Altering the physical and chemical properties of a layered material through intercalation has emerged as a unique strategy toward tunable applications. In this work, we demonstrate a wet chemical method to intercalate titanium, hafnium, and zirconium into 2D layered nanomaterials. The metals are intercalated using bis-tetrahydrofuran metal halide complexes. Metal intercalation is demonstrated in nanomaterials of Bi2 Se3 , Si2 Te3 , MoO3 , and GeS. This strategy intercalates, on average, 3 atm % or less of Hf, Ti, and Zr that share charge with the host nanomaterial...

We aimed to determine the risk factors for postoperative overactive bladder (OAB) in patients treated with an adjustable trans-obturator male system (ATOMS) for stress incontinence after radical treatment of prostate cancer. A prospective study was performed on 56 patients implanted with an ATOMS for PPI. Clinical and urodynamic information was recorded before and after ATOMS implantation. We built a multivariate model to find out the clinical and urodynamic factors that independently influenced postoperative OAB and the prognostic factors that influenced the efficacy of medical treatment of OAB...

Smart manufacturing needs cognitive computing methods to make the relevant systems more intelligent and autonomous. In this respect, bio-inspired cognitive computing methods (i.e., biologicalization) can play a vital role. This article is written from this perspective. In particular, this article provides a general overview of the bio-inspired computing method called DNA-Based Computing (DBC), including its theory and applications. The main theme of DBC is the central dogma of molecular biology (once information of DNA/RNA has got into a protein, it cannot get out again), i...

Prion diseases are fatal transmissible neurodegenerative disorders. Tremendous efforts have been made for prion diseases; however, no effective treatment is available. Several anti-prion compounds have a preference for which prion strains or prion-infected animal models to target. Styrylbenzoazole compound called cpd-B is effective in RML prion-infected mice but less so in 263K prion-infected mice, whereas hydroxypropyl methylcellulose is effective in 263K prion-infected mice but less so in RML prion-infected mice...

BACKGROUND: Studies on informal caregivers in Japan have been limited to family caregivers and largely conducted where family caregivers generally gather. Family caregivers who do not visit such places or non-family caregivers are generally overlooked, and data on these informal caregivers remains scant. Consequently, a framework is needed through which healthcare professionals can approach the informal caregivers of community-dwelling older persons. Therefore, this study approaches such informal caregivers and proposes a classification system for them from the starting point of older persons living in the community with cognitive impairment...

Unstructured biological macromolecules have attracted attention as protein aggregation inhibitors in living cells. Some are characterized by their free structural configuration, highly charged, and water-soluble. However, the importance of these properties in inhibiting protein aggregation remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effect of charged poly (amino acids), which mimic these properties, on aggregation of l-lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and compared their effects to monomeric amino acids and folded proteins...

We present the case of a 41-year-old man patient diagnosed with solitary left kidney with few cysts. He has a family history of unilateral renal agenesis (URA) but no for autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Genetic testing revealed PKD1 gene intron 11 heterozygous nucleotide variant c.2854-23G>T, but no gene mutation implicated in URA. Just eight cases of ADPKD with one kidney have been recorded globally. In Arabidopsis seedlings, inhibition of aspartate transcarbamoylase (ATC) and de novo pyrimidine synthesis resulted in pyrimidine starvation and developmental arrest a few days after germination. Synthesis of pyrimidine nucleotides by salvaging of exogenous uridine (Urd) restored normal seedling growth and development. We used this experimental system and transcriptional profiling to investigate genome-wide responses to changes in pyrimidine availability. Gene expression changes at different times after Urd supplementation of pyrimidine-starved seedlings were mapped to major pathways of nucleotide metabolism, in order to better understand potential coordination of pathway activities, at the level of transcription...

Endometrial cancer (EC) is the most frequent gynecologic cancer in postmenopausal women. Pathogenetic mechanisms that are related to the onset and progression of the disease are largely still unknown. A multi-omics strategy can help identify altered pathways that could be targeted for improving therapeutical approaches. In this study we used a multi-omics approach on four EC cell lines for the identification of common dysregulated pathways in type 1 and 2 ECs. Advances in genetic technologies have made genetic testing more accessible than ever before. However, depending on national, regional, legal, and health insurance circumstances, testing procedures may still need to be streamlined in real-world clinical practice. In cases of autosomal recessive disease with consanguinity, the mutation locus is necessarily isodisomy because both alleles originate from a common ancestral chromosome. Based on this premise, we implemented integrated genetic diagnostic methods using SNP array screening and long range PCR-based targeted NGS in a Japanese patient with xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) under the limitation of the national health insurance system...

Understanding the role of parton mass and Casimir color factors in the quantum chromodynamics parton shower represents an important step in characterizing the emission properties of heavy quarks. Recent experimental advances in jet substructure techniques have provided the opportunity to isolate and characterize gluon emissions from heavy quarks. In this Letter, the first direct experimental constraint on the charm-quark splitting function is presented, obtained via the measurement of the groomed shared momentum fraction of the first splitting in charm jets, tagged by a reconstructed D^{0} meson...

Mesonephric-like adenocarcinoma is a rare neoplasm of the uterine corpus and ovary. Unlike prototypical mesonephric adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix, which is considered of Wolffian origin, recent evidence suggests that mesonephric-like adenocarcinoma is a Mullerian tumor associated with endometriosis. We report here on a 48-year-old woman with a mixed carcinoma of the ovary that consisted of mesonephric-like adenocarcinoma, clear cell carcinoma, and endometrioid carcinoma, arising from an endometriotic cyst...

Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa is a genetic collagen disorder characterized by skin fragility that leads to generalized severe blistering, wounds, and scarring. In this report, we present a patient with a novel COL7A1 homozygous nonsense variant, c.793C>T p.(Gln265*). Although the parents were not consanguineous, both were heterozygous carriers of the variant. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array analysis revealed an isodisomy area on 3p22.1p21.1, encompassing COL7A1, suggesting that the variant originated from a common ancestor...

As industrial shochu yeast is a diploid strain, obtaining a strain with mutations in both allelic genes was considered difficult. We investigated a method for disrupting two copies of a homozygous gene with a single transformation. We designed a disruption cassette containing an intact LYS5 flanked by nonfunctional ura3 gene fragments divided into the 5'- and 3'-regions. These fragments had overlapping sequences that enabled LYS5 removal as well as URA3 regeneration through loop-out. Furthermore, both ends of the disruption cassette had an additional repeat sequence that allowed the cassette to be removed from the chromosome through loop-out...

BACKGROUND: Currently, only limited knowledge is available regarding the phenotypic association between fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3) alterations and the tumor microenvironment (TME) in bladder cancer (BLCA). METHODS: A multi-omics analysis on 389 BLCA and 35 adjacent normal tissues from a cohort of OMPU-NCC Consortium Japan was retrospectively performed by integrating the whole-exome and RNA-sequence dataset and clinicopathological record. A median follow-up duration of all BLCA cohort was 31 months...

A limited number of patients with lung squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) benefit clinically from molecular targeted drugs because of a lack of targetable driver alterations. We aimed to understand the prevalence and clinical significance of lysine-specific demethylase 5D (KDM5D) copy number loss in SCC and explore its potential as a predictive biomarker for ataxia-telangiectasia and Rad3-related (ATR) inhibitor treatment. We evaluated KDM5D copy number loss in 173 surgically resected SCCs from male patients using fluorescence in situ hybridization...
