Protein glycation with sugars such as glucose start by the initial reaction between the carbonyl group of sugars and the amino group of proteins such as albumin and hemoglobin. This leads to the generation of Schiff base and following that the amadori and advanced glycation end products (AGEs). AGEs products can store in tissues and blood of diabetic patients. So, they play key roles to generate free radicals, which cause the development of diabetes complications. Inhibition of protein glycation plays an important role in controlling diabetes, so the identification of anti-glycation compounds is now receiving considerable interest...

Thymoquinone, a major ingredient of black seed oil (Nigella sativa), has been shown to exhibit anticancer capacity in various types of cancers. However, there are few studies concerning the correlation between thymoquinone and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in prostate cancer. In the present study, we firstly found that thymoquinone showed antimetastatic capacity in prostate cancer DU145 and PC3 cells. Additionally, thymoquinone reversed EMT by increasing E-cadherin expression and decreasing vimentin and Slug expression in a concentration-dependent manner...

Thymoquinone, a natural occurring quinone and the main bioactive component of plant Nigella sativa, undergoes intracellular redox cycling and re-oxidizes NADH to NAD+. TQ administration (20 mg/kg/bw/day) to the Diet-Induced Obesity (DIO) mice reduced their diabetic phenotype by decreasing fasting blood glucose and fasting insulin levels, and improved glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity as evaluated by oral glucose and insulin tolerance tests (OGTT and ITT). Furthermore, TQ decreased serum cholesterol levels and liver triglycerides, increased protein expression of phosphorylated Akt, decreased serum levels of inflammatory markers resistin and MCP-1, and decreased NADH/NAD+ ratio...

The rationale of the current study was to investigate whether the inverse association between vitamin D deficiency and parathyroid hormone levels is age-dependent and whether it has any role in modulating renal function and insulin resistance. To test this hypothesis, we have carried out a hospital based study enrolling 848 subjects (558 men and 290 women) with the mean age of 50.9±15.9 y. Vitamin D deficiency was predominant irrespective of age group (p=0.21) and gender (p=0.12). An inverse association between vitamin D and PTH was observed (r= -0...

Though the causes of Alzheimer's disease (AD) are yet to be understood, much evidence has suggested that excessive amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation due to abnormal amyloid-β precursor protein (APP) processing and Aβ metabolism are crucial processes towards AD pathogenesis. Hence, approaches aiming at APP processing and Aβ metabolism are currently being actively pursued for the management of AD. Studies suggest that high cholesterol and a high fat diet have harmful effects on cognitive function and may instigate the commencement of AD pathogenesis...
