Pathogenic bacteria, including drug-resistant variants such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), can cause severe infections in the human body. Early detection of MRSA is essential for clinical diagnosis and proper treatment, considering the distinct therapeutic strategies for methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) and MRSA infections. However, the similarities between MRSA and MSSA properties present a challenge in promptly and accurately distinguishing between them. This work introduces an approach to differentiate MRSA from MSSA utilizing matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) in conjunction with a neural network-based classification model...

The number of applications of self-assembled deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) origami nanoparticles (DNA NPs) has increased drastically, following the development of a variety of single-stranded template DNA (ssDNA) that can serve as the scaffold strand. In addition to viral genomes, such as M13 bacteriophage and lambda DNAs, enzymatically produced ssDNA from various template sources is rapidly gaining traction and being applied as the scaffold for DNA NP preparation. However, separating fully formed DNA NPs that have custom scaffolds from crude assembly mixes is often a multistep process of first separating the ssDNA scaffold from its enzymatic amplification process and then isolating the assembled DNA NPs from excess precursor strands...

INTRODUCTION: Axonal plasticity is strongly related to neuronal development as well as regeneration. It was recently demonstrated that active mechanical tension, intended as an extrinsic factor, is a valid contribution to the modulation of axonal plasticity. METHODS: In previous publications, our team validated a the "nano-pulling" method used to apply mechanical forces to developing axons of isolated primary neurons using magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) actuated by static magnetic fields...

BACKGROUND: Obesity is one of the most prevalent and perilous health affairs. Male obesity-associated secondary hypogonadism (MOSH) is one of many of its complexities, which is mounting in parallel with the aggravation of obesity. Magnetic nanoparticles seem to be an advanced favorable trend in multiple biomedical fields. AIM: In this study, we explore the therapeutic effects of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) coated with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) on an obese male rat model with MOSH syndrome, comparing their impacts with a well-known anti-obesity medication (Orlistat)...

Although magnetic nanoparticles demonstrate significant potential as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents, their negative contrasts, liver accumulation, and limited excretion hinder their application. Herein, we developed ultrasmall Mn-doped iron oxide nanoparticles (UMIOs) with distinct advantages as T 1 MRI contrast agents. Exceptionally small particle sizes ( ca. 2 nm) and magnetization values (5 emu gMn+Fe -1 ) of UMIOs provided optimal T 1 contrast effects with an ideally low r 2 / r 1 value of ∼1...

Many technical and biomedical applications of magnetic nanoparticles rely on their response to time-varying magnetic fields. While well-established models exist for either immobile or thermally blocked nanoparticles, the intermediate regime where Brownian as well as Néel relaxation occur at the same time is less well explored. Here, we use an efficient model that allows us to study the nonlinear dynamics of individual magnetic nanoparticles in response to different time-varying magnetic fields over a broad range of field parameters, taking into account both relaxation mechanisms...

Magnetic propulsion of nano-/micro-robots is an effective way to treat implant-associated infections by physically destroying biofilm structures to enhance antibiotic killing. However, it is hard to precisely control the propulsion in vivo . Magnetic-nanoparticle coating that can be magnetically pulled off does not need precise control, but the requirement of adhesion stability on an implant surface restricts its magnetic responsiveness. Moreover, whether the coating has been fully pulled-off or not is hard to ensure in real-time in vivo ...

Mycotoxins, harmful compounds produced by fungal pathogens, pose a severe threat to food safety and consumer health. Some commonly produced mycotoxins such as aflatoxins, ochratoxin A, fumonisins, trichothecenes, zearalenone, and patulin have serious health implications in humans and animals. Mycotoxin contamination is particularly concerning in regions heavily reliant on staple foods like grains, cereals, and nuts. Preventing mycotoxin contamination is crucial for a sustainable food supply. Chromatographic methods like thin layer chromatography (TLC), gas chromatography (GC), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and liquid chromatography coupled with a mass spectrometer (LC/MS), are commonly used to detect mycotoxins; however, there is a need for on-site, rapid, and cost-effective detection methods...
