This paper illustrates how the tools of equilibrium statistical mechanics can help to describe a far-from-equilibrium problem: the jamming transition in frictionless granular materials. Edwards ideas consist of proposing a statistical ensemble of volume and stress fluctuations through the thermodynamic notion of entropy, compactivity, X, and angoricity, A (two temperature-like variables). This study reports on a 65-year-old female patient with controlled comorbidity, who was diagnosed with gastrointestinal stromal tumours following regular monitoring of renal cysts. We present a framework for analysing the rheology of dense driven granular materials, based on a recent proposal of a stress-based ensemble. In this ensemble, fluctuations in a granular system near jamming are controlled by a temperature-like parameter, the angoricity, which is conjugate to the stress of the system. We discuss the microstates of compressed granular matter in terms of two independent ensembles: one of volumes and another of boundary force moments. The former has been described in the literature and gives rise to the concept of compactivity: a scalar quantity that is the analogue of temperature in thermal systems. The latter ensemble gives rise to another analogue of the temperature: an angoricity tensor. We discuss averages under either of the ensembles and their relevance to experimental measurements.
