The development of portable and cost-effective sensing system for Hg2+ quantitation is highly demanded for environmental monitoring. Herein, an on-site, rapid and portable smartphone readout device based Hg2+ sensing system integrating nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (NCDs) modified paper strip was proposed, and the physicochemical properties of NCDs were characterized by high resolution TEM, FTIR, UV-vis absorption spectrum and fluorescence spectral analysis. The modified paper strip was prepared via "ink-jet" printing technology and exhibits sensitive fluorescence response to Hg2+ with fluorescence color of bright blue (at the excitation/emission wavelength of 365/440 nm)...

Water disinfection is conventionally achieved by oxidation or irradiation, which is often associated with a high carbon footprint and the formation of toxic byproducts. Here, we describe a nano-structured material that is highly effective at killing bacteria in water through a hydrodynamic mechanism. The material consists of carbon-coated, sharp Cu(OH)2 nanowires grown on a copper foam substrate. We show that mild water flow (e.g. driven from a storage tank) can efficiently tear up bacteria through a high dispersion force between the nanotip surface and the cell envelope...

Nosema bombycis (Nb) is a pathogen causing pebrine in sericulture. Ultraviolet (UV) light exposure is a common physical disinfection method, but the mechanisms underlying UV-based disinfection have only been studied at the population level. In this study, changes in and germination of UV-irradiated spores were observed using Raman tweezers and phase-contrast imaging to evaluate the effects of UV radiation on Nb spores at the single-cell level. We found that irradiation caused the complete leakage of trehalose from individual spores...

MDCK is currently the main cell line used for influenza vaccine production in culture. Previous studies have reported that MDCK cells possess tumorigenic ability in nude mice. Although complete cell lysis can be ensured during vaccine production, host cell DNA released after cell lysis may still pose a risk for tumorigenesis. Greater caution is needed in the production of human vaccines; therefore, the use of gene editing to establish cells incapable of forming tumors may significantly improve the safety of influenza vaccines...

Influenza is an acute respiratory infectious disease caused by influenza virus that seriously endangers people's health. Influenza vaccination is the most effective means to prevent influenza virus infection and its serious complications. MDCK cells are considered to be superior to chicken embryos for the production of influenza vaccines, but the tumorigenicity of cells is a concern over the theoretical possibility of the risk of adverse events. The theoretical risks need to be adequately addressed if public confidence in programs of immunization are to be maintained...

In recent years, a series of persistent luminescence materials excitable by blue light have been developed and widely used in many fields such as optical information storage, AC-LEDs, anti-counterfeiting and bio-imaging. However, it is still a long-standing challenge to develop a superior red-emitting persistent phosphor that can be efficiently excited by blue light. In this work, a novel blue-light excited red-emitting persistent phosphor CaCd2 Ga2 Ge3 O12 :Pr3+ was successfully synthesized by using a solid-state method, showing excellent luminescence properties...

Cyclin-dependent kinase 4 (CDK4) and retinoblastoma protein (RB) are both important cell-cycle regulators that function in different scenarios. Here, we report that FERM domain-containing 8 (FRMD8) inhibits CDK4 activation and stabilizes RB, thereby causing cell-cycle arrest and inhibiting colorectal cancer (CRC) cell growth. FRMD8 interacts separately with CDK7 and CDK4, and it disrupts the interaction of CDK7 with CDK4, subsequently inhibiting CDK4 activation. FRMD8 competes with MDM2 to bind RB and attenuates MDM2-mediated RB degradation...

As the main source of energy for human beings, starch is widely present in people's daily diet. However, due to its high content of rapidly digestive starch, it can cause a rapid increase in blood glucose after consumption, which is harmful to the human body. In the current study, the complexes made from edible rose polyphenols (ERPs) and three starches (corn, potato and pea) with different typical crystalline were prepared separately by multi-frequency power ultrasound (MFPU). The MFPU includes single-frequency modes of 40, 60 kHz and dual-frequency of 40 and 60 kHz in sequential and simultaneous mode...

Environmental-friendly and low-cost catalysts for peracetic acid (PAA) activation are vital to promote their application for micropollutant degradation in water. In this study, powdered activated carbon (PAC) was reported to improve the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The improvement of SMX degradation in the PAC/PAA system was expected to be because of the PAA activation rather than the co-existing H2 O2 activation. Non-radical oxidation pathways, including the mediated electron-transfer process and singlet oxygen (1 O2 ), were evidenced to play the dominant roles in the degradation of micro-organic pollutants...

The results demonstrated that the attapulgite could effectively promote the development of V. spiralis and improve plant stress resistance by enhancing the activity of antioxidant enzymes. The 10% addition of attapulgite clay increased the biomass of V. spiralis by 27%∼174%, and the promoted rate of raw attapulgite clay was 2∼5 times of modified attapulgite clay...

To meet vaccine production demands, increasing attention has been placed on identifying methods to improve vaccine production efficiency. The use of suspended cells can greatly increase vaccine production. Suspension acclimation is a traditional method to convert adherent cells to suspension strains. Furthermore, as genetic engineering technology has developed, increasing attention has focused on the development of suspension cell lines using targeted genetic engineering techniques...

Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells are one of the main cell lines used for influenza vaccine production due to their high virus yield and low mutation resistance. We found that the expression level of TGM2 was significantly up-regulated in low tumorigenic MDCK cells...
