OBJECTIVE: Christmas holidays can impact weight and glycemic control in type 2 diabetes, but their effect on type 1 diabetes (T1D) remains understudied. This study assessed how Christmas holidays affect individuals with T1D who use flash continuous glucose monitoring systems. METHODS: This retrospective study involved 812 adults diagnosed with T1D recruited from 3 hospitals. Clinical, anthropometric, and socioeconomic data were collected. Glucose metrics from 14 days before January 1st, and before December 1st and February 1st as control periods, were recorded...

Constructed treatment wetlands are commonly used to enhance surface water nutrient removal following traditional wastewater treatment. However, the constant inflow may necessitate continuous wetland inundation, leading to persistent anaerobic conditions and the accumulation of organic matter (OM) as suspended detrital flocculent (floc) and soil OM. This study investigated if temporary water level draw-down (WLDD) could promote OM consolidation and oxidation without impacting nutrient removal efficiency. A large-scale, 2-y, before-after-control-impact field experiment at the Orlando Easterly Wetland (Christmas, FL, USA) was complemented by an intact soil core laboratory experiment with varied WLDD regimes...

The entomopathogenic fungus Conoideocrella luteorostrata has recently been implicated in natural epizootics among exotic elongate hemlock scale (EHS) insects in Christmas tree farms in the eastern United States. Since 1913, C. luteorostrata has been reported from various plant feeding Hemiptera in the southeastern United States, but comprehensive morphological and phylogenetic studies of U.S. populations are lacking. The recovery of multiple strains of C. luteorostrata from mycosed EHS in North Carolina provided an opportunity to conduct pathogenicity assays and morphological and phylogenetic studies to investigate genus- and species-level boundaries among the Clavicipitaceae...

BACKGROUND: Postoperative scapular stress fractures (SSF) are a formidable problem after reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA). Less is known about patients who have these fractures preoperatively. The primary aim of this study was to examine postoperative satisfaction in patients undergoing primary RSA who have preoperative SSF and compared to a matched cohort without preoperative fracture. The secondary aim was to examine the differences in patient reported outcomes between and within study cohorts...

The yellow crazy ant, or the long-legged ant, Anoplolepis gracilipes (formerly Anoplolepis longipes ) - named so for its meandering movements when disturbed, possibly owing to its long legs and antennae - is globallywidespread and currently classified as one of '100 of the world's worst invasive species' (Lowe et al. 2000). This status is assigned to species that are non-native in a region and cause significant negative ecological and/or socioeconomic impacts, including declines in native biodiversity, changes in native ecosystem structure and function, and the breakdown of native biogeographic realms...

OBJECTIVE: We report a case of an accessory cavitated uterine mass (ACUM) in a patient with infertility and chronic pelvic pain. In addition, we summarize the literature to better characterize ACUM diagnosis and management. DESIGN: A comprehensive literature search using the PubMed database was performed through April 2023. Historical ACUM diagnostic criteria were applied as inclusion criteria. Descriptive statistics and statistical evaluation were reported. RESULTS: A 31-year-old nulligravid woman presented with chronic pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, primary infertility, and history of endometriosis...

Christmas trees are an economically and culturally important ornamental plant in North America. Many microorganisms are pathogens of firs cultivated as Christmas trees. Among those, Phytophthora causes millions of dollars in damage to plantations annually. In Canada, it is unknown which species are responsible for Phytophthora root rot (PRR) of cultivated Abies species. Between 2019 and 2021, soil and root samples were collected from 40 Christmas tree plantations in Québec province. We used soil baiting and direct isolation from unidentified root fragments to assess the diversity of culturable Phytophthora spp...

Genitourinary syndrome of menopause can have a profound impact on well-being, functioning, and quality of life in postmenopausal women. Treatment includes vaginal moisturizers and lubricants geared towards providing symptomatic relief; hormonal treatments which promote epithelial thickening and production of vaginal secretions; and pelvic floor physical therapy along with behavioral therapies that address pelvic floor hypertonicity and psychosocial factors...

BACKGROUND: Drinking on special occasions (e.g., Super Bowl, Christmas) often results in more alcohol consumed. Further, police often report higher levels of crime, such as assaults and domestic violence, on days of major sporting events (e.g., Super Bowl, World Cup). Yet, drinking behaviors of parents during special occasions or large sporting events have not been assessed for their effects on parenting behaviors. Here, we assess the relationship between drinking during the Super Bowl and on Valentine's Day to determine whether they differ...

Human leukocyte antigen-G (HLA-G) is classified as non-classical HLA, located in the short arm of chromosome 6 and composed of seven introns and eight exons. The HLA-G gene has a lower frequency polymorphism in the coding area and higher variability at the regulatory 5'- and 3'-untranslated regions linked to HLA-G microRNA regulation. HLA-G molecule is known to have an immunomodulatory and tolerogenic features role. In 199 Saudi individuals, we examined the association between plasma soluble HLA-G (sHLA-G) levels and eight polymorphic different sites, including 14 bp ins/del/+3003T-C/+3010C-G/+3027C-A/+3035C-T/+3142C-G/+3187A-G/+3196C-G single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in exon 8 in the HLA-G gene...
