Our aim in this Journal of Dairy Science centennial review is to describe the evolution of focus on metabolic indicators, from discovery and description to evaluation at the individual cow and subsequently herd levels, over the past 100 yr. The brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), Halyomorpha halys (Stål), is an invasive pentatomid introduced from Asia into the United States, Canada, multiple European countries, and Chile. In 2010, BMSB populations in the mid-Atlantic United States reached outbreak levels and subsequent feeding severely damaged tree fruit as well as other crops. Significant nuisance issues from adults overwintering inside homes were common. Alport syndrome-diffuse leiomyomatosis (AS-DL, OMIM: 308940) is a rare variant of the X-linked Alport syndrome that shows overgrowth of visceral smooth muscles in the gastrointestinal, respiratory and female reproductive tracts in addition to renal symptoms. AS-DL results from deletions that encompass the 5' ends of the COL4A5 and COL4A6 genes, but deletion breakpoints between COL4A5 and COL4A6 have been determined in only four cases.
