PURPOSE: The aim of the current study was to evaluate potential relationships between serum adropin levels and metabolic parameters in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty women with PCOS and 20 healthy, age and body mass index (BMI) matched controls were included in the study. All subjects underwent venous blood drawing on the early follicular phase after an overnight fasting. Serum adropin levels were measured with enzyme immunosorbent assay (EIA)...

THE AIM: of the present study was to evaluate serum concentrations of adrenal and ovarian androgens and sex hormone-binding globulin in obese women without additional diseases and in obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome with and without insulin resistance. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study group involved 73 obese women (39 with PCOS--A and 34 obese without additional diseases--B). The serum concentration of glucose and insulin were measured and the study group was divided on the basis of HOMA index into two subgroups: A I-PCO without insulin resistance (n=18, mean age 27...

OBJECTIVE: In virgin policystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients transabdominal sonography is the preferential method of the pelvic examination. The purpose of this study was to determine ovarian morphology by the transabdominal route by pulse inversion harmonic imaging (PIHI) in virgin PCOS patients and to compare the diagnostic image quality with conventional B-mode ultrasonography (CBU). METHODS: Fifty-two ovaries in 26 virgin patients were evaluated by the transabdominal approach...

UNLABELLED: The policystic ovary (PO) results from a systemic hormonal dysfunction, characterized by hyperandrogenemia, insulin resistance and anovulation. OBJECTIVE: Assessment was made of clinical and biochemical features of patients with PO. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 211 clinical of charts of patients with ultrasonographic diagnosis of PO seen at the Hospital Juárez de México from 1996 to 2000 was performed. Evaluation was made of body mass index (BMI), waist hip index (WHI), Ferriman index, acanthosis nigricans, lipid and hormonal profile...

Massive ovarian edema is a rare cause of ovarian enlargement in young women. We report the case of a 20-year-old woman with unilateral massive ovarian edema with findings on ultrasound of an enlarged policystic ovary and pedicle arterial and venous blood flow observed with color and pulsed wave Doppler examination. Massive ovarian edema can be managed conservatively and blood flow in the pedicle of the ovary is detected by color and pulsed wave Doppler examination.

The follicular fluid (FF) content of androgens, estrogens and epidermal growth factor (EGF) has been evaluated in a group of patients with policystic ovary disease (PCO) and in one of normally-ovulating infertile women (NOW) in an IVF/ET program. The in vitro response to follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) has been also evaluated in granulosa luteal cells from the same patients. PCO patients showed significantly higher FF androstenedione (delta 4) and testosterone (T) and similar FF estrone (E1) and 17 beta-estradiol (E2) levels compared to controls...
