In localities with combined sewer systems, combined sewer overflow (CSO) events frequently occur following high precipitation and can result in the release of untreated sewage and industrial wastewater into surface waters. We hypothesized that either direct contact with or proximity to aerosolized CSO effluent would increase the risk for childhood emergency department (ED) visits for asthma, gastrointestinal (GI) illnesses, and skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) in Cincinnati, OH, USA. ED visits for 2010-2014 due to GI diseases, asthma, and SSTIs were extracted from the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center electronic health records...

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Epidemiology of hospitalizations with infection among patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is unknown despite an increase in RA treatments that confer infection risk. METHODS: We examined National Inpatient Sample data from 1993-2013. We identified adults RA hospitalizations, defined by having ICD-9-CM codes (714.xx) in any secondary diagnosis field. We evaluated 5 infections as the primary diagnosis: pneumonia, sepsis, urinary tract infection (UTI), skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI), and opportunistic infections (OIs)...

During the 4-year surveillance period, there were 282,571 incident cases of skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI) among active component U.S. military members diagnosed in inpatient or outpatient settings, corresponding to an overall incidence of 558.2 per 10,000 person-years (p-yrs). An additional 10,904 cases occurred in theater of operations (460.0 per 10,000 p-yrs). Approximately half (49.4%) were classified as "other SSTI" (e.g., folliculitis, impetigo); 45.9% were cellulitis/abscess; 4.6% were carbuncles/furuncles; and 0...

Langerhans cell histiocytosis is a heterogeneous disease of unknown etiology characterized by proliferation of Langerhans cells. It is a rare disease. Bone involvement is common but vertebral disease is rare. We present a 4 year old patient with abdominal pain and neurologic symptoms. Magnetic resonance showed vertebra plana in D9 with involvement of paravertebral soft tissues. The child underwent surgery for decompression and biopsy. Biopsy confirmed Langerhans cell histiocytosis. She was treated with vinblastine and prednisone during 6 months following LCH-III with complete recovery of neurologic symptoms...

OBJECTIVES: Soft tissue abscesses are common in the pediatric emergency department (ED). Ultrasound (US) can be used to both diagnose soft tissue abscesses as well as guide drainage. We hypothesized that clinical failure rates would be less in pediatric patients with suspected skin abscesses when evaluated with US. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of suspected pediatric skin abscesses at 4 EDs over a 22-month period. Cases were identified through electronic medical record descriptions, discharge diagnoses, and US database records...

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has been shown to be an effective treatment for soft tissue lesions and also benign bone tumors, especially osteoid osteoma. There are limited data regarding this technique in other bone tumors, specifically larger and more aggressive ones. PURPOSES: To describe the use of RFA as a definitive treatment and an alternative to traditional open surgery for the treatment of chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF), a benign but locally aggressive bone tumor...

Owing to its abundance on earth and its multiple uses by humans, lead (Pb) is a major toxicant that has threatened human health for millennia and continues to do so. There is no safe level of exposure, necessitating a nuanced approach to its control in the food we consume, the water we drink, and the air we breathe. Turnover in soft tissues is within days. In contrast, lead accumulates in bone and turns over with a half-life of about 30 years, though it can be mobilized from bone under physiological and pathophysiological conditions of bone resorption...

PTEN pseudogene (PTENP1) has a tumor suppressive role in multiple cancers. However, its involvement in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains largely unknown. In this study, we set out to identify the role of PTENP1 in the development of ESCC. Gene Expression Omnibus database was employed to investigate the expression of PTENP1 in ESCC. sRNA target Database(StarBase v2.0) was used to query the downstream of PTENP1. Next, both in vitro and in vivo experiments were employed to explore the function...

Minimally invasive aesthetic and cosmetic procedures have increased in popularity. Injectable dermal fillers provide soft tissue augmentation, improve facial rejuvenation and wrinkles, and correct tissue defects. To investigate the use of adipose‑derived stem cells integrated with a hyaluronic acid based gel as a dermal filler, the present study used cytotoxicity studies, proliferation studies, adipogenic and osteogenic differentiation, apoptosis assays and scanning electron microscopy. Although hyaluronic acid induced low levels of apoptosis in adipose‑derived stem cells, its significantly promoted proliferation of adipose‑derived stem cells...

Adipose tissue engraftment has become a well-established therapy in plastic and reconstructive surgery used to restore age-related or injury-related soft tissue loss. However, the unpredictable absorption rates limit its further application. Some clinicians have noted that more optimal aesthetic results are achieved when botulinum toxin A (BoNTA) is applied prior to adipose tissue grafting. In the present study, we transplanted allogeneic adipose tissue treated with or without BoNTA in SD rats in vivo. We subsequently evaluated the survival rate (weight, volume, apoptosis and cellular integrity) and revascularization of the adipose tissue...

We present the particular clinical and histological features of a metastatic high-grade myxofibrosarcoma (MFS) of the left buttock in a 77-year-old male patient. The tumor was biopsied and surgically removed in order to increase the patient's comfort, due to its increased size and aggressive clinical behavior. Computed tomography (CT) revealed metastases in the pleura and mediastinal lymph nodes, so limb-sparing tumor excision followed by palliative care was the best practice for the patient until the fatal outcome...

The loss of upper front dental elements causes functional and psychosocial problems to the affected individuals. In this case report, the treatment planning considered hard and soft tissue loss for a complex fixed partial denture (FPD) rehabilitation. The six-element, all-ceramic FPD was manufactured using a computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing system with zirconia framework, veneered with leucite-reinforced ceramic. Ceramic artificial gum was also produced to guarantee tooth-facial proportions as well as lip support, promoting both esthetics and phonetics...

Tumor resection causes damage in the head and neck which creates problems in swallowing, chewing, articulation, and vision, all of which seriously affect patients' quality of life. In this work, we evaluated the application of a free medial tibial flap in reconstruction of head and neck defects after tumor resection. We discussed the anatomy, surgical technique, and the advantages and disadvantages of the flap. We found several benefits for the flap, such as, it is especially effective for the defects that require thin-layer epithelium to cover or the separated soft tissue defect; a two-team approach can be used because the donor site is far away from the head and neck; and the flap is easy to integrate because of the subcutaneous fat layer of the free medial tibial flap is thin and the flap is soft...

Here, we present a hybrid approach for simulating an edge illumination X-ray phase-contrast imaging (EIXPCi) set-up using graphics processor units (GPU) with a high degree of accuracy. In this study, the applicability of pixel, mesh and non-uniform rational B-splines (NURBS) objects to carry out realistic maps of X-ray phase-contrast distribution at a human scale is accounted for by using numerical anthropomorphic phantoms and a very fast and robust simulation framework which integrates total interaction probabilities along selected X-ray paths...

BACKGROUND: Open fractures of the lower limb represent a complex and varied array of injuries. The BOAST 4 document produced by BAPRAS and the BOA provides standards on how to manage these patients, and NICE have recently produced additional guidance. We aimed to assess concordance with these standards in a large cohort representative of UK orthoplastic centres. METHODS: Patients admitted to the orthoplastic units at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and Royal Stoke University Hospital with open lower limb fractures between 2009 and 2014 were included...

Performing rhinoplasty using filler injections, which improve facial wrinkles or soft tissues, is relatively inexpensive. However, intravascular filler injections can cause severe complications, such as skin necrosis and visual loss. We describe a case of blepharoptosis and skin necrosis caused by augmentation rhinoplasty and we discuss the patient's clinical progress. We describe the case of a 25-year-old female patient who experienced severe pain, blepharoptosis, and decreased visual acuity immediately after receiving a filler injection...
