The interdialytic hypotension is still the most frequent complication during the hemodialysis. A-HFR has dynamic profiles of ultrafiltration and conductivity of the dialysate that ensure a better refilling and reduce compliance during the dialysis treatment, furthermore reduce the amino acid loss and has a lower inflammatory effect. In our Center, we wanted to analyze the impact of this kind of dialysis on intradialytic tolerance and nutritional status in two malnourished patients with encouraging data on the use of AHFR in malnutrition and disequilibrium syndromes...

INTRODUCTION: There are different strategies to analyse mortality in peritoneal dialysis (PD) with different definitions for case, event, time at risk, and statistical tests. A common method for the different registries would enable proper comparison to better understand the actual differences in mortality of our patients. METHODS: We review and describe the analysis strategies of regional, national and international registries. We include actuarial survival, Kaplan-Meier (KM) and competitive risk (CR) analyses...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is frequently used to replace glomerular filtration and to control acid-base, electrolyte and fluid disturbances in critically ill children with acute renal failure. However, cardiorespiratory changes can happen during this procedure. The objective of this review is to describe the PD cardio-respiratory repercutions in the pediatric patient and the evidence level of the studies that approach these repercutions. METHODS: Bibliographic revision about PD cardio-respiratory repercutions in the pediatric patient...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: There is currently no registry that gives a complete and overall view of the peritoneal dialysis (PD) situation in Spain. However, a report on PD in Spain was developed for various conferences and meetings over several years from data provided by each registry in the autonomous communities and regions. The main objective of this study is to analyse this data in aggregate and comparatively to obtain a representative sample of the Spanish population on PD in recent years, in order that analysis and results in terms of demographic data, penetration of the technique, geographical differences, incidence and prevalence, technical aspects, intermediate indicators, comorbidity, and outcomes such as patient and technique survival may be extrapolated to the whole country...

The Vascular Access Study Group of Italian Society of Nephrology has designed a National Register in order to create an archive that collects the data on vascular accesses more detailed than the mere indication of arteriovenous fistula with native vessels, prosthetic fistula and central venous catheter. The obstacles to such a project are represented by the absence of "uniformity" in the name of the arterovenous fistula, the difficulty in increasing the daily work of dialysis centers with another registry and finally by privacy concerns...

BACKGROUND: A significant increase in the number of patients starting chronic hemodialysis (HD) with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)≥10 mL/min/1.73 m(2) was observed in Argentina between 2004 and 2009. METHODS: In order to study this topic, we calculated the mortality hazard ratios (HR) in a cohort of incident HD individuals from the Argentine Registry of Chronic Dialysis [Registro Argentino de Diálisis Crónica] (2004-2009), grouped according to the initial eGFR (0-4...

INTRODUCTION: Peritonitis is one of the most common and severe complications associated with peritoneal dialysis (PD), constituting the primary cause of catheter loss and exit from the dialysis technique. The incidence and aetiology of peritonitis episodes vary based on geographical region, and change over time. For this reason, it is vital to maintain an updated understanding of the current risk factors and prognostic factors associated with peritonitis. METHOD: We performed an observational, multi-centre, prospective cohort study with a maximum follow-up period of 7 years (2003-2010), which included 1177 patients and a total of 476 first episodes of peritonitis (total: 1091 cases of peritonitis)...

Patients with diabetic nephropathy comprise up to 30% of dialisis population. The treatment optimum for these patients remains the transplantation of pancreas and kidney. There were no successful attempts in Russia so long ago as the end of the previous century. The issue analyses the experience of the SCS (where the first successful transplantation of kidney-pancreas complex was conducted) and other Russian institutes, where the problem is elaborated. Flaws and advantages of the used operative methods of pancreas and Β-cells transplantation; early and long-term results are thoroughly discussed...

This paper reports the analysis of the second part of the data obtained from the second SIN census and illustrates the management model of the Italian dialysis centers, highlighting its strengths but also its limits. The census was carried out between March and December 2008 with a webbased survey using fillable PDF forms. The survey was validated by comparing the data with those sent to the Italian Dialysis and Transplant Register (Registro Italiano di Dialisi e Trapianti, RIDT) and hence it refers to December 31, 2008, the date of the last RIDT report...

Despite significant advances in hemodialysis (HD) and medical therapy, mortality rates in patients with chronic kidney disease stage 5 (CKD-5D) remain unacceptably high, with cardiovascular (CV) mortality risk in dialysis patients being several times higher than that of a general population. The CV mortality risk of a 25-to 34-year-old dialysis patient is approximately the same as the one of an otherwise healthy person aged over 85 in the general population. HD patients are not only exposed to the various traditional risk factors valid for the general population but in addition also to the non-traditional risk factors resulting either from uremia per se or from the dialysis treatment...
