Liver abscess causing and presenting as acute liver failure is rare; it does not result in hepatitis as it causes focal hepatic necrosis. With drainage of pus, recovery is the rule. However, a child having multiple abscesses may present with acute fulminant liver failure.

Pien Tze Huang (PZH), a class I nationally protected traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has been used to treat liver diseases such as hepatitis; however, the effect of PZH on the progression of sepsis is unknown. Here, we reported that PZH attenuated lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced sepsis in mice and reduced LPS-induced production of proinflammatory cytokines in macrophages by inhibiting the activation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signalling. Mechanistically, PZH stimulated signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) phosphorylation to induce the expression of A20, which could inhibit the activation of NF-κB and MAPK signalling...

Acute viral hepatitis E (HEV) is the most common form of acute viral hepatitis in India. It is associated with self-limiting disease in most cases. However, the chronic form of HEV is also being increasingly recognized. Other viral infections like the hepatitis A virus (HAV) have been implicated in inciting autoimmune hepatitis. HEV infection has been associated with the formation of circulating liver-directed autoantibodies, however autoimmune liver disease following acute HEV infection has been rarely reported...

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the correlation of fibrosis severity in liver biopsies, the gold standard for the diagnosis of patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB), using noninvasive methods such as the aspartate aminotransferase (AST)-to-platelet ratio index (APRI) and fibrosis-4 score (FIB-4). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included patients who were followed and treated for CHB in 2018-2023. Biochemical markers and liver biopsy findings of the cases were retrospectively, and their correlations with APRI and FIB-4, which are noninvasive scores, were compared...

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is the leading cause of chronic liver disease worldwide. HBV-infected patients are at a lifetime risk of developing liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Today, pegylated interferon (Peg-IFN) and nucleos(t)ide analogs (NAs) are used in the treatment of patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). Both treatment options have limitations. Despite effective viral suppression, NAs have little effect on covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA), the stable episomal form of the HBV genome in hepatocytes...

INTRODUCTION: Treatment for recurrent ovarian clear cell carcinoma (OCCC) is clinically challenging as response rates to traditional chemotherapy are low, and recurrence rates are high. Immunotherapy has shown promise for this ovarian cancer (OC) subtype, and tumor molecular testing allows for the identification of a patient population that might benefit most from this treatment. We describe the clinical course and somatic genomic testing of 4 patients who received pembrolizumab for recurrent OCCC concurrent with a combination of bevacizumab and/or cyclophosphamide...

BACKGROUND: People who inject drugs (PWID) are a priority population in HCV elimination programming. Overcoming sex and gender disparities in HCV risk, prevention, and the cascade of care is likely to be important to achieving this goal, but these have not yet been comprehensively reviewed. METHODS: Systematic review and meta-analysis. We searched Pubmed, EMBASE and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews 1 January 2012-22 January 2024 for studies of any design reporting sex or gender differences among PWID in at least one of: sharing of needles and/or syringes, incarceration history, injection while incarcerated, participation in opioid agonist treatment or needle and syringe programs, HCV testing, spontaneous HCV clearance, direct-acting antiviral (DAA) treatment initiation or completion, and sustained virological response (SVR)...

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a major cause of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, with HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) being a crucial marker in the clinical detection of HBV. Due to the significant harm and ease of transmission associated with HBV, HBsAg testing has become an essential part of preoperative assessments, particularly for emergency surgeries where healthcare professionals face exposure risks. Therefore, a timely and accurate detection method for HBsAg is urgently needed. In this study, a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor with a sandwich structure was developed for HBsAg detection...

Tezepelumab is a human monoclonal antibody that blocks the activity of thymic stromal lymphopoietin. This analysis assessed the suitability of a fixed-dose regimen of tezepelumab 210 mg every 4 weeks (Q4W) in adults and adolescents with severe, uncontrolled asthma. A population pharmacokinetic model was developed using data from 1368 patients with asthma or healthy participants enrolled in 8 clinical studies (phases 1-3). Tezepelumab exposure-efficacy relationships were analyzed in the phase 3 NAVIGATOR study (NCT03347279), using asthma exacerbation rates over 52 weeks and changes in pre-bronchodilator forced expiratory volume in 1 s at week 52...
