INTRODUCTION: Schwannomas of the descending loop of the hypoglossal nerve are very rare. They are slow-growing tumors that may masquerade a carotid body tumor. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 60-year-old female was referred for a latero-cervical mass appearing as a chemodectoma at CT-scan. At operation, a 2cm mass arising from the descending loop of the hypoglossal nerve was resected en bloc with the loop itself and a functional lymphadenectomy was associated. Post-operative course was uneventful and the patient is free from disease recurrence at one year follow-up...

Children and young adults infected with HIV are at elevated risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, scarce data exist on the utility of non-invasive methods to diagnose subclinical CVD, such as pulse wave velocity (PWV), a non-invasive measure of arterial stiffness. The objectives of this study were to assess the relationship of carotid-femoral PWV with subclinical atherosclerosis measured by carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), compare measurements to healthy controls, and evaluate variables associated with PWV in HIV-infected youth...

BACKGROUND: Identification of preclinical cardiovascular disease represents a challenge. We evaluate N-terminal proB-type natriuretic peptides (NT-proBNP) as markers of both cardiac and vascular subclinical disease in a community-based study including asymptomatic middle- aged study participants. METHODS AND RESULTS: In total, 807 study participants without previous cardiovascular disease were recruited. They underwent thorough laboratory assessment (including NT-proBNP), ultrasound examination of heart and evaluation of coronary calcium score and carotid intima-media thickness, by computed tomography and ultrasound, respectively...

Interventions of cardiovascular disease should be implemented in early ages. But most studies were performed in middle aged or elderly adults because of the low prevalence in young, especially for women. We investigate the association between metabolic risk factors and subclinical atherosclerosis in young asymptomatic women adults, using carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) as a marker of the atherosclerotic process. We performed a cross-sectional study of 950 Chinese young asymptomatic women adults (37.28 ± 5...

Neurogenic neoplasms resulting from autonomic nerves are considerably rare. In this paper, we report a case of a 41-year-old woman with composite tumor of synchronous ganglioneuroma and schwannoma in the vagal inferior ganglion. Ultrasonography and computed tomography showed a well-defined mass, which extruded from the internal and external carotid arteries. Two tumors were closely attached but with an evident boundary. The small tumor was composed of spindle cells and numerous mature ganglion cells, and the large one consisted entirely of differentiated neoplastic Schwann cells...

BACKGROUND: Aneurysms of the external carotid artery represent approximately 2% of cervical carotid aneurysms with the majority being traumatic pseudoaneurysms. The diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of such lesions are completely individualized as there is a paucity of literature available for guidance. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of an 83-year-old woman with an 8-week history of headache in the occipital region, transient episode of gait disturbance, and pulsatile tinnitus on the right...

OBJECTIVES: Insulin resistance (IR) plays a role in the increased cardiovascular risk of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. This study aimed to determine the potential association of IR with disease activity, drug exposure and subclinical atherosclerosis in patients with SLE. METHODS: This cross-sectional study encompassed 87 non-diabetic SLE patients and 82 sex-matched controls. Insulin and C-peptide serum levels, IR indexes by homeostatic model assessment (HOMA2) (both insulin-based: HOMA2-IR, and with C-peptide: HOMA2-IR-C-peptide) and lipid profiles were assessed in patients and controls...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The importance of the obesity paradox in the intracranial vasculature has not been explored. We assessed whether the body mass index (BMI) correlates with severity of carotid siphon calcifications (CSC) in community-dwelling adults. METHODS: Using a population-based study design, Atahualpa residents aged ≥40 years underwent head computed tomography (CT) for assessment of CSC. We evaluated the association between BMI and severity of CSC (dependent variable) using regression models adjusted for demographics and cardiovascular risk factors...

BACKGROUND: Studies demonstrated that visit-to-visit variability in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC) is an independent predictor of cardiovascular events in subjects with coronary artery disease. Whether visit-to-visit variability in LDLC levels affects subclinical atherosclerosis is unknown. This study sought to evaluate the role of visit-to-visit variability in LDLC levels on subclinical atherosclerosis. METHODS: We evaluated 162 type 2 diabetic patients with measurement of carotid intima-media thickness (IMT)...

Arterial stiffness can predict cardiovascular events, and the aim of this study was to produce age- and sex-specific reference values for echo-tracking carotid stiffness in healthy subjects. A total of 900 subjects (500 males, mean age 45.8±19 years) were enrolled. Common carotid artery stiffness and compliance, using a high-definition echo-tracking ultrasound system, were evaluated. To compare stiffness parameters across the different age groups, individual scores were transformed into T-scores, indicating how many standard deviation (s...
