INTRODUCTION: Empirical studies have demonstrated the role that attentional bias, the mutual excitatory relationship between attentional bias and craving, and mentalizing play in problem gambling. Although problem gambling rates among older-aged adults have steadily increased in recent years, research studies among this cohort are scarce. The present study is the first to empirically investigate attentional bias, as well as the joint role of attentional bias, craving, and mentalizing among older-aged gamblers...

BACKGROUND: Olfactory dysfunction is a non-motor symptom and an important biomarker of Parkinson's disease (PD) because of its high prevalence (> 90%). Whether hyposmia correlates with motor symptoms is unclear. In the present study, we aim to investigate the relationship between olfactory impairment with both motor and non-motor features and disease variables (disease duration, stage, and severity). METHODS: One-hundred fifty-four PD patients were evaluated...

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) represents an emerging strategy to treat various malignancies, including colorectal cancer (CC), the third most common cancer type. This work presents an engineered M13 phage retargeted towards CC cells through pentavalent display of a disulfide-constrained peptide nonamer. The M13CC nanovector was conjugated with the photosensitizer Rose Bengal (RB), and the photodynamic anticancer effects of the resulting M13CC -RB bioconjugate were investigated on CC cells. We show that upon irradiation M13CC -RB is able to impair CC cell viability, and that this effect depends on i) photosensitizer concentration and ii) targeting efficiency towards CC cell lines, proving the specificity of the vector compared to unmodified M13 phage...

BACKGROUND: Atrial high-rate episodes (AHRE) are frequent in patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices. A decrease in device-detected P-wave amplitude may be an indicator of periods of increased risk of AHRE. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between P-wave amplitude and AHRE incidence. METHODS: Remote monitoring data from 2,579 patients with no history of atrial fibrillation (23% pacemakers, 77% implantable cardioverter-defibrillators [ICDs] of which 40% providing cardiac resynchronization therapy [CRT]) were used to calculate the mean P-wave amplitude during 1 month after implantation...

As an auxiliary method in the process of human identification, forensic facial approximation (FFA) is an important tool for identifying unknown human bodies whose remains do not present the necessary traceability to any antemortem data collection. Specific characteristics are necessary when addressing children aged between 6 and 10 years, who have little sexual differentiation and a mixed dentition. Due to the chronology of eruption of the permanent second molars in this population, it is not possible to measure facial soft-tissue thickness (FSTT) from specific landmarks such as supra and infra M2...

OBJECTIVES: Vasoactive drugs have exhibited clinical efficacy in addressing pulmonary arterial hypertension, manifesting a significant reduction in morbidity and mortality. Pulmonary hypertension may complicate advanced interstitial lung disease (PH-ILD) and is associated with high rates of disability, hospitalisation due to cardiac and respiratory illnesses, and mortality. Prior management hinged on treating the underlying lung disease and comorbidities. However, the INCREASE trial of inhaled treprostinil in PH-ILD has demonstrated that PH-ILD can be effectively treated with vasoactive drugs...

Despite aggressive multimodal treatment, the outcome of pediatric patients affected by high-risk (HR) neuroblastoma (NB) remains poor. The rational of use of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HCT) for NB was based on the possible graft versus tumor effect; however, toxicity represents a limitation to its efficacy. We sought to prospectively assess the feasibility and efficacy of allo-HCT using a reduced intensity conditioning regimen in pediatric patients with HR NB in a multicenter phase II trial...

BACKGROUND: a few pathologic and ultrastructural findings of monkeypox skin lesions are available in the literature. To integrate such evidence, we aimed to describe the pathologic features of monkeypox skin lesions and to show monkeypox virions by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). METHODS: we studied the cutaneous biopsies of three patients affected by monkeypox during the 2022 monkeypox outbreak. Skin biopsies have been collected only from body sites with a recent laboratory-confirmed mpox virus infection, defined by a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) positive result in specimens taken through skin swabs...

Brain charts for the human lifespan have been recently proposed to build dynamic models of brain anatomy in normal aging and various neurological conditions. They offer new possibilities to quantify neuroanatomical changes from preclinical stages to death, where longitudinal MRI data are not available. In this study, we used brain charts to model the progression of brain atrophy in progressive supranuclear palsy-Richardson syndrome. We combined multiple datasets ( n = 8170 quality controlled MRI of healthy subjects from 22 cohorts covering the entire lifespan, and n = 62 MRI of progressive supranuclear palsy-Richardson syndrome patients from the Four Repeat Tauopathy Neuroimaging Initiative (4RTNI)) to extrapolate lifetime volumetric models of healthy and progressive supranuclear palsy-Richardson syndrome brain structures...

BACKGROUND: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) with biventricular pacing (BVP) is a well-established therapy in patients with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), heart failure, and left bundle branch (LBB) block. LBB area pacing (LBBAP) has recently been shown to be a feasible and effective alternative to BVP. Comparative data on the risk of complications between LBBAP and BVP among patients undergoing CRT are lacking. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the long-term risk of procedure-related complications between LBBAP and BVP in a cohort of patients undergoing CRT...

Renal involvement is very common in patients with HIV infection. The phenotype varies from the most frequently "collapsing" variant of focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) to "lupus-like HIV-immune complex kidney disease" (HIVICK). The latter is characterized by a histological picture that recalls lupus nephropathy. Through a clinical case, we underline the importance of urinary sediment analysis in patients with suspected glomerulopathy. Findings such as the characteristic cells that show the typical appearance of Herpes virus (HSV) infection or LE cells have significantly supported the diagnosis of HIVICK...

Anti-IgLON5 disease is a rare and likely underdiagnosed subtype of autoimmune encephalitis. The disease displays a heterogeneous phenotype that includes sleep, movement, and bulbar-associated dysfunction. Presence of IgLON5-antibodies in CSF/serum, together with a strong association with HLA-DRB1*10:01∼DQB1*05:01, support an autoimmune basis. In this study, a multicentric HLA study of 87 anti-IgLON5 patients revealed a stronger association with HLA-DQ than HLA-DR. Specifically, we identified a predisposing rank-wise association with HLA-DQA1*01:05∼DQB1*05:01, HLA-DQA1*01:01∼DQB1*05:01 and HLA-DQA1*01:04∼DQB1*05:03 in 85% of patients...

The advancement of anti-cancer therapies has markedly improved the survival rate of children with cancer, making them long-term childhood cancer survivors (CCS). Nevertheless, these treatments cause a low-grade inflammatory state, determining inflamm-aging and, thus, favoring the early onset of chronic diseases normally associated with old age. Identification of novel and safer therapeutic strategies is needed to counteract and prevent inflamm-aging. Macrophages are cells involved in immune and inflammatory responses, with a pivotal role in iron metabolism, which is related to inflammation...

This article examines the evolution of bariatric surgery, with a focus on emerging technologies such as robotics and laparoscopy. In the case of gastric bypass, no significant differences have emerged between the two techniques in terms of hospitalization duration, weight loss, weight regain, or 30-day mortality. Robotic surgery, while requiring more time in the operating room, has been associated with lower rates of bleeding, mortality, transfusions, and infections. In revisional bariatric surgery, the robotic approach has shown fewer complications, shorter hospital stays, and a reduced need for conversion to open surgery...
