BACKGROUND: In the late 1990s, the use of high-dose chemotherapy (HDCT) and stem-cell rescue held promise for patients with advanced and poor prognosis germ-cell tumors (GCT). We started a randomized phase II trial to assess the efficacy of sequential HDCT compared with cisplatin, etoposide, and bleomycin (PEB). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients were randomly assigned to receive four cycles of PEB every 3 weeks or two cycles of PEB followed by a high-dose sequence (HDS) comprising HD-cyclophosphamide (7...

OBJECTIVES: Characterize Osteoarticular Brucellosis in the University Hospital of Coimbra (HUC) in the past decade. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study of the cases diagnosed between January/2000 and December/2009 in the HUC. RESULTS: Ninety patients were admitted with the dia-gnosis of brucellosis in our hospital, of whom 44 (49%; 18 men; 26 women, mean 49.5 years) had osteoarticular complications. Twenty-five (45%) patients had a positive epidemiological context...

PURPOSE: Preoperative chemoradiotherapy followed by surgery represents the standard of care for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). Cetuximab has proved activity in advanced colorectal cancer, and its incorporation in preoperative treatment may increase tumor downstaging. METHODS AND MATERIALS: After biopsy and staging, uT3/uT4 N0/+ LARC received single-agent cetuximab in three doses, followed by weekly cetuximab plus 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), concomitantly with RT...

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a multisystem disorder characterised by mutations of the CFTR gene, which encodes for an important component in the coordination of electrolyte movement across of epithelial cell membranes. Symptoms are pulmonary disease, pancreatic exocrine insufficiency, male infertility and elevated sweat concentrations. The CFTR gene has numerous mutations (>1000) and functionally important polymorphisms (>200). Early identification is important to provide appropriate therapeutic interventions, prognostic and genetic counselling and to ensure access to specialised medical services...

OBJECTIVES: To report a case of acute prostatitis as the first symptom of brucellosis. METHODS: 43-year-old patient who presented with a clinical picture of acute prostatitis and a febrile syndrome for seven days. Physical exam, blood and urine analysis and microbiological tests, and specific serologic studies were performed. RESULTS: Microbiological diagnosis was negative for bacteria, but Bengala pink (+), antibrucella serum agglutination (+) 1/320, and anti-Brucella Coombs test (+) 1/5120...

We report the genomic organization, RNA and protein expression patterns of the gene encoding for the human homolog of the yeast ubiquitin fusion-degradation protein-1 (UFD1L). This enzyme is involved in a ubiquitin-dependent proteolytic pathway (UFD), firstly described in yeast. The human UFD1L gene is organized into 12 exons ranging in size from 33 to 161 bp. Sequence analysis of the 5'-flanking region of the gene revealed a high GC content, multiple CCAAT-binding motifs, CREB, CFT, and AP-2 sites. RNA transcripts were detected in all tissues and cell lines examined, including thymus, thymocytes, T- and B-cells, fibroblasts, chorionic villi, and amniocytes...

This paper consists the theorical review and the current concepts of the subject and the second includes the casuistry of the Stomatology Department of the Pulido Valente Hospital. From April 1989 to 1991 (2 years), a study was made on Sjögren Syndrome (Primary and Secondary) of multiple character with the particular co-operation of the Portuguese Institute of Rheumatology. With this paper we wish to point out the importance of the oral evaluation of the study of the plurisystemic diseases as well as to establish criterions of diagnosis for the Portuguese population...
