OBJECTIVE: to identify the model, average length of stay on site and complications of central venous catheter in patients undergoing transplant of hematopoietic stem cells and verify the corresponding relationship between the variables: age, gender, medical diagnosis, type of transplant, implanted catheter and insertion site. METHOD: a retrospective and quantitative study with a sample of 188 patients transplanted records between 2007 and 2011. RESULTS: the majority of patients used Hickman catheter with an average length of stay on site of 47...

BACKGROUND: The stellate ganglion (SG) is important for cardiac autonomic control. SG modification is an option for treating refractory ventricular tachyarrhythmias. The optimal extent of left- and right-sided SG denervation necessary for antiarrhythmic effect, however, remains to be learned. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of stepwise SG denervation on hemodynamic and electrophysiological parameters in dogs. METHODS: After sequential left and right thoracotomy in 8 healthy dogs, the SG was exposed by dissection...

INTRODUCTION: The frozen elephant trunk (FET) technique enables combined aortic arch and descending aortic repair. We report our experience with a modified arch replacement technique by rerouting of the left subclavian artery (LSA) and fixation of the FET in Zone 2 or proximally under selective perfusion of all three arch arteries and the downstream aorta. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From January 2005 to December 2014, 78 of 173 patients operated with the FET technique underwent rerouting of the LSA...

INTRODUCTION: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a gradually reduction in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) caused by destruction of a large number of nephrons. Kidney failure is the final stage of CKD with GFR <15ml/min/1.73m(2) or requiring dialysis. Patients must provide vascular access, which is also the "life line" and "Achilles heel" of hemodialysis treatment. AIM: The purpose of this research is to show the demographic structure of the hemodialysis center in Konjic, and also demonstrate the impact of vascular access to the adequacy and the outcome of dialysis treatment...

PURPOSE: To investigate the influence of prior high intensity double poling (DP) on physiological and biomechanical responses during subsequent diagonal stride (DIA). METHODS: Eight well-trained male cross-country skiers (age 22 ± 3 yr; VO2max 69 ± 3 ml · kg(-1) · min(-1)) roller-skied on a treadmill sequentially for 3 min at 90% DIA VO2max (DIA1), 3 min at 90% DP VO2peak and 3 min at 90% DIA VO2max (DIA2). Cardio-respiratory responses were monitored continuously and gases and metabolites in blood from the a...

BACKGROUND: Reliable central venous access (CVC) is essential for hematology-oncology patients since frequent puncture of peripheral veins-e.g., for chemotherapy, antibiotic administration, repeated blood sampling, and monitoring-can cause unacceptable pain and psychological trauma, as well as severe side effects in cases of extravasation of chemotherapy drugs. However, CVC lines still carry major risk factors, including thrombosis, infection (e.g., entry site, tunnel, and luminal infections), and catheter dislocation, leakage, or breakage...

BACKGROUND: Primary upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (UEDVT) can be divided into idiopathic and effort thrombosis. Anatomical factors probably play an important role in effort thrombosis, whereas the cause remains mostly unknown in idiopathic thrombosis. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this study was to examine the anatomy of the subclavian region and evaluate how these factors contribute to primary UEDVT. The secondary objective was to investigate if venous compression correlates with post thrombotic syndrome (PTS)...

BACKGROUND: Implantable venous access ports are essential for patients requiring chronic venous access. The aim of this study was to determine securities, risks of complications and patients' satisfaction with using a port system. METHODS: Between April 2008 and May 2013, 220 consecutive patients (mean age: 53 ± 12 years; 155 female) were enrolled into this observational, single-centre study. 65 patients who received a port system were asked to complete a questionnaire with the aim of evaluating the patient's satisfaction and quality of life...

In failing Fontan circulation, the elevated central venous pressure increases lymphatic production and simultaneously retards lymphatic return to the central venous system, thus unbalancing lymphatic homoeostasis. To improve lymphatic drainage, a new concept based on decompression of the thoracic duct to the lower pressure levels of the common atrium, with concomitant increase of preload, has been developed. The thoracic duct, which in the majority of patients enters the circulation at the left subclavia-jugular junction, is decompressed by diverting the innominate vein directly to the common atrium...

BACKGROUND: Behçet's disease is an autoimmune, systemic vasculitis disease that is characterized by oral aphthous and genital ulcerations and ocular lesions. Vascular manifestations in the form of aneurysms are the main predictors of mortality and morbidity in such cases. Normally, these aneurysms are located in the pulmonary arteries, the aorta, carotid, subclavia, and the femoropopliteal sector. Open surgery presents a maximum complication rate of 50%, principally in the form of anastomotic pseudoaneurysms...

Although transvenous pacing is a safe treatment modality for bradyarrhythmias, serious thrombotic and embolic complications are reported to occur in 0.6-3.5% of cases. We describe a case of pacemaker-associated thrombosis, with an axillary and subclavia veins thrombosis. The patient was treated with subcutaneous heparin which proved successful as the sole treatment.

The Tikhoff-Linberg procedure represents one of the possibilities for treatment of extensive bone and soft tissue tumors in the shoulder region, and is a limb saving alternative to interscapulothoracic amputation. This procedure includes a resection of the proximal part of the humerus, a total scapulectomy, and a total or partial excision of the clavicula. The authors operated by this method in a time period of 26 years on eight patients. The diagnoses of operated bone tumors were three osteosarcomas, three chondrosarcomas, one fibrosarcoma and one clinically solitary metastasis...

The aim of this study was to verify whether experimentally induced total cerebral ischemia in rabbits actually corresponds to total ischemia on the basis of the origin of certain vessels. We observed morphological variations in the origin and course of the arteria vertebralis as one of the vessels supplying the brain with blood. Investigations were carried out on 50 adult New Zealand rabbits. We prepared corrosion casts of the arterial system using Duracryl Dental. We found that in 86% of cases (43 animals) the arteria vertebralis sinistra originated directly from the arteria subclavia sinistra, in 10% of cases (5 animals) it originated from the arcus aortae as an independent branch, and in 4% of cases (2 animals) it arose from the arcus aortae as a common trunk with the arteria scapularis descendens...

D-dimer is often used to exclude deep venous thrombosis, primarily in the lower extremities. We describe a 38-year-old man who had deep venous thrombosis in the left vena subclavia in spite of a normal D-dimer. Only one inconclusive survey compares the value of D-dimer and upper extremity deep venous thrombosis. We conclude that where deep venous thrombosis of the upper extremities is suspected, you cannot rely on the D-dimer value, but should examine the patient using other modalities such as colour Doppler ultrasound...
