CASE REPORT: A 69-year-old female patient presented with a therapy-resistant corneal ulcer due to contact lenses, which had been present in the left eye for 1 month. The best corrected visual acuity at the first visit was 0.2. Keratitis with a central corneal ulcer was found. A corneal curettage was performed followed by inpatient therapy with antibiotic eye drops. The first PCR result was negative and the microbiological culture was sterile after 48 h. The clinical findings improved during the hospital stay...

Campylobacter jejuni is among the most frequently reported bacterial pathogens causing diarrhea in humans worldwide. We recently reported a murine infection model mimicking key features of human campylobacteriosis. Six days following oral C. jejuni infection immediately after weaning, infant mice developed acute enterocolitis resolving within 2 weeks. Thereafter, C. jejuni could still be isolated from the intestines of asymptomatic mice at low levels accompanied by distinct immune responses, both at intestinal and extra-intestinal locations...

Understanding cellular mechanisms of ototoxic and nephrotoxic drug uptake, intracellular distribution, and molecular trafficking across cellular barrier systems aids the study of potential uptake blockers that preserve sensory and renal function during critical life-saving therapy. Herein we report the design, synthesis characterization and evaluation of a fluorescent conjugate of the aminoglycoside antibiotic gentamicin. Live cell imaging results show the potential utility of this new material. Related gentamicin conjugates studied to date quench in live kindney cells, and have been largely restricted to use in fixed (delipidated) cells...

We previously showed that the 12/15-lipoxygenase (12/15-LO) pathway of arachidonate acid metabolism is involved in multiple events related to diabetic nephropathy (DN), including glomerular hypertrophy and extracellular matrix deposition (Kang SW, Adler SG, Nast CC, LaPage J, Gu JL, Nadler JL, Natarajan R. OBJECTIVE: To study the changes of ADF and G-actin in renal tubular epithelial cell of neonatal rats during kindney ischemic injury. To explore the interactions between ADF and G-actin and their relationships with actin cytoskeleton. METHODS: Twenty-four neonatal rats were used to the experiments due to have the weights from 30 to 40 g respectively. Renal ischemia was induced by clamping the left renal pedicle for different periods of time that was in 10 min or 30 min...

The aim is to observe the expression of human factor VIII gene in mice tranduced in vivo and ex vivo. The vector pLNC-FVIII BD was generated by cloning a B-domain-deleted (760aa-1639aa) FVIII cDNA (FVIIIBD cDNA) into retroviral vector pLNCX. 2 x 10(6) of mouse bone marrow stroma cells transduced by LNC-FVIII BD were infused into 4-week-old BALB/c mice by tail-vein injection. pLNC-FVIII BD was conjugated with PAMAM dendrimer to form complex PAMAM-pLNC-FVIII BD, with which C57BL/6J were injected by tail vein (200 micro l contained 15 micro g/mouse) and sacrificed at days 1, 2, 7, 14, 21 and 28, respectively after injection...

OBJECTIVE: To study the anti-aging mechanism of Zuoguiyin (a prescription for tonifying Kindney Yin) and Yishenbao (a prescription for tonifying Kidney Yang) in presenile mice. METHODS: Using male, 14 months old presenile mice as a model of Kidney-Asthenia, the effects of Zuoguiyin and Yishenhao on RNA transcription activity in isolated nuclei and protein synthesis activity in free-cell extracts of the liver, brain, kidney and testes of the presenile mice were observed...

BACKGROUND: Organ transplant recipients are at an increased risk of nonmelanoma skin cancer. Few data concern heart transplantation and populations from southern Europe. METHODS: A total of 1,329 patients who received their first kidney (1,062 subjects) or heart allograft (267 subjects) were included in a partly retrospective cohort study to evaluate the risk of skin cancer. The incidence rate per 1,000 person-years and the cumulative incidence were computed. Standardized morbidity ratio was estimated by comparison with Italian cancer registry data...

This experiment was designed to investigate the biodistribution characters of 125 I-vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) with high specific activity in normal mice and the effect of VIP on the distributive test. After intravenous injection of 125 I-VIP, the mice were killed during 180 min. Blood, lungs, liver, intestine and kidneys were collected respectively and measured in 7 counter, finally the measurements of their radioactivity (cpm) were converted into ID%/g tissue and the results were expressed as mean+/-s...

Infusion of GABA into the lateral ventricle of intact female rats on the morning of proestrus and in ovariectomized rats significantly stimulated PRL release. This response apparently is not mediated through a direct action on the pituitary since injection of GABA into hypophysectomized rats with a pituitary transplant under the kindney capsule did not alter serum prolactin levels. These observations suggest that GABA may have a role in regulating prolactin secretion.

The transition of zinc and iron metabolism in vitamin B6 deficiency was investigated using germ-free and conventional rats. In contrast to previous reports, a decrease in zinc content was not observed in the liver, pancreas, kindney, spleen, lung or testes of vitamin B6-deficient conventional and germ-free rats, but we found an increase in zinc content in the kidney of conventional rats and in the liver and spleen of germ-free rats. Vitamin B6-deficient conventional and germ-free rats retained more iron in their tissues than the control animals did, except for the spleen of germ-free rats...

A technique for isolation of large amounts of homogeneous Na+, K+-ATPase lipid-protein complex from pig kindney has been developed. The purity of the preparation as determined by the protein component is 96-98%, the large to small subparticle ratio being 4 : 1. The protein and lipid parts of the preparation have approximately the same mass. The enzyme activity is 1600-1900 mcmoles of inorganic phosphate released per mg of protein per hour. The protein secondary structure in a heavy water solution has been studied by infrared spectroscopy in the region of the main amide bands...
