REVIEW

Trauma remains the leading cause of death in the first 4 decades of life and is surpassed only by cancer and atherosclerotic disease as the overall leading causes of death in the United States. Many of the injuries involve the facial region, including soft tissue trauma. This article highlights the current available modalities used in the management of unsightly scars or those scars whose location and appearance compromise function.

The purpose of this article is to discuss some of the more commonly performed aesthetic surgical procedures to augment the final outcome of orthognathic surgery. These procedures are divided into two categories: those that can safely and predictably be performed simultaneously with orthognathic surgery and those that ideally should be performed independently of orthognathic surgery. This latter category also includes camouflage surgery, which includes aesthetic surgical procedures that are performed to camouflage or mask underlying dentofacial deformities in patients who, for various reasons, are not candidates for traditional orthognathic surgery or prefer a "smaller" operation...

Preoperative patient evaluation is an essential component of any surgical practice. A complete history and physical, along with appropriate diagnostic tests, are performed routinely to ensure a safe and predictable delivery of care. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons use this principle in everyday practice. Regardless of type of surgery and practice (office-based dentoalveolar surgery, orthognathic surgery, trauma, elective aesthetic surgery), oral and maxillofacial surgeons must formulate a decision-making process and a treatment plan regarding the perioperative management of patients...

Traumatic carotid-cavernous fistulae are rare yet potentially lethal vascular anomalies in the skull base seen after craniomaxillofacial trauma. This aberrant vascular communication has been extensively evaluated and classified, with a number of treatment modalities available to clinicians. The ultimate and definitive treatment of carotid-cavernous fistulae falls beyond the scope of craniomaxillofacial surgery. Nevertheless, clinicians treating patients with craniofacial injuries should have a complete understanding of this pathological entity, because urgent intervention may improve patient outcome...
