-MF) is limited. This study investigated MDD-MF's potential inclusion into a bipolar spectrum. METHODS: We recruited 287 patients with Bipolar I disorder (BD-I), BD-II, MDD-MF or 'MDD without lifetime mixed features' (MDD-noMF); most (N=280) were stabilized for at least one year on medication. Sixteen validators (clinical features, psychiatric family history, temperament, stabilizing treatment) were compared across groups and subjected to trend analyses...

Pyrus pyrifolia (Asian pear) cell cultures respond to yeast extract (YE) treatment by accumulating benzoate-derived biphenyl phytoalexins, namely, noraucuparin and aucuparin. Biphenyl phytoalexins are defense-marker metabolites of the sub-tribe Malinae of the family Rosaceae. The substrates for biphenyl biosynthesis are benzoyl-CoA and malonyl-CoA, which combine in the presence of biphenyl synthase (BIS) to produce 3,5-dihydroxybiphneyl. In the non-β-oxidative pathway, benzoyl-CoA is directly derived from benzoic acid in a reaction catalyzed by benzoate-CoA ligase (BZL)...

BACKGROUND: Balance in the immune system plays roles in bipolar disorder (BD) and its metabolic co-morbidities. Memantine is an NMDA receptor antagonist with anti-inflammatory effects. However, the effects of memantine adjunct treatment on metabolic status of BD are unclear. METHODS: During the 12 weeks period, a total of 191 BD patients were enrolled and split into valproate (VPA) + placebo and VPA + memantine (5mg/day) arms. The fasting plasma levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP) and metabolic indices were assessed...

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is known for high mortality and limited available treatments. Aberrant activation of the Wnt and Notch signaling pathways is critical to liver carcinogenesis and progression. Here, we identified a small molecule, bruceine D (BD), as a Notch inhibitor, using an RBP-Jκ-dependent luciferase-reporter system. BD significantly inhibited liver tumor growth and enhanced the therapeutic effects of sorafenib in various murine HCC models. Mechanistically, BD promotes proteasomal degradation of β-catenin and the depletion of its nuclear accumulation, which in turn disrupts the Wnt/β-catenin-dependent transcription of the Notch ligand Jagged1 in HCC...

Infectious diseases have serious impacts on human and wildlife populations, but the effects of a disease can vary, even among individuals or populations of the same host species. Identifying the reasons for this variation is key to understanding disease dynamics and mitigating infectious disease impacts, but disentangling cause and correlation during natural outbreaks is extremely challenging. This study aims to understand associations between symbiotic bacterial communities and an infectious disease, and examines multiple host populations before or after pathogen invasion to infer likely causal links...

BACKGROUND: Bacillary dysentery (BD) is an acute bacterial infection of the intestine caused by Shigella spp., with clinical symptoms ranging from fever to bloody diarrhoea to abdominal cramps to tenesmus. In Vietnam, enteric bacterial pathogens are an important cause of diarrhoea and most cases in children under 5 years of age are due to Shigella strains. The serogroups S. flexneri and S. sonnei are considered to be the most common. The main objective of this study was to, for the first time, assess the seasonal patterns and geographic distribution of BD in Vietnam, and to determine the climate risk factors associated with the incidence of BD in Kon Tum Province, where the highest rate of bacillary dysentery was observed from 1999 to 2013...

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder (BD) are traditionally distinguished on the basis of progressive deterioration and long-term outcome, but a more dimensional approach is warranted. There are limited data on the occurrence of manic symptoms in patients with schizophrenia. The aim of the current study was to search for patterns in the clinical symptomatology, which may suggest the presence of one or several mood disorders under the label of schizophrenia. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Hundred-seventy-five patients diagnosed with schizophrenia according to DSM-5 were included in the study...
