Parasitic copepods of the family Lernaeidae are often found infesting freshwater fishes worldwide. They cause lernaeosis, a disease that can lead to serious pathogenic effects on their fish hosts. The most common lernaeid is the Lernaea cyprinacea, which has been widely introduced through importation of tropical fishes, e.g. cyprinids. In South America, it is one of the most common parasites both in wild and in farmed fish in the central region of Argentina. The silverside Odontesthes bonariensis is the most important fish of the sport fisheries of Argentina and one of the fish most affected by lernaeosis...

Copepod crustaceans are an abundant and ecologically significant group whose basic biology is guided by numerous visually guided behaviors. These behaviors are driven by copepod eyes, including naupliar eyes and Gicklhorn's organs, which vary widely in structure and function among species. Yet little is known about the molecular aspects of copepod vision. In this study we present a general overview of the molecular aspects of copepod vision by identifying phototransduction genes from newly generated and publicly available RNA-sequencing data and assemblies from 12 taxonomically diverse copepod species...

The present study explored the susceptibility of Puntius pulchellus subadults to Lernaea cyprinacea infection subsequent upon their first introduction to an intensive culture system that had a previous history of Lernaea infection and evaluated the efficacy of doramectin against the parasite. All the P. pulchellus introduced to the culture pond got infected demonstrating 100 % susceptibility of this species to Lernaea infection. Pathological changes caused by the parasite as evidenced by the extensive hemorrhage and tissue necrosis of the host at the point of parasite attachment was most severe in P...

The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of parasite infection on haematological parameters of common carp, Cyprinus carpio . To this end, fish with same age were sampled from a warm water fish farm. After fish sampling, fish were transferred to lab for parasite study. Parasite incidence percent and density were calculated for two population carps. After parasite study, to investigate the haematological parameters, the blood sampling was carried out from two group fish i.e. infected (n = 20) and non-infected fish (n = 20)...

After recording biometric characteristics, common necropsy and parasitology methods were used. The Lernaeid parasites, Lernaea spp, are crustacean ectoparasites that occur in a variety of fishes worldwide. In the present study, Shizothorax zarudnyi (n = 1,500) were examined during August 2012 to 2013 to determine the prevalence of Lernaeid parasites at one Species fish of Chahnimeh lakes Sistan, Iran. Two species of the genus Lernaea; L. cyprinacea and L. polymorpha, were recorded. The overall prevalence rates of L. cyprinacea and L. polymorpha were 15.47 and 10.20 % respectively. The relationship between body weight and Lernaeid parasites showed that prevalence of L...

This study describes the hematological alterations in Astyanax altiparanae associated with infestation with Lernaea cyprinacea. The study was carried out in a lagoon of the Mogi-Guaçu River, in the municipality of Pirassununga, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Of 46 fish examined, 45.6% had their integument infested by L. cyprinacea, with a mean intensity of 4.9 parasites per fish and a mean abundance of 2.2, giving a total of 139 recovered crustaceans. The abundance of L. cyprinacea correlated positively with the length and weight of the hosts, and the intensity of infestation was higher in female hosts...

OBJECTIVE: Lernaeids are crustacean parasites that are globally distributed among freshwater and marine fish. Approximately 110 species of Lernaeids have been divided into 14 genera. The most common species of Lernaeids is Lernaea cyprinacea, which has been transmitted to ornamental fish worldwide. The economic importance of L. cyprinacea is increasing because of the epidemic caused by the parasite in most of the ornamental fish breeding centers in different parts of the world. The parasite affects its host's health, decreases growth rate, and causes abnormal metabolic activity...

The full mitochondrial (mt) genome of Sinergasilus polycolpus is 14 000 bp in length, and it contains 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, 2 rRNA genes and 1 non-coding region. The genome organization, nucleotide composition and codon usage are different compared to other Copepodas, such as Lernaea cyprinacea. The full mt genome of S. polycolpus provides useful information for further studies on epidemiology and phylogenetics.

Forty-four putative species of parasites were found and most of these appear to be native parasites, which have not previously been described. Two parasite species, Lernaea cyprinacea and Ligula intestinalis, are probably introduced. Both were found on or in a range of native fish species, where they may cause severe disease...
