Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a severe gastrointestinal inflammatory disease in neonates, particularly in preterm infants. The interleukin (IL) 23/IL17 axis has been shown to play an important role in the gastrointestinal inflammation. However, the association of gene polymorphisms in the IL23/IL17 axis and the development of NEC remains unknown. In this study, we aimed to explore a possible genetic role of IL23R and IL17 in the development of NEC. We identified single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in IL23R (rs10889677), IL17A (rs2275913), and IL17F (rs763780) by polymerase chain reaction and Sanger sequencing...

Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), including those with end-stage renal disease, treated with dialysis, or renal transplant recipients have an increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality. Dyslipidemia, often present in this patient population, is an important risk factor for CVD development. Specific quantitative and qualitative changes are seen at different stages of renal impairment and are associated with the degree of glomerular filtration rate declining. Patients with non-dialysis-dependent CKD have low high-density lipoproteins (HDL), normal or low total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, increased triglycerides as well as increased apolipoprotein B (apoB), lipoprotein(a) (Lp (a)), intermediate- and very-low-density lipoprotein (IDL, VLDL; "remnant particles"), and small dense LDL particles...

The eukaryotic 43S preinitiation complex (PIC) bearing Met-tRNAi(Met) in a ternary complex (TC) with eukaryotic initiation factor (eIF)2-GTP scans the mRNA leader for an AUG codon in favorable "Kozak" context. AUG recognition provokes rearrangement from an open PIC conformation with TC bound in a state not fully engaged with the P site ("POUT") to a closed, arrested conformation with TC tightly bound in the "PIN" state. Yeast ribosomal protein Rps3/uS3 resides in the mRNA entry channel of the 40S subunit and contacts mRNA via conserved residues whose functional importance was unknown...

L-thyroxine (LT4) treatment of hypothyroidism, particularly in patients with thyroid- stimulating hormone (TSH) >10mU/L, results in improved lipid profile, as LT4 stimulates low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) degradation and the conversion of cholesterol in bile acids by inducing LDL-receptor and 7 alpha hydroxylase expression, respectively. Statins decrease total cholesterol (TC) and LDL-C mainly by suppressing 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A activity. Therefore, the addition of statins to LT4 treatment, following the reversal of hypothyroidism, acts synergistically and forms a powerful treatment modality in patients with this condition whose serum lipids have not achieved the target...

The high incidence and mortality of breast cancer supports efforts to develop innovative imaging probes to effectively diagnose, evaluate the extent of the tumor, and predict the efficacy of tumor treatments while concurrently and selectively delivering anticancer agents to the cancer tissue. In the present study we described the preparation of technetium-99m ((99m)Tc)-labeled paclitaxel (PTX) and evaluated its feasibility as a radiotracer for breast tumors (4T1) in BALB/c mice. Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) was used to determine the radiochemical purity and in vitro stability of (99m)Tc-PTX...

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are potentially pathogenic agents commonly found in a natural ecosystem. For this reason, food is considered another source of NTM transmission for humans. The aims of this study were to evaluate the microbiological quality and the occurrence of NTM in fresh-squeezed orange juice samples purchased from street vendors. All 102 samples analyzed were positive for aerobic mesophilic bacteria (AMB), with limits ranging from 1.8 to 6.2 log CFU/ml. A total of 55 (54%), 25 (25%), and 13 (13%) orange juice samples were positive for total coliforms (TC), fecal coliforms (FC), and Escherichia coli , respectively...

Insight into the solid-state chemistry of pure technetium-99 ((99)Tc) oxides is required in the development of a robust immobilization and disposal system for nuclear waste stemming from the radiopharmaceutical industry, from the production of nuclear weapons, and from spent nuclear fuel. However, because of its radiotoxicity and the subsequent requirement of special facilities and handling procedures for research, only a few studies have been completed, many of which are over 20 years old. In this study, we report the synthesis of pure alkali pertechnetates (sodium, potassium, rubidium, and cesium) and analysis of these compounds by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XANES and EXAFS), solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (static and magic angle spinning), and neutron diffraction...

The molecular and electronic structures of the group 7 heptoxides were investigated by computational methods as both isolated molecules and in the solid-state. The metal-oxygen-metal bending angle of the single molecule increased with increasing atomic number, with Re2O7 preferring a linear structure. Natural bond orbital and localized orbital bonding analyses indicate that there is a three-center covalent bond between the metal atoms and the bridging oxygen, and the increasing ionic character of the bonds favors larger bond angles...

CONTEXT: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the largest cause of mortality in Indians. Insulin resistance and related dyslipidemia of increased triglyceride (TG), small dense low-density lipoprotein (sd-LDL) particles, and decreased high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) are associated with increased risk of CVD. TG/HDL-C ratio could be a potential surrogate marker for this South Asian phenotype. Data are scarce on the relevance of TG/HDL-C ratio as a useful lipid marker among Indians...
