A novel vascular staple (C-staple) was developed that does not enter the vasculature lumen during anastomoses. The objective of this study was to demonstrate C-staple safety when used with a bovine xenograft and compare efficacy of the C-staple procedure with Anastoclip surgical clips or suturing when used with a bovine xenograft. Eight sheep had an acute comparison between suturing and C-staples using both common carotid arteries. Sixteen sheep had xenograft placement in the left carotid artery, eight with C-staples and eight with Anastoclips in a chronic study...

BACKGROUND: The use of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) following the introduction of Nitinol autoexpandable devices has spread rapidly during recent years. In addition, cardiac surgery has been revolutionized due to the use of Nitinol-based sutureless prostheses for aortic valve replacement (AVR). During the same period, however, permanent pacemaker (PPM) implantation has emerged as a frequent complication. The study aim was to identify the risk factors of PPM following the implantation of a Nitinol self-expanding prosthesis (for AVR or TAVI)...

Using a combination of methacrylated collagen and the photosensitizer rose Bengal, a new light-activated biomimetic material for tissue sutureless bonding was developed. This formulation was cross-linked using green light. In vivo tests in mice demonstrate the suitability of the material for sutureless wound closure.

BACKGROUND: Sutureless gastroschisis repair involves covering the abdominal wall defect with the umbilical cord or a synthetic dressing to allow closure by secondary intention. No randomized studies have described the outcomes of this technique. Our objective was to prospectively compare short-term outcomes of sutureless versus sutured closure in a randomized fashion. STUDY DESIGN: We recruited patients who presented with gastroschisis between 2009 and 2014 and were randomized into either sutureless or sutured treatment groups...

Voice alteration is an important complication of thyroid surgery and is closely related to patients' quality of life. There are no studies analyzing effect of energy-based devices (EBD) on voice quality (VQ). Aim of this prospective study is to evaluate impact of sutureless total thyroidectomy performed with EBDs on objective voice parameters of patients without recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) and/or external branch of superior laryngeal nerve (EBSLN) injury. Sixty patients underwent total thyroidectomy with meticulous dissection of EBSLN...

We report the clinical case of a male patient who presented, after an aortic valve replacement with a rapid deployment bioprosthesis, a Heyde-like syndrome, secondary to a moderate aortic paravalvular leakage. All the digestive and hematologic investigations confirmed the diagnosis. A redo surgery to fill the paravalvular gap was accomplished and the postoperative course was uneventful, with a normalization of the biological parameters. To our knowledge, this is the first described case of such a complication with the new generation of sutureless bioprosthesis...

PURPOSE: In recent years, a large variety of medical devices has become available. Every device must be efficient, safe and cost effective, but it is not enough to use it properly without considering the environment in which it will be employed. We applied this kind of analysis to subcutaneously anchored sutureless devices (SAS). METHODS: This is a one-center prospective observational study on safety, effectiveness and cost effectiveness of an SAS device (SecurAcath, Interrad) for securement of peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) in 30 adult cancer patients with treatment expected to be >60 days...

PURPOSE: To compare the postoperative endophthalmitis rate before and after initiation of intracameral (IC) moxifloxacin prophylaxis for both phacoemulsification and sutureless, manual small-incision cataract surgery (M-SICS), as well as in patients with posterior capsular rupture (PCR). DESIGN: Retrospective, clinical registry. PARTICIPANTS: All cataract surgeries (617 453) performed during the 29-month period from January 2014 to May 2016 at the 10 regional Aravind eye hospitals were included...

PURPOSE: Traditionally acceptable methods of anesthesia for vitrectomy surgery are quite varied. However, each of these methods has its own potential for complications that can range from minor to severe. The surgery procedure of vitrectomy for symptomatic vitreous floaters is much simpler, mainly reflecting in the nonuse of sclera indentation, photocoagulation, and the apparently short surgery duration. The use of 27-gauge cannulae makes the puncture of the sclera minimally invasive...

Visibility continues to be a major problem during repair of obstructed total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) resulting in frequent use of deep hypothermia and low flow bypass. Sutureless technique for primary repair of anomalous pulmonary venous connection is fast becoming popular. In this described modification of sutureless technique through the lateral approach, the left atrium is marsupialized around the common pulmonary venous chamber, except on the right lateral aspect, providing a bloodless field with minimal retraction of heart facilitating the surgery at mild hypothermia...

AIM: To evaluate corneal topographic changes and surgically induced astigmatism (SIA) after combined phacoemulsification and 25-gauge transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy (25-G TSV). METHODS: A retrospective study on 96 eyes of 87 patients who underwent combined phacoemulsification and 25-G TSV. The different topographic parameters and SIA were analyzed pre- and postoperatively. RESULTS: There was no significant changes in corneal topographic parameters at different follow up periods...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the approximation of coapted edges in sutureless laser-assisted vessel welding. Tissue shrinkage by laser irradiation may cause coapted edges to separate, reducing strength of welding. This may be avoided by preloaded longitudinal compression on the tissue edges to be welded. This study compared welding strength with and without preloaded compression in ex vivo animal experiments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study evaluated 24 samples of harvested porcine carotid arteries, each having a length of 3 cm and an inner diameter of 1...

PURPOSE: To describe a simple and novel technique of obtaining an extraocular muscle (EOM) biopsy. METHODS: Our sutureless method involves obtaining a full-thickness 3-mm EOM specimen using a disposable punch biopsy. RESULTS: The procedure was performed successfully, with no worsening of eye movement, muscle weakness, or cosmetic defects postoperatively. The acquired full-thickness specimen was sufficient for analysis. CONCLUSIONS: This technique to obtain an EOM biopsy allows a straightforward sutureless method, providing an adequate sample for tissue scrutiny...

Left ventricular pseudoaneurysm (LVPsA) is a rare complication after sutureless patch repair of left ventricular free wall rupture (LVFWR), with few cases reported in the literature so far. We present the case of a young patient who early developed a huge LVPsA and moderate mitral regurgitation after sutureless patch repair for LVFWR after undergoing a successful Dor procedure using the "triple empanada patch technique" to exclude the LVPsA, remodel the left ventricle, and address the moderate mitral regurgitation...

BACKGROUND: With the introduction of sutureless 23-gauge (23G) vitrectomy, the risks for elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) and the need for day 1 review of IOP are less certain. AIMS: To assess current practice for postoperative review in the vitreoretinal service at a large tertiary referral centre; to assess whether day 1 review detected complications altering patient management; to identify risk factors for IOP spikes postvitrectomy. METHODS: Retrospective, consecutive case note review of all patients undergoing 23G vitrectomy at the study institution between April and June 2013...

PURPOSE: To compare 4 limbal-conjunctival autograft fixation techniques-conventional suture, commercial fibrin glue, autologous fibrin glue, and cautery-in primary nasal pterygium surgery. METHODS: This is a retrospective and descriptive study. The postoperative patient discomfort, graft edema, ocular inflammation, and other complications of 4 limbal-conjunctival autograft fixation techniques in primary nasal pterygium surgery were evaluated. RESULTS: Postoperative patient discomfort was significantly lower with the sutureless techniques (p>0...
