OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate positive pulmonary artery remodeling after balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA) in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). DESIGN AND METHOD: A 68-year old female was admitted to pulmonary hypertension department with swelling of the feet and legs, low level of arterial blood saturation (92%). She passed two episodes of pulmonary embolism - 7 and 5 years before the hospitalization. The patient was treated with anticoagulants (warfarin), diuretics (furosemide, spironolactone)...

The kidney is an organ that maintains the body's sodium and water balance and plays a significant role in blood pressure regulation. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and a progressive loss of its function, among others, leads to sodium and water retention and, as a consequence, to arterial hypertension. The supply of salt and fluids delivered with the diet significantly affects the cardiovascular system's functioning particularly in hemodialysis patients. The critical element in clinical care is maintaining appropriate water and electrolyte homeostasis...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Alterations of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system have been proposed as precursors of the genesis and perpetuation of atherosclerosis for a long time. The objective of this study is to determine if there is an association between the presence of carotid atherosclerosis and the reduction in heart rate variability. METHODS: Using a prospective case-control design, the heart rate variability and the presence of carotid atherosclerosis was investigated in 54 patients, divided into 2groups according to the presence or absence of carotid atherosclerosis...

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the degree of lipidic control before the first cardiovascular accident in population attended during 2013 at Primary Care. To analyze the distribution of these events depending on control intervals of cholesterol LDL (LDL-chol), cholesterol HDL (HDL-chol) and triglycerides (TG). METHOD: A multicentric cross-sectional, descriptive study on above 18-year-old people attended at the centres of the Primari Care Service (PCS) Baix Llobregat Nord, who had suffered a first cardiac or cerebral ischemic attack from 01/01/2013 to 31/12/2013...

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric cardiac arrest is an uncommon but critical life-threatening event requiring effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation. High-quality cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is essential, but is poorly performed, even by highly skilled healthcare providers. The recently described two-thumb chest compression technique (nTTT) consists of the two thumbs directed at the angle of 90° to the chest while having the fingers fist-clenched. This technique might facilitate adequate chest-compression depth, chest-compression rate and rate of full chest-pressure relief...

Background. We investigated the efficacy of intra - articular bupivacaine with morphine administration after knee joint arthroscopy.
Material and methods. The present study compared intra- arthicular bupivacaine with intra-arthricular morphine for postoperative analgesia in 56 patients (21 women, 35 men) (age 20-70, mean 39.8) undergoing knee joint arthroscopy.
Intraoperatively, the patients received anaesthesia spinaly (0.5 % Marcaine spinal ASTRA) and immediately following surgery received 10 ml intra-arthricular injection consisting either of 0...

BACKGROUND/AIM: Diabetes mellitus is associated with an increased risk for neonatal morbidity and mortality. One of the most important goals in treating pregnancies complicated with diabetes is keeping glucose level within the normal range, especially in the first trimester. A portable insulin pump for continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) represents the best form of therapy for patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus during pregnancy. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effects of therapy with a portable insulin pump for continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion during the first trimester of pregnancy on the quality of glycoregulation and pregnancy outcome in women with type 1 diabetes mellitus...

The immediate effects of pulmonary vascular engorgement (PVE) on lung and chest wall mechanics were studied in anesthetized, paralyzed dogs with the chest wall intact. A balloon-tipped catheter advanced retrograde into the left atrium was used to produce partial mitral valve obstruction and increases in pulmonary artery and left atrial preassures equal to 15 and 20 cm H2O, respectively. This increased pulmonary blood volume (PBV) by 50% and reduced dynamic lung ocmplicance 14%. With the airway occluded at different lung volumes, transient PVE produced a 6% decrease in compliance on the deflation limb of the pressure volume curve of the lung and a shift in the chest wall pressure-volume curve, which was consistent with an increase in chest wall volume equal to the increase in PBV...

Eleven patients with previously untreated glaucoma of one eye were given metoprolol, 50 mg x 3 for one day. Intraocular pressure (IOP) and heart rate were significantly reduced during treatment, and increased after withdrawal of the drug. In the eyes with glaucoma, the mean IOP was reduced from 30.1 to 20.6 mmHg during treatment. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures were also reduced during treatment, but stayed at the same level after withdrawal of the drug. It is concluded that at least part of the reductions observed for IOP and heart rate are drug-induced, while the effect on blood preassure is mainly induced by factors other than the drug...
