The broiler industry supplies high-quality animal protein to the world. The ban of antibiotics as growth promoters has opened the way for plenty of phytochemicals and antioxidants to be explored. This study summarizes the use of natural antioxidants in a broiler diet as a way through which to deal with stressors, as well as their effects on the expression of various genes. The transcriptional factors and genes involved in the regulation of redox homeostasis are described and emphasis is placed on nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 and nuclear factor kappa B...

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system that injures the myelin sheath, provoking progressive axonal degeneration and functional impairments. No efficient therapy is available at present to combat such insults, and hence, novel safe and effective alternatives for MS therapy are extremely required. Rutin (RUT) is a flavonoid that exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects in several brain injuries. The present study evaluated the potential beneficial effects of two doses of RUT in a model of pattern-III lesion of MS, in comparison to the conventional standard drug; dimethyl fumarate (DMF)...

BACKGROUND: Early weaning is prone to damage intestinal barrier function, resulting in diarrhea, while rutin as a natural flavonoid with multiple biological functions shows potential in piglets. Therefore, the effects of dietary rutin on growth, antidiarrheal, barrier function, antioxidant status, and cecal microbiota of weaned piglets were investigated with the CON (basal diet) and Rutin (basal diet+500 mg/kg rutin) groups fed for 14 days. RESULTS: The results showed that dietary 500 mg/kg rutin significantly decreased diarrhea index, serum diamine oxidase activity, and total aerobic bacterial population in mesenteric lymph nodes, while significantly increased the gain-to-feed ratio (G: F) and serum growth hormone content, jejunal villus height and villus height to crypt depth ratio, and enhanced jejunal Claudin-1 and zonula occludens-1 mRNA and protein expression...

Antioxidants from natural sources have long been of interest to researchers. In this paper, taking the traditional Tibetan medicine Ribes himalense as an example, an integrated approach was used to identify and isolate its chemical composition with free-radical-scavenging properties from its ethanol extract. First, the ethanol extract of Ribes himalense was pretreated using polyamide medium-pressure liquid chromatography (polyamide-MPLC), and the target fraction (Fr4) was obtained. Then, a combined HPLC mode was utilized to purify antioxidants in Fr4 under the guidance of an online HPLC-1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (HPLC-DPPH) activity screening system...

BACKGROUND: Neuroinflammation following peripheral surgery plays a key role in postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) development and there is no effective therapy to inflammation-mediated cognitive impairment. Recent studies showed that rutin, a natural flavonoid compound, conferred neuroprotection. However, the effects and mechanisms of rutin on cognition of surgical and aged mice and LPS-induced BV2 need deeper exploration. METHODS: The effect of rutin in vivo and vitro were evaluated by Morris water maze test, HE stainin, Golgi-Cox staining, IF, IHC, RT-PCR, Flow Cytometer and Western blotting...

Plant polyphenols are characterized by a wide range of biological activities, including antioxidant properties, and have a high geroprotective potential. The purpose of this work was to investigate the effect of the extract of rowan berries (Sorbus aucuparia L.) on the lifespan and stress resistance of Drosophila melanogaster with the identification of possible mechanisms of its biological activity. It has been established that an ethanol extract of S. aucuparia berries, the main components of which are rutin and cyanidin-3-rutinoside, has a pronounced antioxidant activity in vitro...

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a persistent environmental pollutant that can accumulate in the kidneys and eventually cause kidney damage. Rutin (RUTIN) is a natural flavonoid with multiple biological activities, and its use in against kidney damage has been widely studied in recent years. It is not yet known whether rutin protects against kidney damage caused by PFOA. In this study, 30 ICR mice were randomly divided into 3 groups: CTRL group, PFOA group and PFOA+RUTIN group. The mice were fed continuously by gavage for 28 days...

Consumer demand for tasty and quality meat has been quickly increasing. This study investigated how dietary supplemented rutin affects meat quality, muscle fatty acid profile, and antioxidant capacity in the Chinese indigenous Qingyuan partridge chicken. A cohort of 180 healthy 119-day-old chickens was subjected to a randomized assignment into three groups, identified as the control, R200, and R400 groups, with respective supplementation of 0, 200, and 400 mg/kg of rutin. The results revealed insignificance in growth performance, namely, average daily gain, average daily feed intake, and feed-to-gain ratio, across the various treatment groups ( p > 0...

This study explores the photoprotective effects of rutin, a bioflavonoid found in some vegetables and fruits, against UVA-induced damage in human skin fibroblasts. Our results show that rutin increases cell viability and reduces the high levels of ROS generated by photo-oxidative stress (1 and 2 h of UVA exposure). These effects are related to rutin's ability to modulate the Nrf2 transcriptional pathway. Interestingly, activation of the Nrf2 signaling pathway results in an increase in reduced glutathione and Bcl2/Bax ratio, and the subsequent protection of mitochondrial respiratory capacity...

Pathologic hyperreactive inflammatory responses occur when there is excessive activation of a proinflammatory NF-κB pathway and a reduced cytoprotective NRF2 cascade. The noncytotoxic, highly selective COX-2 inhibitory flavonol-enriched butanol fraction (UaB) from Uvaria alba ( U. alba ) was investigated for its inflammatory modulating potential by targeting NF-κB activation and NRF2 activity. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was initially performed to measure levels of proinflammatory mediators [nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin E2 , and reactive oxygen species (ROS)] and cytokines [tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), IL-1β, and IL-6], followed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and western blotting to determine mRNA and protein expression, respectively...

Rutin is a flavonoid present in many plant species. Because of its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic properties, rutin is of interest for its potential protective effects against toxic agents. The hepatoprotective, renoprotective, and cardioprotective effects of rutin are reviewed. The antioxidant effects of rutin are elicited by enhancing antioxidant enzymes such as GST, GGT, CAT, GPx, SOD, and GR, activating the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway, elevating GSH content, and the reduction in MDA. The anti-inflammatory effects of rutin are mediated by the inhibition of IL-1β, IL-6, TGF-β1, COX-2, iNOS, TLR4, and XO...

Here, we looked into the potential effects of rutin on oxidative stress in the prehierarchical small white follicles (SWFs) from 580-day-old (D580) laying chickens. According to the findings, aging D580 layer ferroptosis was much higher than it was for laying hens during the peak period (280-day-old, D280)...
