The objective was to determine the predictive ability of carcass length for the number of equal-thickness chops obtained from a boneless pork loin. Longer pork carcasses are assumed to yield longer loins and, therefore, an increased number of chops. Loins were collected from pigs (1,238 total) raised under commercial conditions and marketed when the mean pig weight in a pen reached 138 kg. Pigs were slaughtered over 7 wk in a commercial facility. Carcass length was measured at 1 d postmortem on the left side of each carcass from the anterior edge of the symphysis pubis bone to the anterior edge of the first rib...

A 20-year-old woman with a perineal alveolar soft part sarcoma was referred to our hospital. MRI showed that an irregular oval tumor occupied the perineum. The tumor was contiguous to the vagina, rectum, levator muscle, and pubis and was diagnosed as alveolar soft part sarcoma by transvaginal biopsy. Laparoscopy-assisted total pelvic exenteration combined with a pubic resection was performed, and an R0 resection with a wide margin was achieved. It is well known that only R0 resection improves the outcome of patients with localized alveolar soft part sarcoma...

INTRODUCTION: Urological injuries in pelvic fractures are noticed in 6-15% of the cases. The bladder, due to its anatomical position, is prone to rupture in pelvic fractures. The majority of urinary bladder injuries are either extraperitoneal or intraperitoneal. Nonetheless, both types can occur simultaneously in 6% of the cases. PRESENTATION OF THE CASE: A 45-year-old male was brought to our emergency department after being struck by an automobile. In the absence of signs of urethral injury, a Foley's catheter was inserted revealing gross hematuria...

Characterizing australopith pelvic morphology has been difficult in part because of limited fossilized pelvic material. Here, we reassess the morphology of an under-studied adult right ilium and pubis (Sts 65) from Member 4 of Sterkfontein, South Africa, and provide a hypothetical digital reconstruction of its overall pelvic morphology. The small size of the pelvis, presence of a preauricular sulcus, and shape of the sciatic notch allow us to agree with past interpretations that Sts 65 likely belonged to a female...

BACKGROUND: A concealed penis is a condition where part of the penis is invisible below the surface of the prepubic skin. Dermolipectomy can correct this condition, although it involves a long abdominal crease incision, or infrapubic incision around the base of the penis, and a possibility for genital lymphedema. This study describes Shaeer's technique, a minimally invasive method for revealing the concealed penis. METHODS: A 1- to 2-cm-long incision was cut over the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) on either side...

Acetabular revision is a challenging operation, especially when dealing with major bone loss and poor bone quality. This article describes a detailed approach to defect analysis, including measurement of bone deficiency and bone quality. A custom-made titanium implant, with precisely outlined flanges to the host bones of the ilium, ischium, and pubis, taking into account the bone quality for optimal screw purchase, was used to reconstruct the acetabular defect. Preliminary results for 12 patients who were retrospectively reviewed after a minimum follow-up of 18 months were promising...

Pelvic osteomyelitis is a rare infection. Ilium, ischium, pubis and acetabulum are commonly affected sites. Pelvic radiography, pelvic magnetic resonance and scintigraphy are useful imaging techniques for diagnosis. However, diagnoses should be confirmed with bone biopsy from the lesion. Sometimes diagnosis is delayed because of deep localization of infection site. Here in, we report a 15-year-old girl with left groin pain who was diagnosed as pelvic osteomyelitis one month after initial symptoms. Patient was successfully treated with antibiotics for 8 weeks...
