RATIONALE: Atmospheric pressure matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (AP-MALDI) mass spectrometry has enabled the untargeted analysis and imaging of neuropeptides and proteins in biological tissues under ambient conditions. Sensitivity in AP-MALDI can be improved by using sample-specific preparation methods. METHODS: A comprehensive and detailed optimization strategy including instrument parameters, matrix spraying and sample tissue washing pretreatment was implemented to enhance the sensitivity and coverage of neuropeptides in mouse pituitary tissues by commercial AP-MALDI mass spectrometry imaging (MSI)...

BACKGROUND: Millions of children are hospitalised due to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection every year. Treatment is supportive, and current therapies (e.g. inhaled bronchodilators, epinephrine, nebulised hypertonic saline, and corticosteroids) are ineffective or have limited effect. Respiratory syncytial virus immunoglobulin may be used prophylactically to prevent hospital admission from RSV-related illness. It may be considered for the treatment of established severe RSV infection or for treatment in an immunocompromised host, although it is not licensed for this purpose...

High-quality research on the safety and effectiveness of over-the-counter medications in pregnancy is limited. Physicians should explore nonpharmacologic treatments before recommending medication. For nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), H1 antihistamines, and ginger are safe and effective. Physicians can recommend calcium carbonate, H2 antihistamines, and proton pump inhibitors for gastroesophageal reflux disease. Osmotic laxatives, fiber preparations, and probiotics are safe and effective treatments for constipation...

BACKGROUND: Severe variations in osmotic pressure are significant contributors to critical patient morbidity and mortality and might also affect platelet volume. We aimed to investigate possible osmotic-induced changes in mean platelet volume (MPV) and their possible effects on platelet aggregation activity (PLAG). METHODS: We induced experimental variations of serum osmolality in blood samples from healthy volunteers (heparinized whole blood, WB) and isolated platelets (Platelet Rich Plasma, PRP) by adding isotonic, hypertonic, and hypotonic solutions of saline/water (pH = 7...

This case report describes ocular and nasal leech infestation (hirudiniasis) in a dog. The patient presented for a suspected ocular foreign body. The patient was sedated to allow proper examination, which revealed a leech foreign body attached to the bulbar conjunctiva adjacent to the inferotemporal limbus of the left eye. A 3.5% hypertonic saline solution was applied topically to the eye in four sequential drops, until the leech detached itself and was removed with a cotton bud. The affected eye was found to have a small corneal ulcer, a small area of scleral haemorrhage, and prominent lymphoid follicles within the third eyelid...

Nanoparticles are ultrafine particulate matter having considerable potential for treatment of central nervous system (CNS) disorders. Despite their tiny size, the blood-brain barrier (BBB) restricts their access to the CNS. Their direct cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) administration bypasses the BBB endothelium, but still fails to give adequate brain uptake. We present a novel approach for efficient CNS delivery of 111 In-radiolabelled gold nanoparticles (AuNPs; 10-15 nm) via intra-cisterna magna administration, with tracking by SPECT imaging...

PURPOSE: Current Neurocritical Care Society guidelines on the management of cerebral edema recommend hypertonic saline (HTS) over mannitol in some scenarios, but practical questions remain regarding the appropriate administration method, concentration/dose, monitoring to ensure safe use, and storage. The aim of this article is to address these practical concerns based on the evidence currently available. SUMMARY: Many different hypertonic solutions have been studied to define the optimal hyperosmolar substance to relieve acute cerebral edema in patients with conditions such as acute ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and traumatic brain injury...

OBJECTIVE: The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) activation is the milestone in ascites formation. Hypertonic saline solution (HSS) has attracted considerable interest over the last years in ascites control. Other therapeutic models and concepts have been introduced to overcome diuretic resistance and control ascites. We aimed to evaluate the effects of adding HSS infusion and/or etilefrine to oral diuretics therapy on inflammatory and metabolic pathways, renal and systemic hemodynamics, and clinical outcomes by estimating the changes in selected biochemical and biological markers in cirrhotic patients with ascites...

BACKGROUND: Bronchiolitis caused by the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the main reason for hospitalization in infants. Supportive care is the mainstay of treatment, and tests are restricted to a few indications. During 2015, our hospital bronchiolitis protocol (2015 HBP) was updated according to the latest practice guidelines. BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-threatening multiorgan genetic disease, particularly affecting the lungs, where recurrent infections are the main cause of reduced life expectancy. In CF, mutations in the gene encoding the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein impair transepithelial electrolyte and water transport, resulting in airway dehydration, and a thickening of the mucus associated with abnormal viscoelastic properties. Our aim was to develop a rheological method to assess the effects of hypertonic saline (NaCl) and NaHCO3 on CF sputum viscoelasticity in vitro, and to identify the critical steps in sample preparation and in the rheological measurements...

When using ventilators in the management of the coronavirus disease 2019 patient, dense and abundant mucous secretions are formed, obstructing the endotracheal tube and making its aspiration difficult. This situation is worsened if in order to minimize the risk of infection of the medical personnel, the humidifier is disconnected. This circumstance forces the tube to be removed, cleaned, or changed, increasing the workload of the intensive care unit staff. Other therapies tested until now, like mesna, acetylcysteine, or hypertonic saline solution, are valid alternatives, although they have not shown great efficacy for this specific procedure in the past...

INTRODUCTION: Colonoscopy is a useful tool in modern medicine and is increasingly employed for both diagnostic and treatment purposes. However, bowel preparations can cause electrolyte imbalance, with the risk apparently related to the type of bowel cleansing solution used, the age of the patient and their comorbidities. Symptomatic hyponatremia, especially coma, is a rare complication of oral bowel preparation for colonoscopy and is thought to result from excessive antidiuretic hormone secretion...
