Identifying the spatiotemporal distributions and phenotypic characteristics of understory saplings is beneficial in exploring the internal mechanisms of plant regeneration and providing technical assistances for continues cover forest management. However, it is challenging to detect the understory saplings using 2-dimensional (2D) spectral information produced by conventional optical remotely sensed data. This study proposed an automatic method to detect the regenerated understory saplings based on the 3D structural information from aerial laser scanning (ALS) data...

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to assess some parameters of right ventricle (RV) function as predictors of short-term mortality in patients with severe secondary mitral regurgitation (SMR) after mitral valve surgery. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 112 consecutive patients with severe SMR who had undergone mitral valve repair or replacement with or without concomitant coronary artery bypass surgery. We assessed RV to pulmonary artery coupling by calculating the ratio of tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) to non-invasively estimated RV systolic pressure (RVSP)...

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Healthcare workers (HCWs) are considered a high-risk group for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) exposure, ascribed to the amount of time they spend in health-care facilities (HCFs). This study aimed to assess HCWs' compliance with Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) procedures and the risk of exposure during the early period of the pandemic in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted from June to September 2020...

This work researches the resilent mixed H∞ and energy-to-peak filter design problem of switched Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy systems with asynchronous switching and multiple state impulsive jumps. The novelties include three points. First, a novel mixed H∞ and energy-to-peak performance index is proposed, which covers the H∞ performance index and energy-to-peak performance index as special cases. Second, in addition to designing the switching filters, the filter state jump rules are constructed at filter switching instants...

Background. This experimental study sought to assess the biocompatibility of Resil, an experimental epoxy resin-based sealer, in comparison with AH26 and AH-Plus sealers in rats. Methods. Twelve male Wistar rats weighing 400 to 500 grams were evaluated in this experimental study. Four polyethylene tubes containing Resil, AH-Plus, AH26 sealers, and an empty tube were implanted subcutaneously in rats. The degree of inflammation, type of inflammatory cells present, foreign body reaction, quality of connective tissue, and presence of fibrotic capsule were evaluated histopathologically at 7 and 30 days after implanting the tubes to assess the biocompatibility of sealers...

Latinx immigrants bear a disproportionate burden associated with intimate partner violence (IPV); however, efforts to develop evidence-based IPV prevention strategies and address health disparities have been impeded by a lack of understanding of the unique cultural (i.e., acculturation and acculturative stress) and socio-environmental (i.e., adverse childhood experiences [ACEs]) factors that contribute to IPV in this historically marginalized population. Guided by a contextual framework for IPV and a life-course perspective viewed through a gendered lens, this study aims to (a) identify relationships among acculturation, acculturative stress, ACEs, and IPV victimization and perpetration; and (b) explore whether profiles of IPV risk factors differ by gender (women vs...

Citrate-based thermoset bioelastomer has numerous tissue engineering applications. However, its insoluble and unmeltable features restricted processing techniques for fabricating complex scaffolds. Herein, direct ink writing (DIW) was explored for 3D printing of poly(1, 8-octanediol-co-Pluronic F127 citrate) (POFC) bioelastomer scaffolds considering that POFC prepolymer (pre-POFC) was waterborne and could form a stable emulsion. The pre-POFC emulsion couldn't be printed, however, chitin nanocrystal (ChiNC) could be as a rheological modifier to tune the flow behavior of pre-POFC emulsion, and thus DIW printing of POFC scaffolds was successfully realized; moreover, ChiNC was also as a supporting agent to prevent collapse of filaments during thermocuring, and simultaneously as a biobased nanofiller to reinforce scaffolds...

Intestinal mucositis remains one of the most debilitating side effects related to chemotherapy. The onset and persistence of mucositis is an intricate physiological process involving cross-communication between the specific chemotherapeutic drug, the immune system, and gut microbes that results in a loss of mucosal integrity leading to gut-barrier dysfunction. Intestinal mucositis has a severe impact on a patient's quality of life and negatively influences the outcome of treatment. Most importantly, intestinal mucositis is a major contributor to the decreased survival rates and early onset of death associated with certain chemotherapy treatments...

Previous positive interactions with humans may ameliorate the stress response of farm animals to aversive routine practices such as painful or stressful procedures, particularly those associated with stockpeople. We studied the effects of positive handling by providing younger (parity 1-2) and older (parity 3-8) sows housed in pens of fifteen ( n = 24 pens in total) with either positive human contact (+HC) or routine human contact (control) during gestation. The +HC treatment involved a familiar stockperson patting and scratching sows and was imposed at a pen-level for 2 min daily...

Under the banner of a "New Green Revolution for Africa," agricultural intensification programs aim to make smallholder agriculture more productive as well as "climate smart". As with Green Revolutions in Asia and Mexico, agricultural innovations (hybrid seeds, agronomic engineering, market linkages, and increased use of fertilizer and pesticides) are promoted as essential catalysts of agriculture-led economic growth. Intensification programs are now frequently linked to Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA), which attempts to build resilience and reduce greenhouse gas emissions while increasing crop yields...

BACKGROUND: In studies on cardiac arrest (CA)/resuscitation (R) injury, Purkinje cell degeneration was described, however, with inconsistent data concerning severity and time point of manifestation. Moreover, CA/R studies paid only limited attention to inhibitory stellate interneurons. To this aim, the hypothesis that cerebellar could be relatively resilient toward CA/R because of diverse cellular defense mechanisms including interaction with stellate cells was tested. METHODS: We examined rats with survival times of 6, 24, and 48 h, and 7 and 21 days in comparison with sham- and nonoperated animals...
