BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Genital warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), whose genotypes have traditionally been classified as low risk or high risk (oncogenic). The first 2 prophylactic vaccines included the most common genotypes at the time: HPV-6, HPV-11, HPV-16, and HPV-18. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of HPV types in our setting 10 years after the introduction of HPV vaccines. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Descriptive, observational, retrospective study of patients diagnosed with genital warts at the sexually transmitted infection unit of a dermatology department between January 2016 and June 2019...

Background: This study estimated genital warts prevalence, genital-warts-related healthcare resource use and costs, and self-reported human-papillomavirus-related psychosocial impact among male and female patients aged 18-60 years in the Philippines. Methods: Prevalence was estimated using daily logs numbering genital warts patients treated by participating physicians in 4 Philippine regions over a 5-week period (09JUL2011-24SEP2012). Physicians also completed a survey assessing patient referral patterns, healthcare resource use, treatment, and follow-up care...

OBJECTIVES: To estimate self-reported human papillomavirus (HPV) disease-related psychosocial impact among male and female patients in South Korea. DESIGN: In this multicentre cross-sectional study, psychosocial impacts were estimated using a one-time survey capturing HPV Impact Profile (HIP) results, CuestionarioEspecifico en Condilomas Acuminados (CECA; in Spanish)-'Specific questionnaire for Condylomata Acuminata' and the EuroQol-5 Dimension (EQ-5D) surveys. Student's t-tests or Mann-Whitney U tests were used for continuous comparisons; χ2 or Fisher's exact tests were applied for categorical comparisons...

The prevalence of genital warts (GW) and self-reported human papillomavirus (HPV) as well as disease-related psychosocial impact among male and female patients aged 18-60 years in India were assessed. GW prevalence was estimated using a 2-week daily log of patients examined from June 7-September 22, 2011 by 200 participating physicians in 6 regions of India. Psychosocial impact was estimated using one-time, self-administered surveys, including HPV Impact Profile (HIP), Cuestionario Específico para Condiloma Acuminado ([Spanish] CECA; "Specific questionnaire for Condylomata Acuminata") and EuroQol-5 Dimension survey...

BACKGROUND: Data on the psychosocial burden of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related diseases other than cervical cancer are scarce. The objectives of this study were to measure and compare the psychosocial burden and the impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of HPV-related lower genital tract diseases and genital warts (GW) using several generic and disease-specific instruments. METHODS: Overall, 842 individuals with normal cervical cytology (n = 241), borderline nuclear abnormalities and/or mild dyskaryosis (n = 23), cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN)1 (n = 84), CIN2/3 (n = 203), vulval intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN)2/3 (n = 43), GW (n = 186) and a history of GW (non-current) (n = 62) were included...

Condyloma acuminatum (CA) is a sexually transmitted disease caused by human papilloma virus (HPV). Infection with HPV is a major risk factor for development of anal squamous cell carcinoma. In clinical practice, it is frequently limited to the perianal skin or anal canal and it is rarely described a rectal mucosal extension. Several therapeutic options are developed for CA, including chemical or physical destruction, immunological therapy, or a surgical excision. However, these treatments still have some degree of limitations and important side effects compromising patient compliance and reducing treatment efficacy...

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is sexually transmitted, but the nature of the infection in males is poorly understood. We sought to identify determinants of HPV infection, acquisition, and persistence in 1,030 healthy military men in Mexico. METHODS: From July 2000 to July 2003, trained interviewers administered a questionnaire, conducted a genital examination, and collected samples. The presence of multiple HPV types in genital cells from the urethra, urethral meatus, scrotum, penile shaft, and coronal sulcus was evaluated...

REVIEW

The Papillomaviruses are DNA viruses which belong to the Papova family, having a great affinity for epithelial tissue. They can produce proliferative lesions either in the skin or mucosa, in man and other animals. Various kinds of lesions, mainly benign, are caused by numerous types of HPV involving the well-known verruca vulgaris, oral papilloma, condiloma acuminatum and the focal epithelial hyperplasia, as well as a possible association with other alterations and lesions.
