Background: The anorectal anomalies consist in a complex group of birth defects. Laparoscopic-assisted anorectoplasty improved visualization of the rectal fistula and the ability to place the pull-through segment within the elevator muscle complex with minimal dissection. There is no consensus on how the fistula should be managed. Aim: To evaluate the laparoscopic-assisted anorectoplasty and the treatment of the rectal urinary fistula by a bipolar sealing device...

After cystectomy, the urine is eliminated by the uretra (orthotopic neobladder) or through a stoma. Orthotopic neobladder is done by priority when feasible. Practical aspects have to be managed very strictly by the urologist and the staff nurse. Side effects and complications are quite frequent (incontinence, retention, infection, diminished renal function, metabolic disorders, stoma complications) and need an adapted follow-up to propose adapted management if necessary.

Malignant tumours of the penis are a rare entity. They are mostly squamous cell carcinomas and arise from the glands or the coronal sulcus. Glans brachytherapy has been developed to avoid mutilating surgery and allow organ preservation. Indications of brachytherapy are tumours less than 4 cm with no invasion of the uretra or corpora cavernosa. Local control is equivalent after brachytherapy and surgery. This article describes the indications, the technique, outcome and toxicity of penile brachytherapy.

UNLABELLED: With the modern techniques, we can resolve almost the totallity of hypospadias. But there are patients with recurrent fistulas associated to uretral stenosis that can finish all the surgical possibilities. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective review. Lateral based flap uretroplasty consists in the exposition of the uretra, to reconstruct in one-stage the original neourethra with the lateral skin of the penis. RESULTS: From 2008, we have correct 5 patients with a mean age of 12,1 years (9-15) and a weight of 55,34 kg (22-98 kg)...

PURPOSE: To evaluate the usefulness of MRI to assess the anatomical and functional relationships between the transobturator male sling Advance(®) and the uretral sphincter, in patients treated for postprostatectomy urinary incontinence. PATIENTS: For 12 patients treated for postprostatectomy urinary incontinence using the transobturator male sling Advance(®), a pelvic real-time MRI was performed between 1 and 3 months postoperatively. A comparison between pre- and postoperative MRI was performed in eight patients...

Posterior urethral injuries may be associated with pelvic fractures, which are serious accidents that can be life-threatening, and invariably affect urinary and sexual function. Current strategy for treating complete rupture of the membranous urethra involves minimal cystotomy with emergency surgery within the first 10 days, this is later followed by what is considered to be the ideal solution, end-to-end urethral anastomosis using the transpubic approach. However, this anatomic reconstruction is hindered by the greatdifficulty of locating the distal portion of the uretra below the superior layer of the medial perineal aponeurosis...

The sub uretral slings (SUS) have supplanted all other techniques in the treatment of stress urinary incontinence in first-line both at ease, results, consequences and cost. However the results are comparable with the abdominal retropubic colposuspension. The elective indication for BSU is stress incontinence. In the mixed incontinence, the results are satisfactory and depend on the degree of urge incontinence. The intrinsic sphincter deficiency with mobile uretra can be used in indications laying BSU. Only a BMI ≥ 35 is a pejorative factor on the outcome of the SUS...

BACKGROUND: Sialyl Lewis x (SLeX), sialyl Lewis a (SLeA), Lewis Y (LeY) and the Thomsen-Friedenreich (TF) antigen are carbohydrate motifs that mediate the adhesion between tumour cells and the endothelium. These antigens are usually not expressed in non-malignant tissue. Overexpression of SLeX and SLeA is combined with poor prognosis and malignant relapse. In this study, we analysed the combined expression of SLeX, SLeA, LeY and TF in normal squamous epithelium tissue of the penis shaft, glans and foreskin and in addition of the vagina and vulva...

The Remeex system it's a sling with regulable tension created for the surgical correction of the female urinary incontinente. The system contains a varitensor central part of the protesis that regulates the tension of the uretra. The screwdriver that acts against the varitensor to the modify the tension under the uretra in the postop inmediately or time after also. We present a clinic case of a patient with diagnostic of urinary stress incontinence and the surgical treatment with advantages against others kind of systems used for incontinence treatment at this time...

INTRODUCTION: Cloaca is a defect in which the rectum, the vagina and the uretra are fused in a single common channel. Cloaca is the most complex anorectal malformation. The surgical management depends on the length of the common channel and the associated defects. METHODS: Since 1993 we have treated 9 cases of cloacas. The average age at surgery was 12 months. Five patients had associated vertebral defects, six had urological defects and six had vaginal defects...

Megalourethra is an infrequent congenital malformation that compromises the penile uretra. It is the consequence of a deficient fusion of the ventral mesenchymal elements of the penis that generates the masive urethral dilatation that characterizes this pathology. Here we present a review of the literature available on megalourethra and the case of a newborn with this illness. We present it's surgical resolution with a special emphasis on the surgical technique.

BACKGROUND: Sling surgery is considered to be the gold standard for treatment of female stress urinary incontinence resulting from sphincter deficiency. A century of experience is reviewed and evolving new concepts and techniques are presented. METHODS: This article reviews 34 retrospective studies involving 2 967 interventions. RESULTS: and discussion. Sub urethral sling procedures have been reserved traditionally for the treatment of recurrent stress incontinence, autologous or heterologous slings are used and the success rate varies between 65 and 98%...

Severe type I congenital curvature of the penis is characterised by an almost transparent hypoplasia uretra. Treatment consists of resecetion of the dysplasic urethra and its replacement by tubular grafts of preputial or extragenital skin or of the vesical or buccal mucous membrane. We present our experience of four patient with type I congenital curvature of the penis which we treated with a simple surgical technique consisting of leaving the over-lying skin attached to the hypoplasia urethra and resecting the remaining fibrotic tissue which is connected to and retracts the skin and the cavernous bodies...

OBJECTIVE: We present the case of a fibroepithelial polyp from the uretra of a young female, analysing the factors that make this an interesting case. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A case-report of a fibrous polyp from the urethra of a young female, an analysis of its differential diagnosis and a review of the literature. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The fibrous polyp of the urethra (fibroepithelual polyp, simple polyp, pedunculated polyp) is a rare benign epithelial tumour, more frequently encountered in males and in the posterior urethra...

Percutaneous endopyelotomy, introduced over 15 years ago, is a well-established alternative to open operative pyeloplasty for management of ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction. Although several variations of the technique have been described, the goal in all cases is to develop a full thickness incision though the obstructing proximal uretra that extends out to the peripyeloureteral fat and heals over an internal stent. Though a percutaneous endopyelotomy can be considered for almost any patient with primary or secondary UPJ obstruction, it is particularly valuable in the setting of upper tract stones that can then be managed simultaneously...

BACKGROUND: The Tension-free Vaginal Tape (TVT) represents the most recent technique for the treatment of genuine stress urinary incontinence (GSUI). The various number of surgical procedures proposed for the treatment of GSI very often do not lead to a complete remission of this pathology. The data from the literature show how TVT is a effective procedure for the treatment of female urinary incontinence. METHODS: Twenty-nine women with diagnosis of urinary incontinence underwent application of polypropilene band (TVT: tension-free vaginal tape) underneath the uretra, in order to treat this disorder...

The introduction on spiral computed tomography (spiral CT) has vastly enriched the methodological diversity of computer-tomographic scans. It allows for the recording of different perfusion or excretion stages of the kidney parenchyma of the urine draining paths by carrying out long-distance, phase-identical multiple examinations of the retroperitoneum. The description of the findings which are characterized by their local and contrasts behavior is possible. The following report describes the indications and technological process of kidney spiral CT using kidney-typical intravenous contrast media...

In the last twenty years 55 children with ureteral ectopia were diagnosed and treated in our Hospital. Thirty seven of them were female (67.3%) and they presented the urinary tract infection like the most frequent symptomatology. Seven children were diagnosed during the first days after being born because the detection of hydronephrosis in the antenatal ultrasound; 36 were associated with complete ureteric duplication (65.4%) and the other 19 with single system (34.6%). Congenital abnormalities associated were seen in 14 patients with more frequency in those which presented single-system ectopic ureter (12/14), being the imperforate anus and the kidney agenesia those the most incidence...

The prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis antigen in patients visiting the University Hospital of Ioannina, North-western Greece during 1991-1993 is surveyed. Six hundred and twenty two (622) samples (scrapings from the cervix, uretra and conjunctiva) were examined for the detenction of C. trachomatis antigen using the direct immunofluorescence technique (DIF). From the 662 samples examined by DIF, 579 were found negative (93%) and 43 positive (7%).

Obstetrical vesico-vaginal fistulas in Africa are very frequent and are correlated with the insufficiency or even the lack of health structures and sanitary conditions. They follow up a dystocic parturition, and their prevention requires a correct surveillance of pregnancy and parturition. Their pathogenesis consists in a durable compression of the pelvic cavity by the foetal head, inducing ischemia and later on necrosis. Their difficult treatment is based on clinical inspection which makes possible to distinguish several pathological types of fistulas...
