We present a woman aged 50 years who underwent a Tru-cut biopsy for a BI-RADS 4 lesion on her right breast and received a histopathology diagnosis of a fibroadenoma. In her one year follow-up, the lesion had progressed and she underwent an excisional biopsy. Her final diagnosis was a periductal stromal tumor. Periductal stromal tumor is an extremely rare and different entity from phylloides tumor, which makes appropriate diagnosis difficult in Tru-cut biopsy and care should be taken. Lesion progression of should require a re-biopsy...

Introduction We studied the extent to which an ultrasound-guided vacuum-assisted biopsy device ("hand-held Mammotome") could be used not only as a valuable tool for investigation of suspicious breast lesions, but also therapeutically for the complete removal of breast fibroadenomas. Materials and Methods 132 aspiration biopsies showing fibroadenoma on histology were collected retrospectively. We ascertained whether there were residual findings on breast ultrasound at a median follow-up of approx. 9 months following biopsy...

This paper proposes a texture analysis technique that can effectively classify different types of human breast tissue imaged by Optical Coherence Microscopy (OCM). OCM is an emerging imaging modality for rapid tissue screening and has the potential to provide high resolution microscopic images that approach those of histology. OCM images, acquired without tissue staining, however, pose unique challenges to image analysis and pattern classification. We examined multiple types of texture features and found Local Binary Pattern (LBP) features to perform better in classifying tissues imaged by OCM...

Fine needle aspirations (FNA) of the breast for primary diagnoses have become less popular in the USA and are usually performed for lesions with low or extremely high clinical suspicion. They are also performed for lesions in close proximity to a breast implant. Liquid-based cytological preparations, such as ThinPrep(®) (TP), provide a practical alternative to clinicians who are performing FNA. Using a selection of cases that represent challenging diagnoses, we describe common diagnostic pitfalls of breast FNA that are specifically associated with this preparation...

Fibroepithelial lesions (FELs) are the most frequent breast tumors in adolescent females. The pubertal hormonal surge could impact the growth and microscopic appearance of FELs in this age group. In this study, we evaluate the morphology and clinical behavior of FELs in adolescents. We searched the 1992-2012 pathology data base for FELs in females 18 years old or younger (F ≤18 years). Seven FELs from 1975 to 1983 were also included. Three pathologists reviewed all available material. Patient (pt) characteristics and follow-up information were obtained from electronic medical records...

INTRODUCTION: Fibroepithelial tumours are a heterogeneous group of biphasic neoplasms consisting of a proliferation of both epithelial and stromal components. Fibroadenoma (FA) and Phyllodes Tumour (PT) constitute the major entities. It is crucial to distinguish benign from borderline PT (low grade malignant PT), because the former do not metastasize, have a lesser risk of local recurrence and initial local recurrences are histologically benign in almost all instances. Multiple Immunohistochemical (IHC) markers are being studied to find their utility in grading the PT accurately for planning proper treatment...

On the basis of results of our previous studies and the findings of other scholars, the most common histologic type of false-positive diagnosis with strain elastography (SE) was papilloma. The objectives of our study were to evaluate whether SE could contribute to conventional ultrasound differentiation between benign and malignant papillary lesions and between papillary lesions and other common benign breast lesions. Data on 89 papillary lesions at our hospital, including 74 benign and 15 malignant papillary lesions, were included in our study...

High-resolution tactile imaging, superior to the sense of touch, has potential for future biomedical applications such as robotic surgery. In this paper, we propose a tactile imaging method, termed computational optical palpation, based on measuring the change in thickness of a thin, compliant layer with optical coherence tomography and calculating tactile stress using finite-element analysis. We demonstrate our method on test targets and on freshly excised human breast fibroadenoma, demonstrating a resolution of up to 15-25 µm and a field of view of up to 7 mm...

Giant juvenile fibroadenomas are relatively rare, accounting for less than 1% fibroadenomas. Large breast tumors create significant asymmetry and provide unique reconstructive challenges after removal. In this case, we describe a 21-year-old female with delayed presentation of a giant fibroadenoma of the right breast. This represents an unusual presentation of benign breast disease requiring reduction of the skin envelope, extensive glandular resection, lower pole reconstruction, and free nipple grafting to achieve symmetry with the opposite breast...
