The effect of sevoflurane postconditioning (sevo-postC) cardioprotection is compromised in diabetes which is associated with increased oxidative stress. We hypothesized that antioxidant N-Acetylcysteine may enhance or restore sevo-postC cardioprotection in diabetes. Control or streptozotocin-induced Type 1 diabetic rats were either untreated or treated with N-Acetylcysteine for four weeks starting at five weeks after streptozotocin injection and were subjected to myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI), in the absence or presence of sevo-postC...

OBJECTIVE: To explore the role of spinal MAPK-ERK signal pathway in myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. METHODS: Sixty male Sprague-Dawley(SD) rats (80-100 g) were randomly divided into 3 groups: sham (n=10), PD98059 (n=25) and I/R groups (n=25). Three days after successful intrathecal implantation, 5 μg DMSO was injected intrathecally into the sham group, and then the left coronary arteries were separated without being tied. Rats in the I/R and PD98059 groups were injected with 5 μL DMSO and PD98059 (5 μg) 30 minutes before thoractomy respectively...

Early reperfusion after myocardial ischemia that is essential for tissue salvage also causes myocardial and vascular injury. Cardioprotection during reperfusion therapy is an essential aspect of treating myocardial infarction. Angiopoietin-1 is an endothelial-specific angiogenic factor. The potential effects of angiopoietin-1 on cardiomyocytes and vascular cells undergoing reperfusion have not been investigated. We propose a protective mechanism whereby angiopoietin-1 increases the integrity of the endothelial lining and exerts a direct survival effect on cardiomyocytes under myocardial ischemia followed by reperfusion...

AIM: To determine whether the cardioprotection of ischemic postconditioning and heptanol in ischemic heart against ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) is mediated by gap junction. METHODS: The effect of ischemic postconditioning, heptanol at different doses (0.03, 0.06, 0.30, and 0.60 mg/kg) and AAP10 (10 mg/kg) on the intact rat heart during 30 min ischemia and 2 h of reperfusion was observed. Ischemic postconditioning was achieved by 3 cycles of 10 s reperfusion/10 s regional ischemia starting at the beginning of the reperfusion...

OBJECTIVE: To observe whether ginsenoside Rg1 could reduce the infarcted area and improve the heart function by path of promoting bone marrow stem cells differentiated to vascular endothelial cells (VECs). METHODS: Bone marrow was drawn from rabbit's ilium and labelled with red fluorochrome DiI, then it was transferred again into the rabbit's body. The rabbits was then made into myocardiac infarction model. The model rabbits were divided into the control group and the ginsenoside Rgl treated group (treated group)...

OBJECTIVE: To observe the dynamic changes of plasma inflammatory cytokine interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) in patients with acute myocardiac infarction (AMI) before and after recanalization of the infarct related artery (IRA) and to observe the effect of recombinant human IL-1 receptor antagonist (rhIL-1ra) on the postischemic reperfused myocardium in experimental rabbits. METHODS: (1) ELISA was used to measure the plasma IL-1 beta of 22 AMI patients, 20 males and 2 females, aged 64 +/- 12, before emergency percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), and 12 hours and 24 hours after-intervention, and measure the plasma IL-1 beta of 8 healthy controls, 6 males and 2 females, aged 56 +/- 9...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate if adrenomedullin (Adm) is concerned with cardiac ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) process and to study its effects on I/R injury. METHODS: Plasma Adm dynamic levels were tested in 17 patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), who had got successful blood reperfusion through intravenous thrombolytic therapy. The indices of I/R injury were measured in I/R models of isolated perfused rat heart when Adm (10(-7) mol/L) was given in reperfusion period...

In a complex experimental study on 52 dogs the myocardium was examined after ischemia and reperfusion of various duration. Morphologic, metabolic, and functional findings proved that a short-term reperfusion after coronary occlusion for more than 2 hours has disadvantageous effects on the regression of ischemic lesions. During the early period (up to 3 days) this is caused by the "no-reflow" phenomenon. Combined qualitative and quantitative findings are required for correct appraisal of the ultrastructural alterations after reperfusion...
