Serotonin is known to regulate energy and calcium homeostasis in several mammalian species. The objective of this study was to determine if pre-partum infusions of 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), the immediate precursor to serotonin synthesis, could modulate energy homeostasis at the level of the hepatocyte in post-partum Holstein and Jersey dairy cows. Twelve multiparous Holstein cows and twelve multiparous Jersey cows were intravenously infused daily for approximately 7 d pre-partum with either saline or 1 mg/kg bodyweight of 5-HTP...

Using transgenic mice (TG) that overexpress the human 5-HT4a-receptor specifically in cardiomyocytes, we wanted to know whether 5-HT can be formed and degraded in the mammalian heart and whether this can likewise lead to inotropic and chronotropic effects in this TG model. We noted that the 5-HT precursor, 5-hydroxy-tryptophan (5-HTP), can exert inotropic and chronotropic effects in cardiac preparations from TG but not from wild type (WT): similar results were found in human atrial preparations, as well as in intact TG animals using echocardiography...

The exclusive properties of monolithic supports enable fast mass transfer, high porosity, low back pressure, easy preparation process and miniaturisation and the availability of different chemistries make them particularly suitable materials for high-throughput (HTP) protein and peptide separation. In this review recent advances in monolith-based chromatographic supports for HTP screening of protein and peptide samples are presented and their application in HTP sample preparation (separation, enrichment, depletion, proteolytic digestion) for HTP proteomics is discussed...

We hypothesized that the administration of explosion-puffed coffee, containing γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), would be associated with a reduction of the caffeine effect on sleep behavior and behavioral patterns, which was investigated in a Drosophila model. The effects of feeding roasted coffee beans (RB), explosion-puffed coffee beans puffed at 0.75MPa and 0.9MPa (PB 7.5 and PB 9.0, respectively), or decaffeinated coffee beans (DeRB) on locomotor activity and behavioral patterns of Drosophila was analyzed...

Many systems for field-based, high-throughput phenotyping (FB-HTP) quantify and characterize the reflected radiation from the crop canopy to derive phenotypes, as well as infer plant function and health status. However, given the technology's nascent status, it remains unknown how biophysical and physiological properties of the plant canopy impact downstream interpretation and application of canopy reflectance data. In that light, we assessed relationships between leaf thickness and several canopy-associated traits, including normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), which was collected via active reflectance sensors carried on a mobile FB-HTP system, carbon isotope discrimination (CID), and chlorophyll content...

The aim of the present study is to investigate the role and potential mechanisms of peripheral serotonin in postoperative intra-abdominal adhesion formation in mice. The caecum-rubbing operations were conducted for intra-abdominal adhesion formation modelling in wild-type and Tph1-/- mice. The deficiency of serotonin significantly decreased the adhesion scores, weight loss, and adhesion thickness as well as levels of collagen fibres and hydroxyproline in the adhesive tissues. The Tph1-/- mice exhibited a milder inflammatory response and oxidative stress in the adhesive tissues than did the wild-type mice...

Post translational modifications of immunoglobulins have been a topic of great interest and have been repeatedly reported as a major factor in disease pathology. Cost-effective, reproducible and high-throughput (HTP) isolation of immunoglobulins from human serum is vital for studying the changes in protein structure and the following understanding of disease development. Although there are many methods for the isolation of specific immunoglobulin classes, only a few of them are applicable for isolation of all subtypes and variants...

Research over the past 2 decades has demonstrated that infants are equipped with remarkable computational abilities that allow them to find words in continuous speech. Infants can encode information about the transitional probability (TP) between syllables to segment words from artificial and natural languages. As previous research has tested infants immediately after familiarization, infants' ability to retain sequential statistics beyond the immediate familiarization context remains unknown. Here, we examine infants' memory for statistically defined words 10 min after familiarization with an Italian corpus...

High-throughput phenotyping (HTP) platforms can be used to measure traits that are genetically correlated with wheat ( L.) grain yield across time. Incorporating such secondary traits in the multivariate pedigree and genomic prediction models would be desirable to improve indirect selection for grain yield. In this study, we evaluated three statistical models, simple repeatability (SR), multitrait (MT), and random regression (RR), for the longitudinal data of secondary traits and compared the impact of the proposed models for secondary traits on their predictive abilities for grain yield...

Multiple tryptophan (Trp) proteins are not amenable to fluorescence study because individual residue emission is not resolvable. Biosynthetic incorporation of an indole analogue such as 5-hydroxyindole has not provided sufficient spectroscopic resolution because of low quantum yield and small emission shift. Here, 5-hydroxyindole is used as the starting framework for building a blue emitting fluorophore of high quantum yield, 2-phenyl-6H-oxazolo[4,5-e]indole (PHOXI). This is a three reagent reaction completed in 10 min under ambient conditions in borate buffer at pH 8...

In present study, a novel method was developed to synthesize siderite under high temperature and high pressure (SID-HTP). SID-HTP was characterized by N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms (BET), XRD, SEM, and FTIR and utilized to remove arsenic(V) (As(V)) from aqueous solution. Results showed that, under oxic condition, pH had ignorable effect on As(V) adsorption. However, adsorption capacity increased with increasing pH from 2 to 7 and remained relatively constant at higher pH until 10 under anoxic condition...

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHT) is a frequent and asymptomatic pathology in 80% of patients, and a parathyroidal adenoma is found in the most case. However, rare cases might occur during pregnancy; and the literature reported up to 200 cases. We report three cases of PHT that occurred during the second and last third trimesters of pregnancy stage in patients aged 26, 42 and 32-year-old. Despite diagnosis limitations, since scintigraphy is prohibited in pregnancy, the patients were managed conservatively with good prognosis for both mothers and babies...

The growing amount of food waste (FW) in China poses great pressure on the environment. Complex solid organics limit the hydrolysis of FW, hence impairing anaerobic digestion. This study employed hydrothermal pretreatment (HTP) to facilitate the solubilization of FW. When HTP temperature increased from 100 to 200°C, soluble carbohydrate content first increased to a peak at 140°C and then decreased, whereas total carbohydrate content was negatively correlated with increasing temperature due to the enhanced degradation and Maillard reactions...
