In contrast to wild type bovine viral diarhea virus (BVDV) specific double deletion mutants are not able to establish persistent infection upon infection of a pregnant heifer. Our data shows that this finding results from a defect in transfer of the virus from the mother animal to the fetus. Pregnant heifers were inoculated with such a double deletion mutant or the parental wild type virus and slaughtered pairwise on days 6, 9, 10 and 13 post infection. Viral RNA was detected via qRT-PCR and RNAscope analyses in maternal tissues for both viruses from day 6 p...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical severity of diarrhoea associated to viral co-infection in children with acute gastroenteritis. METHODS: About 461 children under five years hospitalised with acute diarrhoea (266 males and 187 females) were enrolled in the study. Using stool samples, rotavirus and adenovirus infections were investigated by ELISA, and norovirus infections by nested duplex RT-PCR. We assessed social, demographic, clinical and behavioural conditions that might influence the occurrence of rotavirus, adenovirus and norovirus infections...

Colonic polyps are usually asymptomatic, and are commonly detected during screening colonoscopy. Severe hypokalemia secondary to secretory diarrhea is a rare presentation of rectal polyps. We present a 70 years old female with hypokalemia and acute kidney injury secondary to secretory diarhea due to moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma of rectum, all of which is syndromically sometimes referred to as McKittrick and Wheelock syndrome. The case is presented because McKittrick-Wheelock syndrome is still more uncommon with malignancy...

Various plant species are used globally for therapeutic purposes and have been authenticated by the World Health Organization. Aegle marmelos (L.) Corr., one of only three species in the genus Aegle, is a subtropical, fruit-bearing, deciduous tree that grows throughout the hills and plains of sub-Himalayan countries. Plants with medicinal importance have been used in almost every culture since ancient times. Various studies are underway to understand more about the qualities and components of medicinal plants, including drug preparation, phytochemical analysis, cultivation, toxicology, and pharmacology...

Guanylin and uroguanylin are short peptides homologous to heat-stable enterotoxins of Escherichia coli and other enteric bacteria. Guanylin and uroguanylin are synthetized from the respective prepropeptides mainly in gastrointestinal mucosa and are secreted both into intestinal lumen and into the blood. Luminally secreted peptides stimulate chloride and bicarbonate secretion in the intestine through the mechanism involving guanylate cyclase C receptor, cyclic GMP, protein kinase G and cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) chloride channel...

Fecal specimens were collected from 102 outpatients with diarrhea in Children's Hospital from March to October, 1997. The fecal smears were examined for cryptosporozoites with the rapid modified acid-fast two-step methods. The positive rate was 4.90%(5/102). There was no significant difference between female and male (P > 0.05). The positive rates of 1-month-, 5-year-, and 10-year-old groups were 4.05% (3/74), 7.14%(1/14), and 7.14(1/14), respectively. We conclude that there is crytosporidium infection in child patients with diarrhea in different sex and age groups...

The toxicity of sodium selenite was studied in 28 Nubian goats, 20 of which died or were killed in extremis 2 h to 21 d after dosing. Single or repeated daily oral doses of 160, 80, 40, 20 and 5 mg sodium selenite/kg were toxic to goats while daily doses of selenite ranging from 0.25 to 1 mg/kg/d for 225 d were not toxic to this species of animals. The main signs of poisoning were uneasiness, inappetence, dyspnea, salivation, diarhea, paresis of the hind limbs, arching of the back, and recumbency. The main lesions were hemorrhages in the rumen, reticulum, osmasum and abomasum, hemorrhagic or catarrhal abomasitis and enteritis, fatty change and necrosis of the centrilobular hepatocytes and of the cells of the renal convoluted tubules, splenic hemosiderosis, pulmonary congestion, haemorrhage, edema and emphysema, accumulation of lymphocytes in the vital organs, and straw-colored fluid in the serous cavities...

Obese people, more than 45 kg above their ideal weight, can be treated by an intestinal by-pass. This operation must be reserved for patients where conservative treatment failed, where there is no organic origin, and given the operative risk be not increased by underlying serious disease. Good pre- and postoperative collaboration of the patient together with clinical and biological controls are essential. The operation consists of an end-to-side jejuno-ileostomy with proximal suture of the blind loops; or an end-to-end jejuno-ileostomy with implantation of the blind loops in the colon...

The initial tumor was on the posterior wall of rectum, but was necrosed : bone metastasing chemodectoma, or locally invading carcinoid ? This new complex paraneoplastic disease seems to be associated with APUD tumor...
