Moderate acute intermittent hypoxia (mAIH) elicits a form of spinal, respiratory motor plasticity known as phrenic long-term facilitation (pLTF). In middle-aged male and geriatric female rats, mAIH-induced pLTF is attenuated through unknown mechanisms. In young adults, mAIH activates competing intracellular signaling cascades, initiated by serotonin 2 and adenosine 2A (A2A) receptors, respectively. Since spinal A2A receptor inhibition enhances mAIH-induced pLTF, serotonin dominates, and adenosine constrains mAIH-induced plasticity in the daily rest phase, we hypothesized elevated basal adenosine levels in the ventral cervical spinal cord of aged rats shifts this balance, undermining mAIH-induced pLTF...

Currently, the main obstacle to the widespread utilization of metal chalcogenides (MSx ) as anode for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) is their poor rate capability and inferior cycling stability as a result of the undesirable electrical conductivity and severe pulverization of the nanostructure during large K-ions intercalation-extraction processes. Herein, an ultrafast and long-life potassium storage of metal chalcogenide is rationally demonstrated by employing Fe0.4 Ni0.6 S solid-solution (FNS/C) through molecular structure engineering...

PURPOSE: The human endometrium consists of different layers (basalis and functionalis) and undergoes different phases throughout the menstrual cycle. In a former paper, our research group was able to describe MSX1 as a positive prognosticator in endometrial carcinomas. The aim of this study was to examine the MSX1 expression in healthy endometrial tissue throughout the different phases to gain more insight on the mechanics of MSX-regulation in the female reproductive system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, we investigated a total of 17 normal endometrial tissues (six during proliferative phase and five during early and six during late secretory phase)...

The experience of positive affect during new motherhood is considered essential for a healthy mother-infant relationship, with life-long consequences for both mother and child. Affective availability and contingent responsiveness are often compromised in mothers experiencing postpartum depression, yet how maternal affect impacts parenting is not fully understood. In this study, we used the Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rat model of depression and ultrasonic vocalizations to examine the relationship between maternal affect and parenting...

Inflammation undermines neuroplasticity, including serotonin-dependent phrenic long-term facilitation (pLTF) following moderate acute intermittent hypoxia (mAIH: 3, 5-min episodes, arterial Po2 : 40-50 mmHg; 5-min intervals). Mild inflammation elicited by a low dose of the TLR-4 receptor agonist, lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 100 µg/kg, ip), abolishes mAIH-induced pLTF by unknown mechanisms. In the central nervous system, neuroinflammation primes glia, triggering ATP release and extracellular adenosine accumulation...

Maple water (maple sap) products are produced from sap tapped directly from maple trees, but there is confusion and lack of industry consensus and consumer knowledge as to what constitutes 'authentic' maple water. With an immense potential for growth in the multi-billion dollar functional beverage market, the market promotion of maple water products hinges on establishing standards of identity (SI), which are currently lacking. Herein, we aim to provide publishable SI and compositional chemistry findings of maple water...

The dominant method for generating Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell lines that produce high titers of biotherapeutic proteins utilizes selectable markers such as dihydrofolate reductase (Dhfr) or glutamine synthetase (Gs), alongside inhibitory compounds like methotrexate (MTX) or methionine sulfoximine (MSX), respectively. Recent work has shown the importance of asparaginase (Aspg) for growth in media lacking glutamine-the selection medium for Gs-based selection systems. We generated a Gs/Aspg double knockout CHO cell line and evaluated its utility as a novel dual selectable system via co-transfection of Gs-Enbrel and Aspg-Enbrel plasmids...

BACKGROUND: Homeobox genes play crucial roles in tooth morphogenesis and development and thus mutations in homeobox genes cause developmental disorders such as odontogenic lesions. The aim of this scoping review is to identify and compile available data from the literatures on the topic of homeobox gene expression in odontogenic lesions. METHOD: An electronic search to collate all the information on studies on homeobox gene expression in odontogenic lesions was carried out in four databases (PubMed, EBSCO host, Web of Science and Cochrane Library) with selected keywords...

Heavy metal pollution has resulted in numerous environmental challenges. However, classic approaches, involving the use of solid adsorbents are subject to limitations, including the high energy consumption required for processing before and after use. Accordingly, strategies that facilitate the use of metal capture media that extends beyond waste remediation are attractive. Herein, a porous fluorescent aerogel (CPC aerogel) is constructed by immersing amino-based carbon dots (CDs-NH2 ) into a polyethyleneimine (PEI)/carboxymethylated cellulose (CMC) aerogel network for the simultaneous detection and adsorption of Cr(VI)...

Embryonic diapause is a reproductive strategy in which embryo development and growth is temporarily arrested within the uterus to ensure the survival of neonates and mothers during unfavorable conditions. Pregnancy is reinitiated when conditions become favorable for neonatal survival. The mechanism of how the uterus enters diapause in various species remains unclear. Mice with uterine depletion of Foxa2, a transcription factor, are infertile. In this study, we show that dormant blastocysts are recovered from these mice on day 8 of pregnancy with persistent expression of uterine Msx1 , a gene critical to maintaining the uterine quiescent state, suggesting that these mice enter embryonic diapause...

There are three standard equivalent circuit models of solar cells in the literature-single-diode, double-diode, and triple-diode models. In this paper, first, a modified version of the single diode model, called the Improved Single Diode Model (ISDM), is presented. This modification is realized by adding resistance in series with the diode to enable better power loss dissipation representation. Second, the mathematical expression for the current-voltage relation of this circuit is derived in terms of Lambert's W function and solved by using the special trans function theory...

Coregulator proteins interact with signal-dependent transcription factors to modify their transcriptional activity. ZMIZ1 and ZMIZ2 (zinc finger MIZ-type containing 1 and 2) are coregulators with nonredundant functions that share unique structural characteristics. Among other interacting domains, they possess a MIZ (Msx-interacting zinc finger) that relates them to members of the protein inhibitor of activated STAT (PIAS) family and provides them the capacity to function as SUMO E3 ligases. The ZMIZ proteins stimulate the activity of various signaling pathways, including the androgen receptor (AR), P53, SMAD3/4, WNT/β-catenin, and NOTCH1 pathways, and interact with the BAF chromatin remodeling complex...

The glutamine synthetase (GS) expression system is commonly used to ensure stable transgene integration and amplification in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) host lines. Transfected cell populations are typically grown in the presence of the GS inhibitor, methionine sulfoximine (MSX), to further select for increased transgene copy number. However, high levels of GS activity produce excess glutamine. We hypothesized that attenuating the GS promoter while keeping the strong IgG promoter on the GS-IgG expression vector would result in a more efficient cellular metabolic phenotype...
