In seasonally frozen regions, the bearing capacity of soil decreases and gradually deteriorates after undergoing freeze-thaw cycles. To resolve this problem, based on the idea of frost-resistant filling materials, a filling scheme of expanded polystyrene (EPS) particles lightweight soil in cold regions was proposed. Unconfined compressive strength, direct shear, and micro-SEM tests were carried out to study the physical and mechanical properties of EPS particles lightweight soil under freeze-thaw cycles. The results indicate that the EPS particle lightweight soil has good frost resistance and can be used as frost-resistant filling material in cold regions...

The basal heave stability of supported excavations is an essential problem in geotechnical engineering. This paper considers the probabilistic analysis of basal heave stability of supported excavations with spatially random soils by employing the random adaptive finite element limit analysis and Monte Carlo simulations to simulate all possible outcomes under parametric uncertainty. The effect of soil strength variability is investigated for various parameters, including the width and depth of the excavation ratio, strength gradient factor, and vertical correlation length...

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of zoonotic infections following an animal exposure continues to be an important consideration for all patients, especially those within agricultural communities. Streptococcus equi subspecies equi (S. equi subsp. equi) is a bacteria known to cause a common infection called 'Strangles' in horses. This article highlights a new case of pneumonia and bacteremia in a patient caused by S. equi subsp. equi following strangles exposure in a horse. Rarely has there been reported horse to human transmission of subsp...

While there is a general sense that reservoirs can act as sentinels of climate change, their efficacy has not been thoroughly analyzed. Here multiple-proxy analyses including 210 Pb, grain size, heavy metals, magnetic parameters, and spheroidal carbonaceous particles (SCPs) were conducted for a sediment core from a typical subtropical reservoir in South China (Huangkeng Reservoir). 210 Pb dating revealed that the core spans from ~ 1964 to 2019, with the sedimentary rate increasing during recent years...

In areas with large differences between day and night temperature, the freeze-thaw cycle and frost heaving force in rock mass generate cracks within the rock, which seriously threatens the stability and safety of geotechnical engineering structures and surrounding buildings. This problem can be solved by developing a reasonable model that accurately represents the rock creep behavior. In this study, we developed a nonlinear viscoelastic-plastic creep damage model by introducing material parameters and a damage factor while connecting an elastomer, a viscosity elastomer, a Kelvin element, and a viscoelastic-plastic element in series...

Sulfate heave caused by salt swelling behavior poses a threat to engineering safety. The salt vertical distribution has a significant impact on the salt swelling behavior of sulfate-affected soils. A series of laboratory tests were conducted to explore the law of salt swelling and deformation of sulfate-affected soils under different salt vertical distributions. The results indicated that the salt swelling deformation mainly occurred in the initial rising and falling temperature stage. Residual accumulation formed as the salt swelling deformation increased over cyclic times...

In this study, a sump in the Xingdong coal mine (buried at a depth of over 1200 m) was used to analyze the surrounding rock's stability and control technology. Under the combined influences of various complex conditions, such as the burial depth of over 1200 m, ultra-high ground stress, and location under the goaf, the sump support became extremely difficult, severely restricting the efficient production of the mine. The overall pressure-relief mechanisms and degree of the sump surrounding the rock environment under the goaf were studied, and the rationality of the sump location was verified through numerical simulations and field tests...

Frost heave hazard is the uneven uplift of the ground surface due to the freezing of water and the expansion of ice bodies in soil, especially in seasonally frozen soil. First, this study quantified temporal and spatial variations of frozen soil, the active layer and frost heave in China in the 2010s. Subsequently, the study predicted the changes in the frozen soil, active layer, and frost heave for the 2030s and 2050s under the SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, and SSP5-8.5 climate scenarios. The permafrost will have degraded to seasonally frozen soil, and the seasonally frozen soil will have a reduced depth or even become non-frozen...

Euthanasia is not infrequent in the modern practice of medicine. Active euthanasia is legal in seven countries worldwide and passive euthanasia has recently been legalized in India by the Supreme Court. In India, physicians and nurses generally have a favorable attitude towards euthanasia but lack in adequate training to deal with such requests. The role of a psychiatrist is very important in evaluation of request for euthanasia on medical as well as psychiatric grounds. Among patients with end-stage medical illnesses who make a request for euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide, many may have underlying untreated depression...

Liraglutide is an anti-diabetic medication used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, and chronic weight management. It is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonist that helps reduce postprandial hyperglycemia for up to 24 h after administration. It stimulates endogenous insulin secretion according to glucose levels, and also delays gastric emptying and suppresses prandial glucagon secretion. Some of the common complications associated with liraglutide include hypoglycemia, headache, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting...

A transient two-dimensional acoustic boundary element solver is coupled to a potential flow boundary element solver via Powell's acoustic analogy to determine the acoustic emission of isolated hydrofoils performing biologically-inspired motions. The flow-acoustic boundary element framework is validated against experimental and asymptotic solutions for the noise produced by canonical vortex-body interactions. The numerical framework then characterizes the noise production of an oscillating foil, which is a simple representation of a fish caudal fin...

Seasonally frozen ground regions occupy approximately 55% of the exposed land surface in the Northern Hemisphere, and frost heave is the common global problem in seasonally frozen soil areas. Frost heave induces uneven deformation of ground and damages railways, road paving, and buildings. How to mitigate frost heave is the most important technical issue in this field that has provoked great interest. Here, using freezing experiments, we investigate the effect of anionic polyacrylamide (APAM) polymer on frost susceptible soil...

Considering that a jointed rock mass in a cold area is often affected by periodic freeze-thaw cycles and shear failure, definitions for the mesoscopic and macroscopic damage to a jointed rock mass under the coupling of freeze-thaw and shear are proposed, and the damage mechanism is verified according to experimental results. The results show that: (1) the jointed rock specimens increase macro-joints and meso-defects, the mechanical properties deteriorate significantly under freeze-thaw cycles, and the damage degree becomes more and more significant with the increases in freeze-thaw cycles and joint persistency...

Several kinematic configurations are explored, varying sequentially pitch and heave amplitude, Strouhal number and phase angle, in an attempt to determine the influence of each parameter on the propulsive performance. To optimize efficiency the angle of attack should assume the highest value that also avoids the arise of the leading edge vortex generated in the dynamic stall state...

With global warming, ice caps shrinking and glaciers retreat at high latitudes have attracted concern. To understand the response of glacier to environment and climate in modern high latitude ice-marginal environments, this paper investigated glacial sediments in the Ny-Ålesund region of the Arctic and clarified the response of polar environmental to global changes through geochemical characteristics of glacial sediments...

When attempting to land on a ship deck tossed by the sea, helicopter pilots must make sure that the helicopter can develop sufficient lift to be able to safely touchdown. This reminder of affordance theory led us to model and study the affordance of deck-landing-ability, which defines whether it is possible to land safely on a ship deck depending on the helicopter's available lift and the ship's deck heave movements. Two groups of participants with no piloting experience using a laptop helicopter simulator attempted to land either a low-lifter or a heavy-lifter helicopter on a virtual ship deck by either triggering a pre-programmed lift serving as the descent law if it was deemed possible to land, or aborting the deck-landing maneuver...
