OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the Gekko coil system in treating intracranial aneurysms (IA) in clinical practice. METHODS: A prospective, multicenter, randomized, open-label, parallel positive control, non-inferiority trial conducted by 11 centers in China. Patients with a target IA were randomized 1:1 to coiling with either Gekko or Axium coils. The primary outcome was successful aneurysm occlusion at 6-month postoperative follow-up, whereas the secondary outcomes included the successful occlusion aneurysm rate in the immediate postoperative period, recanalization rate at the six months follow-up, and technical success and security...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The CATCH (Coil Application Trial in China) trial was designed to assess the safety and efficacy of the Numen Coil Embolization System in the treatment of intracranial aneurysms in comparison with the Axium coil (ev3/Medtronic). Although the endovascular treatment of small (< 5 mm) intracranial aneurysms has been reported with favorable long-term clinical and angiographic outcomes, randomized trials are still lacking. Data for aneurysms smaller than 5 mm were extracted from the CATCH trial...

Vertebral artery dissection is a common cause of stroke in young adults without predisposing risk factors for cerebrovascular disease. We describe the case of a 28-year-old patient who presented with an ischemic stroke secondary to a stab wound to the neck that affected the vertebral artery. A physical examination revealed neurological deterioration (Glasgow 8/15), a sutured neck wound, no palpable hematoma, no thrills, and no active bleeding. A computed tomography angiography revealed a left vertebral artery arteriovenous fistula with a component of a pseudoaneurysm, for which a neurointerventional consultation was carried out...

Background: Patient-reported medical histories and medical consults are primary approaches to obtaining patients' medical histories in dental settings. While patient-reported medical histories are reported to have inconsistencies, sparse information exists regarding the completeness of medical providers' responses to dental providers' medical consults. This study examined records from a predoctoral dental student clinic to determine the reasons for medical consults; the medical information requested, the completeness of returned responses, and the time taken to receive answers for medical consult requests...

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the safety and efficacy of the Numen coil in comparison to the Axium coil in the treatment of intracranial aneurysms. METHODS: As CATCH is a prospective, randomized, controlled, open-label, non-inferiority trial conducted in ten centers across China, subjects who fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria were randomized 1:1 to either a test group (Numen) or a control group (Axium). The primary outcome was based upon the successful aneurysm occlusion at the six-month follow-up, while secondary outcomes included technical success, the recanalization and retreatment rates, the rate of serious adverse events (SAE) at the six-month and 12-month follow-up...

INTRODUCTION: Oral health mirrors systemic health; yet, few clinics worldwide provide dental care as part of primary medical care, nor are dental records commonly integrated with medical records. OBJECTIVES: To determine the degree to which misreporting of underlying health conditions poses problems for dental clinicians, we assessed misreporting of 2 common medical health conditions-hypertension and diabetes-at the time of dental examination and assessment. METHODS: Using comparative chart analysis, we analyzed medical records of a diverse group of patients previously seen at the University of Texas Physician outpatient practice and then treated at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Dentistry...

RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL

BACKGROUND: A significant number of patients who undergo a standard inguinal hernia repair or a Pfannenstiel incision develop chronic (> 3 months) post-surgical inguinal pain (PSIP) due to nerve entrapment. If medication or peripheral nerve blocks fail, surgery including neurectomies may offer relief. However, some patients do not respond to any of the currently available remedial treatment modalities. Targeted spinal cord stimulation (SCS) of the dorsal root ganglion (DRG) is a relatively new type of therapy that has a potential to significantly reduce chronic PSIP...

OBJECTIVES: Anterior Cutaneous Nerve Entrapment Syndrome (ACNES) is a debilitating neuropathic pain condition. A small portion of patients do not respond to any currently available treatment modalities. These patients, often young women, might benefit from targeted spinal cord stimulation of the dorsal root ganglion (DRG). METHODS: This retrospective case series describes five ACNES patients who were referred from a Dutch dedicated tertiary referral center to collaborating sites with extensive experience in DRG stimulation to be implanted with a DRG Axium System (St...

BACKGROUND: Standardized dental diagnostic terminologies (SDDxTs) were introduced decades ago. Their use has been on the rise, accompanying the adoption of electronic health records (EHRs). One of the most broadly used terminologies is the Dental Diagnostic System (DDS). Our aim was to assess the adoption of SDDxTs by US dental schools by using the Rogers diffusion of innovations framework, focusing on the DDS. METHODS: The authors electronically surveyed clinic deans in all US dental schools (n = 61) to determine use of an EHR and SDDxT, perceived barriers to adoption of an SDDxT, and the effect of implementing an SDDxT on clinical productivity...

The Consortium for Oral Health Research and Informatics (COHRI) is leading the way in use of the Dental Diagnostic System (DDS) terminology in the axiUm electronic health record (EHR). This collaborative pilot study had two aims: 1) to investigate whether use of the DDS terms positively impacted predoctoral dental students' critical thinking skills measured by the Health Sciences Reasoning Test (HSRT), and 2) to refine study protocols. The study design was a natural experiment with cross-sectional data collection using the HSRT for 15 classes (2013-17) of students at three dental schools...

Initial angiographic and clinical outcomes were excellent. The final results are presented herein. The Obama administration is seeking to increase access to and improve the efficiency of the health care system in the United States. One aspect of those efforts is a push towards the utilization of electronic health records (EHRs) by health care providers. Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine (NSU-CDM) opened its doors in 1997 and began its evolution from paper charts to EHRs in 2006. AxiUm, a computer-run patient record and clinical management system, has become an integral part of the college's quality assurance program and its students' clinical education...
