Tridax procumbens (cotton buttons) is a flowering plant with a medicinal reputation for treating infections, wounds, diabetes, and liver and kidney diseases. The present research was conducted to evaluate the possible protective effects of the T. procumbens methanolic extract (TPME) on an experimentally induced type 2 diabetes rat model. Wistar rats with streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes were randomly allocated into five groups of five animals each, viz., a normal glycemic group (I), diabetic rats receiving distilled water group (II), diabetic rats with 150 (III) and 300 mg/kg of TPME (IV) groups, and diabetic rats with 100 mg/kg metformin group (V)...

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have uncovered that hyperuricemia (HUA) leads to cognitive deficits, which are accompanied by neuronal damage and neuroinflammation. Here, we aim to explore the role of methyltransferase-like 3 (METTL3) in HUA-mediated neuronal apoptosis and microglial inflammation. METHODS: A HUA mouse model was constructed. The spatial memory ability of the mice was assessed by the Morris water maze experiment (MWM), and neuronal apoptosis was analyzed by the TdT-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay...

BACKGROUND: Essential tremor (ET) is one of the most common movement disorders. The clinical heterogeneity of ET has been studied for many years, however, there are practically no comprehensive studies dedicated to the assessment of biochemical and electrophysiological parameters associated with the severity of motor and non-motor disorders present in patients with ET and taking into account their heterogeneity. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this report is to differentiate subgroups of essential tremor using cluster analysis of clinical, biochemical and electrophysiological parameters...

BACKGROUND: Excessive oxidative stress may contribute to neurodegeneration by leading to protein aggregation and mitochondrial dysfunction. Uric acid (UA) is an important endogenous antioxidant that protects against oxidative stress, yet its exact role in neurodegeneration remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To explore the performance of serum UA in neurodegenerative disorders. METHODS: A total of 839 controls and 840 patients, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), multiple system atrophy (MSA), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), motor neuron disease (MND), Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), and mixed dementia (MixD) were enrolled...

Background: Associations between serum uric acid (SUA) and changes in cognitive function are understudied in non-normotensive populations, and many previous studies only considered the baseline SUA at a single time point. We aimed to examine the effects of baseline SUA and 4-year changes in SUA on cognitive changes in the non-normotensive population. Materials and methods: In the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), cognitive function was measured based on executive function and episodic memory in four visits (years: 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2018)...

Serum uric acid (UA) has been suggested to be correlated with outcomes after stroke. We performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the association between serum UA and post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Relevant observational studies were identified by search of electronic databases including PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science. A randomized-effect model incorporating the possible between-study heterogeneity was used to pool the results. Overall, eleven studies with 4246 patients of AIS were included, 2073 (48...

Uric acid is commonly known for its bad reputation. However, it has been shown that uric acid may be actively involved in neurotoxicity and/or neuroprotection. These effects could be caused by oxidative stress or inflammatory processes localized in the central nervous system, but also by other somatic diseases or systemic conditions. Our interest was to summarize and link the current data on the possible role of uric acid in cognitive functioning. We also focused on the two putative molecular mechanisms related to the pathological effects of uric acid-oxidative stress and inflammatory processes...

This study aimed to explore the mechanism of fucoidan in chronic kidney disease (CKD)-triggered cognitive dysfunction. The adenine-induced ICR strain CKD mice model was applied, and RNA-Seq was performed for differential gene analysis between aged-CKD and normal mice. As a result, fucoidan (100 and 200 mg kg-1 ) significantly reversed adenine-induced high expression of urea, uric acid in urine, and creatinine in serum, as well as the novel object recognition memory and spatial memory deficits. RNA sequencing analysis indicated that oxidative and inflammatory signaling were involved in adenine-induced kidney injury and cognitive dysfunction; furthermore, fucoidan inhibited oxidative stress via GSK3β-Nrf2-HO-1 signaling and ameliorated inflammatory response through regulation of microglia/macrophage polarization in the kidney and hippocampus of CKD mice...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Oxidative stress has been associated as an essential contributor to the development of neurodegenerative diseases. Recent developments in the field of Parkinson's Disease (PD) pathophysiology have led to a renewed interest in this field. As an antioxidant, uric acid (UA) has arisen as a potential neuroprotectant. Higher concentrations of UA are linked to reducing the risk of the development of the disease and preventing its progression. However, the expositions are unsatisfactory because the outcomes of these reports have not been consistent...

BACKGROUND: Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), albuminuria and serum uric acid (SUA) are markers of kidney function that have been associated with cognitive ability. However, whether these associations are causal is unclear. METHODS: We performed one-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) to estimate the effects of kidney function markers on cognitive performance using data from the UK Biobank. Polygenic scores for SUA, urine albumin to creatinine ratio (ACR), estimated glomerular filtration rate based on serum creatinine (eGFRcre) and serum cystatin C (eGFRcys) were used as instrumental variables, and cognitive function outcomes included tests of verbal-numeric reasoning, reaction time, visual memory, and numeric memory...

Dopamine (DA) is an important neurotransmitter, which is created and released from the central nervous system. It plays a crucial role in human activities, like cognition, emotions, and response to anything. Maladjustment of DA in human blood serum results in different neural diseases, like Parkinson's and Schizophrenia. Consequently, researchers have started working on DA detection in blood serum, which is undoubtedly a hot research area. Electrochemical sensing techniques are more promising to detect DA in real samples...
