In healthcare the term "guideline" is used in numerous circumstances and for different purposes. The most commonly accepted definition is provided by the American Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, which defines guidelines as "recommendations developed in order to assist doctors and patients in the decision-making process, while choosing an appropriate assistance in specific clinical circumstances". At present, in Italy and foreign countries, guidelines are considered an effective tool. Guidelines contribute with a qualitative improvement in performances, standardizing healthcare criteria, enabling also rationalisation and optimisation in both human and economical resources...

This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of esophageal motor abnormalities, the incidence of gastroesophageal reflux, and the coexistence of gastroesophageal reflux with esophageal dysmotility in patients with intrinsic asthma. Based on clinical criteria, 34 consecutive asthmatics, 15 patients with gastroesophageal reflux, and 10 subjects with upper gastrointestinal symptoms with normal results of esophageal manometry and 24-hr esophageal pH test (controls) were studied. Esophageal motor disorders were noted in 23 of 34 asthmatics, and in 10 of 15 patients with acid reflux but in none of the subjects of the control group...

Three patients, undergoing surgery for pharyngeal carcinoma, were studied after their informed consence in the aim of ascertaining: 1) whether the routinary hemithyroidectomy in case of surgical treatment of the cancer of pyriform sinus is justified by a real probability of neoplastic invasion of the gland, and 2) which pathway the neoplasia follows in the metastatic process. In each patient a small amount of methylene blue solution was injected in the pyriform sinus submucosa, just before starting the surgical operation, currently including hemithyroidectomy...
