To investigate the efficacy of cervical pessary placement in preventing preterm birth and perinatal morbidity and mortality in asymptomatic women with a singleton pregnancy and a short cervix, we searched literature in relevant databases. The meta-analysis of the 3 included trials (1412 women) showed cervical pessary placement did not reduce the risk of spontaneous preterm birth <34 weeks in these women (risk ratio (RR), 0.71; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.21-2.43, P = 0.59; I(2) = 90%). The sensitivity analyses by excluding one trial at one time showed the same results...

BACKGROUND: Cesarean delivery (CD) rates have risen globally with nearly 50% of the non-indicated CDs worldwide in China and Brazil. In China's One Child Policy era (1979-2015) most deliveries were women having their only child. Family size is a major determinant of the safety of medically non-indicated CD or CD on maternal request. The goal of this study is to document CD rates, indications, and analyze the relative safety of non-indicated CD compared to SVD and intrapartum CD. METHODS: Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses of the association between mode of delivery and short-term maternal and perinatal outcomes were performed on a cross-section of all deliveries at 39 hospitals in 14 provinces of China in 2011, presented as adjusted odds ratio (aOR), 99% confidence intervals (CI)...

Synthetic glucocorticoids (GCs) are widely used in the variety of dosages for treatment of premature infants with chronic lung disease, respiratory distress syndrome, allergies, asthma, and other inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. Yet, adverse effects such as glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis and growth retardation are recognized. Conversely, 2-oxoglutarate (2-Ox), a precursor of glutamine, glutamate, and collagen amino acids, exerts protective effects on bone development. Our aim was to elucidate the effect of dietary administered 2-Ox on bone loss caused by neonatal treatment with clinically relevant maximal therapeutic dexamethasone (Dex) dose...

Background. Noninvasive respiratory support is considered the optimal method of providing assistance to preterm babies with breathing problems, including nasal continuous positive airway pressure (NCPAP) and humidified high flow nasal cannula (HHHFNC). The evidence of the efficacy and safety of HHHFNC used as the primary respiratory support for respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is insufficient in low- and middle-income countries. Objective. To investigate the effect of heated humidified high flow nasal cannula on neonatal respiratory distress syndrome compared with nasal continuous positive airway pressure...

Severe gastrointestinal bleeding in newborn period is a serious but uncommon phenomenon that has a broad differential diagnosis. Primary duodenal ulcers are rare in children but stress induced ulceration in stomach occurs more often in neonatal period due to birth asphyxia, prolonged labour, cesarean deliveries, instrumentations, respiratory distress syndrome and sepsis. These present as acute onset of gastrointestinal bleeding commonly as altered gastric aspirate, hematemesis or malena. We report a case of a neonate with stress induced gastric bleeding following birth asphyxia who presented with massive gastrointestinal bleed manifesting as hematemesis and massive rectal bleeding...
