Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia. The development of assay technologies able to diagnose early-stage AD is important. Blood tests to detect biomarkers, such as amyloid and total Tau protein, are among the most promising diagnostic methods due to their low cost, low risk, and ease of operation. However, such biomarkers in blood occur at extremely low levels and are difficult to detect precisely. In the early 2000s, a highly sensitive assay technology, immunomagnetic reduction (IMR), was developed...

OBJECTIVE: Diagnosing bone infection in the diabetic foot is challenging and often requires several diagnostic procedures, including advanced imaging. We compared the diagnostic performances of MRI, radiolabeled white blood cell (WBC) scintigraphy (either with (99m)Tc-hexamethylpropyleneamineoxime [HMPAO] or (111)In-oxine), and [(18)F]fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography ((18)F-FDG-PET)/computed tomography. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We searched Medline and Embase as of August 2016 for studies of diagnostic tests on patients known or suspected to have diabetes and a foot infection...

BACKGROUND: Clostridium difficile is a major cause of health care-associated infection, but disagreement between diagnostic tests is an ongoing barrier to clinical decision making. Conventional enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for toxin detection is currently the most frequently used technique for CDI diagnosis, but its low sensitivity makes the development of an alternative strategy necessary for improving the diagnosis in developing countries. METHODS: Between years 2011 and 2015, 154 stool samples from patients with antibiotic-associated diarrhea were examined by toxigenic culture (TC) and EIA for the diagnosis of CDI...

During development, thalamocortical (TC) axons form branches in an activity-dependent fashion. Here we investigated how neuronal activity is converted to molecular signals, focusing on an epigenetic mechanism involving histone deacetylases (HDACs). Immunohistochemistry demonstrated that HDAC9 was translocated from the nucleus to the cytoplasm of thalamic cells during the first postnatal week in rats. In organotypic co-cultures of the thalamus and cortex, fluorescent protein-tagged HDAC9 also exhibited nuclueocytoplasmic translocation in thalamic cells during culturing, which was reversed by tetrodotoxin treatment...

Cerebrovascular reserve capacity (CVRC) is an important parameter for treatment decisions in chronic cerebrovascular diseases. It can be assessed by measuring the acetazolamide-induced change of regional cerebral blood flow using single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) with Tc-99m-labeled hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime (HMPAO) or positron emission tomography (PET) with O-15-water. Methods: Our database was searched for patients with moyamoya vasculopathy (MMV) or atherosclerotic cerebrovascular disease who had underwent O-15-water PET after normal Tc-99m-HMPAO SPECT with respect to CVRC...

BACKGROUND: Interest in technetium-99m ((99m)Tc)-sestamibi imaging for neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) response monitoring in locally advanced breast cancer (LABC) is increasing but remains matter of discussion. The present study conducted a meta-analysis of the diagnostic performance of (99m)Tc-sestamibi to predict pathologic nonresponse to NAC for primary LABC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic data search was performed. Studies with a minimum of 10 LABC patients that had evaluated (99m)Tc-sestamibi imaging for NAC nonresponse using conventional planar scintimammography, breast-specific γ-imaging, and/or single photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) were included...

This study aimed to assess analytical parameters of a prototype LAMP kit that was designed for detection of Trypanosoma cruzi DNA in human blood. The prototype is based on the amplification of the highly repetitive satellite sequence of T.cruzi in microtubes containing dried reagents on the inside of the caps. The reaction is carried out at 65°C during 40 minutes. Calcein allows direct detection of amplified products with the naked eye. Inclusivity and selectivity were tested in purified DNA from Trypanosoma cruzi stocks belonging to the six discrete typing units (DTUs), in DNA from other protozoan parasites and in human DNA...

A subtraction method for assessments of dual-isotope indium-111 (In)-labelled white cell and Tc-nanocoll was proposed, and following a pilot study was introduced in routine service to improve the confidence of reporters. This technical note describes a simple technique to produce subtraction images from routinely acquired images to investigate and exclude post joint replacement infection. Labelled leucocytes (with In) show areas of increased white cell accumulation, whereas Tc-nanocoll images show bone marrow distribution...

Magnetic chicken bone-based biochar (MCBB) was successfully prepared and efficiently adsorbed rhodamine-B (RB) dye and tetracycline (TC) in multi-component systems. The magnetisation value, surface area, and pHpzc of the MCBB were found to be 66.5 emu/g, 328 m(2)/g, and 8.3, respectively. RB has higher saturation capacity (96.5 mg/g) and occupies more active sites on MCBB, thus limiting the sorption of TC with lower saturation capacity (63.3 mg/g). Langmuir isotherm suitably describes the sorption process in a single-component system; however, the multi-component system was well fitted to the Sheindorf-Rebhun-Sheintuch model...
