COVID-19 has affected millions of people worldwide, causing illness and death, and disrupting daily life while imposing a significant social and economic burden. Vaccination is an important control measure that significantly reduces mortality if properly and efficiently distributed. In this work, an age-structured model of COVID-19 transmission, incorporating an unreported infectious compartment, is developed. Three age groups are considered: young (0-19 years), adult (20-64 years), and elderly (65+ years)...

A model of a multi-reservoir resource exchange intermediary also defined as a commercial engine is proposed according to analogies and similarities between thermodynamics and economics. The optimal configuration of a multi-reservoir commercial engine with a maximum profit output objective is determined by applying optimal control theory. The optimal configuration consists of two instantaneous constant commodity flux processes and two constant price processes, and the configuration is independent of a number of economic subsystems and commodity transfer law qualitatively...

In the context of SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, mathematical modelling has played a fundamental role for making forecasts, simulating scenarios and evaluating the impact of preventive political, social and pharmaceutical measures. Optimal control theory represents a useful mathematical tool to plan the vaccination campaign aimed at eradicating the pandemic as fast as possible. The aim of this work is to explore the optimal prioritisation order for planning vaccination campaigns able to achieve specific goals, as the reduction of the amount of infected, deceased and hospitalized in a given time frame, among age classes...

Epidemic diseases and media campaigns are closely associated with each other. Considering most epidemics have multiple pathogenic strains, in this paper, we take the lead in proposing two multi-strain SIS epidemic models in heterogeneous networks incorporating awareness programs due to media. For the first model, we assume that the transmission rates for strain 1 and strain 2 depend on the level of awareness campaigns. For the second one, we further suppose that awareness divides susceptible population into two different subclasses...

New stochastic and deterministic Hepatitis B epidemic models with general incidence are established to study the dynamics of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) epidemic transmission. Optimal control strategies are developed to control the spread of HBV in the population. In this regard, we first calculate the basic reproduction number and the equilibrium points of the deterministic Hepatitis B model. And then the local asymptotic stability at the equilibrium point is studied. Secondly, the basic reproduction number of the stochastic Hepatitis B model is calculated...

An online policy learning algorithm is used to solve the optimal control problem of the power battery state of charge (SOC) observer for the first time. The design of adaptive neural network (NN) optimal control is studied for the nonlinear power battery system based on a second-order (RC) equivalent circuit model. First, the unknown uncertainties of the system are approximated by NN, and a time-varying gain nonlinear state observer is designed to address the problem that the resistance capacitance voltage and SOC of the battery cannot be measured...

We combined an inverse engineering technique based on Lagrange mechanics and optimal control theory to design an optimal trajectory that can transport a cartpole in a fast and stable way. For classical control, we used the relative displacement between the ball and the trolley as the controller to study the anharmonic effect of the cartpole. Under this constraint, we used the time minimization principle in optimal control theory to find the optimal trajectory, and the solution of time minimization is the bang-bang form, which ensures that the pendulum is in a vertical upward position at the initial and the final moments and oscillates in a small angle range...

The effects of habitat heterogeneity on a diffusing population are investigated here. We formulate a reaction-diffusion system of partial differential equations to analyze the effect of resource allocation in an ecosystem with resource having its own dynamics in space and time. We show a priori estimates to prove the existence of state solutions given a control. We formulate an optimal control problem of our ecosystem model such that the abundance of a single species is maximized while minimizing the cost of inflow resource allocation...

Phase contrast velocimetry relies on bipolar gradients to establish a direct and linear relationship between the phase of the magnetic resonance signal, and the corresponding fluid motion. Despite its utility, several limitations and drawbacks have been reported, the most important being the extended echo time due to the encoding after the excitation. In this study, we elucidate a new approach based on optimal control theory that circumvents some of these disadvantages. An excitation pulse, termed FAUCET (flow analysis under controlled encoding transients), is designed to encode velocity into phase already during the radiofrequency excitation...

In this paper, we introduce the topological state derivative for general topological dilatations and explore its relation to standard optimal control theory. We show that for a class of partial differential equations, the shape-dependent state variable can be differentiated with respect to the topology, thus leading to a linearised system resembling those occurring in standard optimal control problems. However, a lot of care has to be taken when handling the regularity of the solutions of this linearised system...

It is critical to adjust aspects of the policy about non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) by searching for and implementing more effective ways. In the classical infectious disease compartment model, the parameters are fixed. In reality, the probability of virus transmission in the process of disease transmission depends on the concentration of virus in the environment, and the concentration depends on the proportion of patients in the environment. Therefore, the probability of virus transmission changes with time. Then how to fit the parameters and get the trend of the parameters changing with time is the key to predict the disease course with the model...

Nonlinear dynamical systems describe neural activity at various scales and are frequently used to study brain functions and the impact of external perturbations. Here, we explore methods from optimal control theory (OCT) to study efficient, stimulating "control" signals designed to make the neural activity match desired targets. Efficiency is quantified by a cost functional, which trades control strength against closeness to the target activity. Pontryagin's principle then enables to compute the cost-minimizing control signal...

We tailor the quantum statistics of a bosonic field to deterministically drive a quantum system into a target state. Experimentally accessible states of the field achieve good control of multilevel or multiqubit systems, notably also at coupling strengths beyond the rotating-wave approximation. This extends optimal control theory to the realm of fully quantized, strongly coupled control and target degrees of freedom.
