The objective of the present work was to study the morphometric characteristics of the main structural components of renal nephrons in the white rats with the experimentally induced acute and chronic alcohol intoxication. We undertook the morphometric examination of the structural elements of rat kidneys with the subsequent statistical analysis of the data obtained. The results of the study give evidence of the toxic action of ethanol on all structural components of the nephron in the case of both acute and chronic alcohol intoxication...

The principal characteristics and results of experimental studies on the problem of acute and chronic alcohol intoxication are presented. The mechanisms of toxic action of ethanol and acetaldehyde are considered with special reference to the comprehensive qualitative estimation of these toxicants and their pathomorphological effects in the target organs. The influence of ethanol-oxidizing enzyme systems in the brain on the development of alcohol tolerance is illustrated. The mechanisms of hormonal regulation via the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in the case of exogenous alcoholemia are considered...

There is no real possibility for detail knowledge of postmortal changes of blood alcohol concentration in the near future, so that it is necessary to comment alcoholaemia with special aspect on empirical practice. Potential use of alternative (more resistant to putrefaction) body fluid or tissue can help to distinguish ratio of endogenous and exogenous ethanol. It seems that using of vitreous (eventually urine) is the best way to avoid desinterpretation mistakes of alcoholemia in cadavers. In cases where these fluids are missing we are not able to comment alcoholaemia of saprogenic blood...

This study included 660 victims injured due to high fall. All cases are with injuries caused by the free-fall model of high fall. The range of the heights was from 0 to 70 m. The sample was divided into three groups of growing height: low falls up to 7 m, high falls from 7 to 30 m, and very high falls above 30 m. Statistical analysis was performed using two way ANOVA according to Scheirer-Ray-Hare in complete uneven block. Males were 71% (469), females 29% (191). In the analyzed sample, apart from the height of fall, the number of accidents is about 44% (290 cases) and suicides about 56% (370 cases)...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Serum gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase level is often increased in patients with chronic hepatitis C, and we aimed to identify factors associated with this phenomenon in patients completely abstinent from alcohol (teetotaller). PATIENTS AND METHODS: 71 teetotaller patients have been identified by personal history, questioning of relatives, CAGE questionnaire administration and unscheduled alcoholemia measurements. RESULTS: 39 patients (55%) had elevated (>50IU/L) gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase level...

OBJECTIVE: Road injuries are the leading injury-related cause of death among people aged 15-44. A clear dose-effect relationship has been demonstrated for drug and alcohol use and road traffic accidents. The objective of our study was to estimate the prevalence of drug and/or alcohol use in subjects admitted for road traffic accidents to an Emergency Department. METHODS: In this study, conducted between January and April 2006, 100 patients of both sexes (age 18-65) examined after road traffic accidents were consecutively enrolled...

Our previous studies demonstrated the usefulness of screening determinations of acetone as an initial diagnostic criterion in deaths due to hypothermia, alcoholic ketoacidosis, diabetes mellitus, starvation and some poisonings. In alcoholemia, particularly in cases of prolonged ethanol consumption, the above-mentioned conditions may not result in acetonemia, despite marked concentrations of beta-hydroxybutyrate acid (beta-HBA). Therefore, for the purpose of the present study, the method of beta-HBA determination was modified using GC-MS-EI and applied to analyze 47 autopsy blood samples of individuals who died suddenly due to unknown causes...

BACKGROUND: Alpha-glutathione S-transferases (alpha-GST) are the ''basic'' class of a large family of enzymes, ubiquitarly distributed in the cells, particularly in the hepatocytes. Their principal biological function is the detoxification of the cells by conjugating glutathione with various electrophiles and hydroperoxides. METHODS: We evaluated plasma alpha-GST in comparison to aminotransferase values (ALT) in 234 patients: 18 healthy volunteers, 51 chronic alcohol abusers with (22) or without (29) chronic liver damage and 165 with chronic HCV infection (32 ''apparently'' healthy carriers of HCV infection, 88 with a biopsy-proven chronic hepatitis (CH), 48 treated with interferon, 15 with well compensated and 12 with decompensated liver cirrhosis (LC) and 18 with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)...

Complex morphological-and-histological examinations of the adrenal glands were performed on actual forensic-medical samples in acute alcoholic intoxication (AAI), i.e. 107 death cases of men and women, aged 17 to 60, due to mechanical trauma, lethal ethanol intoxication and somatic complications of chronic alcoholism. A differentiated distribution of ethanol-oxidizing enzymes was defined, i.e. of alcohol-dehydrogenase and acetyl-dehydrogenase in the structural-and-functional zones of the adrenal cortex and medullary substance...
